Nokia N Series & Symbian Thread

Ive had two nokia series 60 phones and the battery is the worst thing ive ever seen. I had to charge it every night so i didnt go out of power. But the futures on most nokia series 60 phones is incredible compared to the size. Except from power and the lack of ram memory. But uiq phones have that aswell. So as i can see they both are realy god competitors to each other.

I think every one is going to have to get used to this with batteries untill some major new technology comes along. Nobody gets pissed off when their laptop dies after 4 hours or their digicam or their gps batteries run out. A smartphone performs far more functions than phone used to even a couple of years ago and it has a brighter bigger higher res. screen. I really can't see whats the big deal in sticking it in a charger by the side of your bed every night before you sleep or topping it up in your car. The screen sizes, functions and so on just keep increasing but a Li-ion battery is a Li-ion battery- it can't get any smaller.

Posted by Prom1
Two faults with your reasoning.

4 yrs ago a laptop with just 1 9cell battery Li-ION could NOT get more than 3hrs of normal MS Word processing with MP3 playback continuously. Let alone watching a DVD from FULL charge completely, you'd miss the last 45mins. Today we're getting 4-6 hours on 1 just 1 battery. The battery technology is ALREADY there; its called Lithium-Polymer! Its what SE phones have built a staple on. Nokia has been VERY retarded to ignore this EVEN when old laptop batteries based on lithium-ION have sparked/exploded/caught on fire.

With Lithium-Polymer the battery power increases noticeably, furthermore the shape of the battery can be molded within reason & even be folded to compress its size. Sure there is still a DIRECT correlation between battery strength & size; then its UP to the engineers to make the phone more ... hmm ... lets say FRUGAL/SCROOGE when it comes to power consumption. Nokia has NO engineers that realize this. Even with great products like the N80/E70/N95 I will NOT purchase them UNTIL I can see great improvements in power consumption being lessened. And already their using Texas Instruments OMAP cpu's; the best at power consumption/performance for mobile devices in the industry.

S60 & UIQ should be tweaked for efficiency. I DONT need an alarm notificatoin to take up the WHOLE screen keeping the backlight on. Especially if I've set 15 different alarms per day. (not that I do but you can see the power needed to execute this.) If I'm set to a profile like MEETING then ONLY a small strip of the LED should be lit to show a brief synopsis of info with the ability to SIDE-SCROLL or the ability to pull UP the FULL information. This is something that the PALM OS 6 COBALT was gonna be and was gutted for no apparent reason. Design costs, BULL.

The technology for highly reflective backpanels should be in use with the light sensor if sunlight or indoor office light is highly in use. There should be NO power needed to power the LCD, yet the LCD should CLEARLY show information. Would the LightSensor consume power more than a backlight to be able to enable the backlight on the fly when sudden darkness ensues?!

This is just a FEW examples that EVERY smartphone manufacturer should consider.

Hi all,
Well all i can say is my N93 has an 1100aMh Lithium Polymer battery i get a days good usage easily i just wish their was a SwissMangaer for S60 3rd edition and the update finally arrives not for any other reason than 5mb extra Ram can't hurt now can it.

Hi as you know that N91's Music Player can read Id3 tags as well as it can show album art, But i am facing a problem i put album art "artist pictures" using "TAG AND RENAME"(An award winning Tag editing software) but N91 cant show the Album art(pictures) where as my old N70 did......!
How can i solve this................?

is there any celltrack app for 3rd os? i do liked it in n70

Posted by Prom1
CellTrack for S60 3rd Edition is in the works Boba! If not I think its already complete.

> take a peak on a sites site for the best S60 info.

Posted by BobaFett
actually, whats the advantage of 3rd os next to the 2nd?

hey guys. i have a problem on my N91, whenever the phone was off and switched back on and I press and hold the menu key I find that ppt has automatically started in the background. any ideas on this? am I the only one experiencing this? thanks.

Posted by BobaFett
oh, thats ptt how do u mean it starts by itself? did u checked the settings?

Posted by *dust*
it is active in the background when I start the phone. don't know why though.

Posted by BobaFett
i checked ptt in my fone, if its not active, it doesnt run. does your op support ptt?

This message was posted from a E50-1

Posted by Prom1
yeah most likely his provider. Thats why it wont work.

ppt = PowerPoinT

ptt = Push To Talk ... I got confused.

Check settings with the provider just in case?

@Boba major advantages in Symbian OS 9.1 (3rd Edition) is built in support for WiFi, VoIP, no need to layer 3G support in the S60 GUI its now part of the core OS. Many many more especially with FP1 FOTA!

Posted by *dust*
Nevermind guys. I got it right, Bobbafett u were right. It was just a setting in ptt, it was set to autorun or something like that.

and why dont run the 2nd os apps in 3rd os fones? imo an advanced os should be able to run an older version app

One of the major features of the 3rd edition is the security issue. To adress the growing number of viruses and malicious software the symbian developers have changed the way that most apps run on the phone- as well as the need for a signed certificate they have made it very difficult to write to the ROM of the phone where the core functions are. This is why there are no reports of any viruses yet on 3rd ed. 2nd ed. software just isn't safe anymore.

Posted by BobaFett
i downloaded once tons of apps to n70, some of them didnt run or caused a temporary bug ( fone started to turn off by itself ), but when i deleted it, fone worked fine again...

did any of u get a virus waht killed or really "damaged" the fone?

Posted by QVGA
I have a question. If EGDE service is available in my area, will my phone show some sign that its available?

Posted by bugsiiy
@QVGA usually S60 3rd edition phones from nokia don't show if you are on edge or gprs, you should only notice the speed.

Posted by Prom1
This has changed lately.

@QVGA your phone should state E for EDGE or U for UMTS - unsure if it supports it.

Posted by bugsiiy
@Prom1 since when? In my N93 user guided says there is the same symbol for GPRS and EDGE,also I even tested it while I was in EDGE and it is the same. Now I don't think that nokia n93 is that old.

Posted by BobaFett
e is usually shown for edge

This message was posted from a E50-1

n93 suports: wap , gprs , edge , 3g , ota ,

and it shows it

well my n73 does so n93 should

Posted by BobaFett
@qvga do u have edge support in your area?

Posted by QVGA
Well, not exactly where i live. But a couple of miles away. I'll try and see.

Posted by BobaFett
u could then compare edge and umts speed, not just the icons. do u watch tv with your one? how is the quality?

This message was posted from a E50-1

Posted by QVGA
Well, I dont have UMTS as of yet. But my cellular service provider will be bringing 3G in the near future.

Posted by BobaFett
so u use it in gprs area? isnt it a bit wsate? i mean, u miss the main feature support. how fast is gprs?

Posted by Prom1
Hey Boba, S60 is the phones main feature of support, - dont forget that .

UMTS is needed in your side of the pond; but here EDGE class 10 is pretty solid as our modulation is MSC 9 the BEST EDGE can offer.

in regards to S60 phones showing E - EDGE I think its less upon the model (although I have read on any forum of N93 owners seeing it), and MORE on where the device was released & firmware revision. I could be wrong though.

Posted by BobaFett
e is always shown, even in 6230i, its a general "icon", why shouldnt nokia put the same feature in all its edge models?

Posted by QVGA
UMTS wasnt my main priority. GPRS works very well on my phone. I'll be trying EGDE soon.

Posted by BobaFett
do u have many apps installed?

Posted by QVGA
I have MIG33, Agile Messenger, Crypto, Quick Office and Anti Virus installed.
My fone hung up on me for the first time yesterday.

Posted by BobaFett
my e50 went yesterday mad too. it started to open apps by itself, had to turn it off. its fine again.

Posted by bugsiiy
@QVGA what antivirus do you have?

Posted by QVGA
It came with the phone. It was already in the supplied memory card.

Posted by BobaFett
f-secure i guess

Posted by QVGA
Yep, that one.

Posted by BobaFett
is that for any use actually?

Posted by QVGA
Well, I havnt really caught any viruses yet. But its easy to use and updating it is also very easy. It can also run in the background where it constantly checks for viruses(real time scanning).

Posted by BobaFett
actually, got anybody here any kind of virus on its fone?

Posted by QVGA
I hope no one got any on a 3rd edition phone. Security is one of its big features.

Posted by BobaFett
i tried today upgrade my fone online, it says, no new fw for e50 yet

Posted by QVGA
Something intresting i found. Go to the "help" of the media player and there it will tell u how to turn on the visualisation and how to turn on the spectrum/oscilloscope. These are visualisations that actually react to music playback.
Strangely, no nokia has this as of yet.

Posted by BobaFett
what media player? real player, music player, flash player...

Posted by QVGA
music player

Posted by BobaFett
wow, got it. but that visualisation isnt listed, just in the help. imo thats at the visual radio maybe?
