Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.
The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical".

The BBC confirmed the presenter had been injured during a Top Gear shoot.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, a former RAF base, in North Yorkshire.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

The presenter was born in Birmingham, educated in Yorkshire and lives near Cheltenham.

In addition to presenting Top Gear for the BBC, he also fronted Brainiac on Sky One until recently.

Wow, I hope he'll be OK! Quite a surprise hearing that. Nature of that business though, can be risky at times.

that guy is awesome

I freaking HATE Clarkson

Posted by axxxr
yeh Clarkson annoys the hell out of me!

Hammond is funny and his style of presenting is excellent!

Apparantly he was driving a Jet Powered Vampire Car at 280mph when this happened!

Hope he pulls out of it!

I like jeremy, he presents very well.

I was thinking not too long ago about what would happen if one were to go off the run way at a high speed. Is he even able to drive a car at that speeds cus that is past Formula 1 speeds and they need super licences to drive. Hmmm I wonder what the other too are like because in the series everytime theres an accident they just dismiss it and have a laugh.

That airfield is like a ten minute drive from mine. I have been there on many occasions!

I think he's a great guy and hope he recovers.

Posted by scottt
Likewise, the airfield is only like a 20 minute drive from me, really do hope he gets better soon, he is a top guy. Wonder if they will leave it in the series.

Posted by tmagberry
Yeah he is top guy and would be a great loss.....

Posted by Coxy
I would think not, but then again knowing him, and Jeremy they may make a little joke out of it and put it on. Unless he is seriously ill and then it wouldn't be such a good idea maybe.

Oh dear, I've been watching him this evening. That's terrible news! Hamster's great on the show. Hope he makes a full recovery!

Hope he fully recovers soon, apparently Clarkson’s at his bedside now with his wife.

Yeah I hope he gets better soon. And I do hope he recovers enough to be able to continue doing Top Gear, it would be a great loss to lose any of that bizzare trio.

TV presenter suffers brain injury

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has suffered a \"significant brain injury\" after crashing a jet-powered car at speeds of up to 300mph during filming.

Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said they were \"reasonably optimistic\" the 36-year-old would make a good recovery.

BBC blames tyre for Hammond crash

A damaged tyre caused the crash that almost killed Top Gear host Richard Hammond last year, the BBC has said.

Also Richard Hammond was in yet another crash over the weekend!

Posted by joebmc
"The 37-year-old skidded off the track during a 24-hour Le Mans-style race at Silverstone on Saturday, the BBC said.

The host was not injured and continued the race once his vehicle - a BMW 330 DTi Sport - was repaired.

Hammond has downplayed the incident, dismissing his second crash in 12 months as "a bit of a collision".

"Reports of my shunt this weekend have been greatly exaggerated," he continued. "

Not as bad as the last one thankfully.

the other day he also filmed a scene for the new Top Gear series coming next month where he raced a Bugatti Veyron against a Typhoon fighter aircraft

Is it me or is top gear one of the best shows ever ?

They have it all, humour and fast cars. I was in stitches when I saw the episode when they drove across the US!

Posted by masseur
sure is

one of the best was when they tried from episode to episode to kill a toyota ute !

Posted by Nanu
It's called a pick-up not a ute!

bloody aussies!
