If the camera module is mounted at the back of the phone(not the back of the upper slider), then that protuberance is pointless.
They still need space to place the speaker for where you put your ears to listen to as well as a space for the front video call camera.
Edit: With regards to the next poster mentioning about the buttons, look at how far apart the buttons are, and look at the size of the protruding back. The width between the buttons is further than that of the protruding back.

as i said, the dimensions of shinobu were estimates. the screen is ~2,4 inches.

so is it a smartphone without a tuchscreen or not?

considering the fast port length is 1.8 cm (size taken on my W850), we can see that the long side of shinobu is around 9.3cm. So, by scale conversion we can determinate that screen's height is 5cm.
I made the scale conversion using this picture, which is quite in the good perspective to make good measures (my english is poor: not sure about this word...):

Remember that the fast port is a bit disorted on this pic. If you really want to do it, then you should use one of the back. That little
ball is 0.5 x 0.5 centimeters. anyways, the screen isn't the size it looks, it's a bit smaller (about 4.7 centimeters in height).

I think this phone is quite small and slim for the following reasons:
a) The words 'Sony Ericsson' above the screen would be pretty large if the screen was as big as 2.4" . I have found on most phones that the words 'Sony Ericsson' are the same size no matter which phone you have, e.g. they are the same size on a T610 as they are on a P990i.
b) The d-pad looks quite big.
Its the screen proportions that confuses me though.

The text is not the same in all phones. That's more of a coincidence - e.g. w880 and p990 don't have the same.
d-pad is about the same size as w880's. and screen proportions is 4:3
Posted by goldenface
@thecoolsha
It just looks unfeasible wide and thin
Posted by tomasz.luch
I found that text "Sony Ericsson" over the screen is located similar to one on M600i. The proportions are similar.
So if the text is the same size than the screen size of shinobu is 2.6''

Yeah, i know. And pictures can really confuse you - especially with
phones - they often look like s**t on pics. That's probably also why they also have started using models when shooting the press material. to get a feeling of the product in real life.

This is the best comparison of screen sizes of shinobu and m600i.
I think it's the same size but of course if the Sony Ericsson labels are also the same size.

Dude, seriously, that's just stupid... Here's a comparison of P990 and W880.. As I said, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the screen size.

@thecoolsha
You're not right. I said if the "Sony Ericsson" labels are the same size.
And maybe they're not.
So I didn't say that for 100%.
Fine?
And your comparison shows that one of the photos is resized.

Dude, nothing edited. Just cropped the pic in photoshop and resized it to a smaller format.
That's how it is in real life. Just took the pic a few minutes ago.

@tomasz.luch
You just can't compare it that way.
Maybe ask the seller from auction to measure the phone by ruler?
Posted by tomasz.luch
Ok, we should stop this. That's really stupid - arguing about stupid photos and phone with unknown size and a lot of specs.
Posted by semo
here is my estimate:
Phone size: 87 mm x 45 mm
Screen size: 45 mm x 34 mm, diagonal: 56.4 cm (=2.2 inch)
EDIT: This was a wrong estimate everything should be scaled up by a factor 95/87 = 1.09

Yeah, we should, but I just want to make it clear for every single one of you.
Posted by Mizzle
@semo - your measurements are pretty close. But not exact.
Posted by cristiano
@semo
if you added 3mm ,2mm on the Screen size: 45 mm x 34 mm
it would be 48 x 36 = 2.4 inch
Posted by semo
You're wright,
I made a wrong measurement of the length before and everything scaled with it.
Now I measure the back side to avoid the curvature of the front.
Here is my correction:
Phone size: 95 mm x 49.5 mm
Screen size: 49.5 mm x 37 mm, diagonal: 61.8 mm ( = 2.4 inches)
Posted by shaliron
I don't think that the Sony Ericsson labels are the same size. It's a 2.4" screen, and it looks as though there's a 4mm margin from the sides, to I'm imagining the dimensions of the phone to be around 85x46x12.5mm
The phone itself looks pretty ugly in that colour. A quick photoshop:
The complete set of pictures:
I'd say SE is definitely moving towards using pick up hang up keys. The other phones like W880, S500 etc. are probably the last batch of the old style.
Only complaint at the moment is the design of the actual keys. They look really cheap. SE should do something like Nokia or Motorola, with a more abstract design instead of the el-cheapo look that they have at the moment.
UPDATE:
- High quality LCD screens to be used in SE phones sooner rather than later.
- W42S photos added.
- The 5 megapixel camera module has been finalized.
- A new camera module is in development with better colours.
- There will be a new bluetooth headset with
- There will be an announcement on the 28th of May. Shinobu and Sofia could be announced.
- May be minor announcement to counter a Nokia announcement.
- Shinobu will have
v3.0 and will have a 16million colour screen. It will also have plastic that will change shade in different light. It will come in red and black. Its dimensions are app. 90x46x12.5mm.
- Shinobu photos added.
- Light effects to complement the phone will continue to become a feature integrated into future phones.
- UIQ phone without touchscreen to be released this year.
EDIT: Also there's this new bluetooth headset update. Name is probably HBH-DS200. 14mm thick and 65-70mm long.

much nicer in black!

-and non touchscreen UIQ is what i heard too...

I'm wondering if we can ever expect 16:9 screens... (in Europe)
Posted by taikira
@Semo
So, finally, your deductions about dimensions are really close to mine
Seems that this phone is a little bit more longer than 9 cm, with 2.4" screen
Posted by kokosalaki
the 'all-black' version looks a bit dull to me
a touch of colour a la S500 would be nice
maybe orange? it would look like W900 then

Why haven't they continued with the 'speaker-under-the-dpad' solution like whats seen on the S500i/W580i?
That was a good solution to a long-term problem.
Posted by shaliron
@goldenface
I just can't imagine the sound quality or volume to be as loud as a normal speaker when using that design though.

The black version isn't completely black. Will also have orange colors

thecoolsha seems that you know alot of things for upcoming phones...
A couple questions if you can of course answer..
1. Can we expect any Series 60 phone from SE this year?
2. Will Sofia be announced this month or not?
Thank you

q2. very likely. but they have changed their minds a lot this year

1. I'm 99% sure that we won't.
will stick to UIQ, at least for now.
2. If not at the 28th, then next month. But it's ready by now, so I don't see any reason not to announce it this month.

Thank you. I asked for S60 because there seem to be much more applications-games than for UIQ. Anyway..
Since Sofia is almost ready can you tell us what to expect in terms of video capabilities? I mean video recording mainly (VGA or QVGA? fps?)
Posted by Mizzle
Okay, then here's the story with video recording...
Sofia and T650 have both been tested successfully with recording VGA @ 30fps. However, this will probably NOT be in the production models, as this would be more appropriate to have in a dedicated video recorder phone. So I can't really tell if it'll be QVGA or VGA. And neither what framerate.
Hope this settles it.

I see. So nothing is sure untill now. I am wondering why they don't give VGA@30fps since competion (NOKIA) has introduced it in their high-end phones. I think that the strategy of SE to distinguish characteristics (VGA@30fps, Walkman etc) depending of the phones series (either Walkman or Cybeshot) is not good at all. They should give as at least one all around phone. Otherwise I believe that they are going to lose some fans.....
Again thank you thecoolsha for the info. Let's hope that Sofia will have VGA@30fps
Posted by kokosalaki
yes. I am starting to believe that merging supposed Bravia and HandyCam
series into the CyberShot range would be better than keeping all three.
But then again those all-rounders would be far more expensive I guess

Price will surely be higher but on the other hand there are alot of people that want to have an all-round device. SE should release a phone for this category of users.
Posted by bavlondon2
The story so far is that Sofia was supposed to have VGA 30fps but SE are now rushing to get it out and will concentrate on a video orientated device like the n93.
Dont expect more than 15fps QVGA on Sofia. Just as the K800 was left a bit short in that dept so will Sofia.
Posted by >500
video orientated phone? @bav?
you do know the handycam phone idea is DEAD ages ago.
care to explain a little on this video phone?
