Why would you want to run a rar file? you could of course unrar it and then zip it as you can get and run a zip program just never seen one for rar files though.
Marc
It a demo file and I assumed it was a Java app of some kind. So if .rar is an archive format, I'll look for an app to deal with it. cheers

sorted - used UnRarX_2.2 for OS X and the file is now installed
Now, anyone know how to download new Nokia Maps on OS X as well as do FW updates ?
Posted by Dogmann
@joemax
If you read my N95 8gb review i am sure The Marques mentions that to do Firmware updates you need to run Boot Camp and not parallels no idea about Maps as i never use them. But is yours Sim free or branded? as they haven't released firmware for the Branded versions yet. Also you will need to run Nemesis to change your product code so you can update your firmware and get rid of the branding if of course it is branded.

@ Joe
if you intend on downloading more .rar files to your N95 get an app called X-Plore, thats the app i use to unrar apps on my N80. I think its a Lonely Cat Games app (LCG) X-Plore. Great app

thanks for the replies all.
My N95 is unbranded (just has an Orange SIM in it). Will go round a mates house, download Nokia Updater on his PC and run todays update from there. Will also have a play with the Maps downloader too.
Although it does say on Nokia's web site that product code 0547686 does not have an update and the latest is actually one version behind what I have (12.0.013).
Is the 20.0.0.015 available for the UK via the PC updater software ?
cheers

afaik dogmann updeated already his fone with the latest fw and he is from the uk
Posted by joemax
Seems that looking at the Nokia forum that it depends on the product code. Shall be pissed off if CPW have not sold me the latest rev - even though it has the latest FW version.
Still a damn good phone though !
Posted by BobaFett
cant u change the code?

@joemax
The firmware versions you are quoting are for the original N95 not the N95 8GB the latest for the N95 8GB is V11.0.026. I believe the original is also still only on V12 awaiting V.20 which model do you have ?

The N95-1 has just had a FW update announced today. This update is the one I am on about, not one for the 8GB
Posted by Dogmann
@joemax
Well you should be able to upgrade just connect to NSU and see what happens as the firmware checking site is not always updated immediately. But i agree if you have bought a Sim free unit from CPW you should have no trouble updating.

@ Boba and Marc
Thanx guys. Im realy enjoing it, everything is so new, fresh and fast in the UI compared to N80 UI. The build is top quality, the buttons we're a little hard at 1st but as i use it more the more im getting comfortable with it. The slider is tight and so smooth no creeks or anything.
The Ngage games are wonderful, great quality,im enjoing Asphalt!
Sound Quality is AMAZING!! And so is the Music Player,im realy going to enjoy this.

@ Dogmann, how come your thread got closed
@ Gucci, so you liking that more then the N80?

Hey gucci.011,
I just got an N81 as well and I love it. I have an unlocked iPhone that is sitting on my desk. The N81 is not quite perfect but pretty darned close as far as I am concerned. Could maybe use a bit more memory but all my apps run and don't crash. Nice piece of kit.
Posted by Miss UK
theres 2 versions of the N81 isn't there?
btw atleast they added a flash on it I don't know what there were thinking when they did the E65
btw look forward to hear your reviews

@ Miss.Uk
Yes i prefer it to the N80,mainly because its a lot faster and newer,also has around 45.1mb ram on boot so i can multitask a lot more than i did with the N80.
@ Sapporo
Thats great mate!!
@ Boba and Miss.Uk
Yep right now theres two but a third is coming im sure, i say this because theres the N81-1 (N81-8GB) and the N81-3 (Normal N81), so i wonder if theres a N81-2 maybe for the USA???
Posted by sapporobaby
@gucci,
I got the normal one. I do have the "iPod with Phone" (the true name for it) should I want to listen to music or videos, etc.... All in all it is a nice device. I like it much better than the N95 or the E90 that I had.
Posted by Dogmann
@Miss UK
It was locked due to part 2 now being available as didn't want the second part of the review to get lost among all the post's and the thread was getting very long IMO.
@Sapporobaby
Congratulations on your new device looking forward to hearing how you get on with it.

Thats great, i actualy do prefer having the normal one, 8GB MicroSDs are out and 16GB im sure are on the way.

Kewl Nokia should bring out a Black Mem Card N95 too I think,
I do prefer to just plug and play rather then having the hassle of wires
is the N81 much different to the N80 I mean the menu's etc?
its prob more like my E65 right?
look forward to your reviews you too
@ Dogmann, ahh right I though Masseur had one of his moments again

Hey Ms. UK.
I traded my E65 in for the N81. The E65 is nice and small, and PAINFULLY SLOW. I really am not sure what Nokia was after with this phone. It is a combination of many things and does nothing really well. On the other hand, I am happy with the N81. The only thing I do not like is the gaming key located near the speaker. I broke it about 2 days after getting the phone and because it is so new, my local Nokia rep shop does not have the parts for the repair.
As for the N80, I can not speak for it as I never had one, however I can say that the N81's icon/applications are in different locations than they were with the N95 and E90. I simply moved them back to where they were. Not sure what Nokia was thinking here with this.

What way do you say slow by the E65?
mine runs fine so does my N80 aswell
my last E65 had bugs but I had it replaced so far touchwood my exchange handset is ok, however it does have the occassion to light up every 5mins when the batts almost flat
the phones growing on me now hated it to begin with,
however it's a nice pretty little thing even though it lags alot
The N80 is alot like the N95 just missing a few things minus that it's a decent handset, I have no issues with it what so ever !
N81 sounds a good handset btw hopefully it will last longer then the N80 on the market

Alright so I thought that a thread like this wouldn't hurt especially the fact that there are many N series phones relesed from Nokia: N70, N71, N72, N73, N80, N90, N91, N92, N93.
So N Series Users,feel free to post your problems and questions here.
Cheers
Thanks Boba and I have always wanted to ask that why does it appear as if the Symbian phones are much more upgradable than the N series phones at most. Yes its more like a stupid question but it wouldnt hurt right?
Even the E sriesies have the same problem. A good example is when yo try to implement ohone secure

what do u mean with more upgradeable?

@ Miss.UK
Compared N80 the N81 has the same stand by screen with 6shortcuts, Wlan Wizard etc BUT the Multimedia Menu has changed and looks A LOT more sophisticated and easier to use with the Navi-wheel, il upload some screenshots of the menu and multimedia menu. Its a lot faster than the N80, it fully boots up in 21secs, which i think is impressive for a smartphone also has around 45.1mb ram on boot and 40mb average, im able to run 13apps and still have 18mb ram left which is realy good considering it doesn't have Demand Paging like a N95-8GB or N82. The N80 still has the best screen though in the Nseries, The N81 screen is REALY big bright and colourful and looks great but it is not as good as N80.
Posted by sapporobaby
Hey Gucci,
You got the normal N81 or the N81 (8 gig)? You seem to have quite a bit of ram while I have only 8 gigs free.
Posted by GUCCI.011
@ Sapporo
I got the normal N81. How much ram does yours have after boot up?
Posted by sapporobaby
@Gucci,
After I boot up: I go to Menu, then Options, then to Memory, I select Phone and it shows me that I have 7128 free with 18 megs in use.
Posted by GUCCI.011
@ Sapporo
Thats Internal Memory not ram. To check ram you need Handy Taskman.
Posted by sapporobaby
uhhhhhh...... DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
True. I thought something was not right.
Thanks. I love this phone. My iPhone is sitting sad and lonely.
Posted by sapporobaby
Yo Gucci,
Got it now.
Ram: 39.6 M / 77.4 M
Phone Mem: 6.9 M 24.7 M
Mem Card: 1.4 G / 1.9 G
Other than the memory card, do these numbers sound about right to you?

Hey dude.
Take a quick look at the N81 specs and then compared it to the iPhone. The iPhone is very anemic when it comes to phoning features.
Posted by BobaFett
u cant compare those 2 fones imo. iphone is a "thing" with call feature, n81 is the result of years long experinence, tradition etc.
Posted by GUCCI.011
@ Sapporo
Thats about right mate
Im also realy enjoying it,i thought i'd regret not getting a N95 but im actualy glad i got this instead,realy fast and exciting phone, what firmware version is yours? Theres already a FW update availabe for it.

@boba
Excellent point my friend. The iPhone should be called: "iPod with Phone". It is more iPod than phone.
@Gucci
I have the latest I think: V 11.0.045. Is this what you have?

how is the battery standby?
Posted by sapporobaby
Standby could be better. I have started turning off Music Player so this will not be running in the background. By the way, I posted about not using TruPhone. It likes to run in the background, thus taking up CPU cycles, and in turn battery life. Also TruPhone is sneaky in that it changes the default call setting from cellular to Internet and this uses their application.
Posted by BobaFett
the use fring imo, far better. so 1 day standby at heavy usage?
