Sony Ericsson to unveil PlayStation phones?

Well, not quite yet. According to Sony Ericsson's senior vice president of Product and Application Planning, Rikko Sakaguchi, the company "is working on something" (related to the PlayStation phone), although he claims that "the surprise must be kept for the future".
Speaking at a media conference in Malmo, Sweden, as part of the company¡¯s upcoming 5th anniversary celebrations in October, Sakaguchi added that the objective was not to create a gaming device but one that integrates both the gaming and communication functions.
When CNET Asia asked if Sony Ericsson would use the WEGA branding for its TV-enabled handsets (after the Walkman and Cyber-shot), Sakaguchi confirmed that there are plans afoot to do something along those lines, but declined to comment further. He did, however, add that it generally takes around two years to develop a new lineup of phones such as the Walkman series. So going by that measure, it shouldn't be too long before we see the first PlayStation or WEGA handsets in the market if the current plans pan out.

Surely a PlayStation phone would clash with the PSP. Why not just develop an updated version of the EGB-10?

I may be wrong but, l ike Mr Sakagucci says, it takes a couple of years to develop a range of phones.
Also, far it being
using Sony sub-brand names, now it looks more like Sony using to keep these sub-brand names in the public domain. A Wega handset sounds a bit far-fetched to me at the moment.

More likely a Phone with "enhanced gaming support" or something like that.
My guess is that it is a new Symbian OS based phone, that has some older PSP titles pre-loaded and you can buy additional PSP titles online (native apps or Java based).
After all the Vijay Singh Pro Golf 3D game that is pre-loaded on the P990 is a pretty decent golf game with good graphics.
So a Symbian OS phone specifically designed for gaming would not be too hard to imagine (e.g. the keypad done is such a way that specific keys have the same/similar layout to the PSP, 3D graphics chip, stereo speaker design etc.).

this is begining to be stupid,they are using all the renowned brands from Sony. It's just a stupid marketing ideea.Why not make something like P990 but better? Soon we will have Walkman,Wega,Playstation,Cybershot,Handycam with this style we will end up with Sonyericsson Vaio insead of P series. This is just stupid, you will have to buy 6 phones from SE or 1 phone from Nokia in the future.

Microsoft will be launching Xbox Live Anywhere with support for Windows Mobile smart phones. A playstation branded handset will be competition to that. Sony will want to launch a product that will integrate with your PSP/ PS3 and it's playstation network to challenge Microsoft. I think it could be pretty exciting seeing as the graphics development on phones is getting pretty good.

IF SE release a playstation branded phone to connect with the PS3, and PSP (2?), it would challenge Microsofts live system heavily ! It doesnt seem far-fetched to expect a phone as a portable games console, the W900, has a 3d- accelerator (which seems to me like SE were experimenting with it on the W900 for something else...), and landscape gaming is supported on newer SE phones. Maybe the PS phone will be a non-touchscreen smartphone. Symbian games actually have pretty decent graphics
