Hello everyone.

Consider me a newb on S60 - although I understand a LOT can be done on them - I'm an S60 2nd Edition FP2 defector.

I have a SPECIFIC question that I HOPE you ALL can assist with; however I currently don't have an S60 phone.

Some background first. My service provider, Rogers Wireless (more in the Bocanito Canadian users thread in the last 5 posts there), has done something heiness to us GSM faithful here in Canada. Their have finally allowed for decent browsing pricing on "Subsidized" ONLY phones. Thats right SUBSIDIZED ONLY phones. This includes the K850i & the Nokia N95-4 (8GB black version). Because of branding and the network setup that they've implemented, many ppl that have purchased this data plan to allow for $7/Mth unlimited data are getting SCREWED when trying to use it on their Retail purchased phones. Many are seeing charges in excess of $400 - 800CAN causing hardache & pain - well mostly anger & utter shock!

Now originally we thought Rogers was using IMEI filtering, but this doesn't make sense (there was a software tech that connects to the GGSN via the switch that Tmobile USA did back in 2004 but it failed MISERABLY; imagine working tech and have 200 calls in the queue of ANGRY HP 6315 PPC users for over 4hrs consistently! Yea that software was pulled in a heartbeat). SO I'm left to deduce - and others on Howardforums.com - that certificates as well as browser profile (the software that tells Esato what device you're using from the built in browser; that profile thingy) is at fault.

Now, here is my question. Is there a way to backup & REINSTALL these signed certificates back onto an N95-4, and also spoof a the browser signature/profile thingy?

Thanks for all you're help everyone.

Anyone?

As far as I know (and I'm pretty up on these things) there is no way to spoof the browser. Doesn't sound beyond the realms of human achievement though so who knows...
Your probably right in your hunch though- my operator here in Sweden has two plans: browser only (c. 15usd) and all data (c.30usd) and they can tell if you are using the inbuilt browser or Opera Mini.

Bingo! Shug thats Exactly what my provider is doing (save for the all data = $65/mth)! Somehow they can also tell if GMail is being used and have (this current month) blocked the ports the java app uses, trying to lock users into another service add-on, for a fee of course.

THis erks me SOOOO much because smartphones and even feature phones were MEANT to be able to use applications; due to the size footprint of S60/UIQ/J2ME apps they don't send or receive that much data (J2ME especially). This is NOT laptop tethering for VPN or corporate desktop applications (laptop or not) or FTP'in for major resources. Its not abuse NOR is it something users SHOULD be restricted too. Its like having a car, yet told you cannot add a new stereo system, shocks, tires, spoilers, seats or A/C.

Thanks though for sharing the information on the Browser, MUCH appreciated. Now I'm off to hunt for a plugin for User Agent spoofing (thats the term I was after in the previous post, hehe).

Hi Prom1

Well i would also say you can rule out it being the browser info as both the phones from them and not would give the same browser info.

It sounds like what ever system they have in place is quite sophisticated and that they are determined to make sure that you can only do what they want you to. Not nice but really i don't think there is anything you can do to beat what seems like a very effective system.

Marc

Hi Prom1,

Can it be that they have done some setting in the "subsidised" phone firmware so that the DHCP always assign a specific range of IP (i.e. those that dont incur billing charges) when phone initiate a network connection?

Has anyone tried flashing a generic N95-8G with Roger's firmware if one exist? If someone has done this and it still dont work, then most probably they are using imei/mac addr as filtering and there is no way to overcome it.

Marc,

You may be right! It's looking MORE and MORE that way.

Mib, althought I can change the APN (which uses different GGSN routing & thus specific IP is used for pure 8080 port & common POP3/IMAP ports, the other for WML browsers for mobile sites disallows Email ports - this does cause more charges on my bill. However, I'm still searching if anyone upgraded the OS on their N95-4 that is Rogers subsided originally and I'll have to wait a month or so until someone that HAS done so, posts any shocks on their monthly bill.

In any case, what Mib suggests is most likely part of an intelligent, robust and GREEDY system that rogers has in place - and so far Marc is correct that it may be futile to try to circumvent it without someone on the inside able to test along with me and give me the inside info without reporting it to the engineers - don't want loop holes fixed IF they exist .

Firmware upgrade for N95 8GB on O2 is now available, upgrade to v20.0.16 includes ASR which actually works better than RotateMe.

Posted by BobaFett
it could be hw or fw... or even the battery. best way is to check another batt as the first step

Nokia's N78 to lack FM transmitter in certain markets

The Nokia N78 made its first appearance in Finland some time ago, and there it has been confirmed to have the FM transmitter feature. However, users from France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, and Italy are reportedly not going to have this feature built-in with their Nokia N78 units. The reason being that having an unregistered transmitter is against the law in certain countries.

Music: The Seed 2.0 by The Roots - hilarious. this S60 touch video (same as the original just a few minor changes) makes me laugh because I don't think Nokia marketing team really listened to the lyrics of this track. GO online on Youtube and give 'er a listen lol. Great band btw - Hip Hops finest.

That is SICK! ~ why cannot do this?! Bah oh well. What is the range of that FM Transmitter? Also I know it won't be coming to Canada/USA with that intact.

I can't find any decent apps for my N82 ......every decent apps that i find says that the certificat has expired any ideas?

Posted by Yakkaimono
You just have to move the date on your N82 back a year or two then install the apps. Later you can move it back to the current date.

Posted by Stud
Ok, I got the locking application already.

Please I need the Timer feature! for Nokia N82

Somebody help!

Exactly, thanks!

I just got it a few days ago.

The only thing about it that it doesn´t vibrate when it reaches 0 like my previous SE phone. Do you know how to make it vibrate at 0?????

Posted by jojosiscar
i'm not sure if that is possible also..

I need a way to get my browser back, I only have web and walk.

Opera doesn't work with Wi-Fi and cant update firmware

Posted by jojosiscar
The S60 built in web browser is a very capable browser imo.

Posted by shug
You need to expand on your post. It's confusing. I would have thought it impossible to 'lose' the inbuilt browser-what happened? Opera works fine with wifi. Why can't you update firmware- even if you have the latest you should be presented with the option of reinstalling same.

Posted by thomas93
I have Web and Walk on it, it's T-Mobile branded but unlocked.

Got Opera working, any ideas how to get tabs on it?

Quite pleased with this though.

Is the Nokia N82 and N95 Software CD compatible with Mac OS Leopard????

Posted by shug
AFAIK the cd contains only pc software but there is a sync app for mac available on the Nokia site. It's only been out for a month or two so it ought to work with Leopard.

Posted by shreyans
does 3230 support 1gb cards??? if not, then do i need to format 1gb card with fat 16 and make it compatible???

Posted by deepsme
Just found this countdown site by Nokia...it shows a countdown of about 97 hours...a countdown for new devices? maybe..

Last night the other half had a call from UK Voda upgrades, telling her the N96 would be availble from the 12th of July.

I tried to confirm this earlier on the sales line, but the guy knew nothing and didnt seem bothered and he was still reporting end of Aug. He wasnt bothered about cross selling either, so not sure who's telling porkies or whether one department might know more than the other.

Could be they are going to announce it/them this month.

Will try again later.

I think the first person must be mixed up, according to the Vodafone eForum staff who are pretty good at checking these things there's currently no sign of the N96 on their systems.

Yeah it’s totally mind blowing, I’m happy with my decision that I made my decision to get N82 over E71. I can’t find anything that I can’t do with it except play directly DVD disks. Lolz.
What is last firmware of N82? Mine is [V 20.0.062, 28-02-08, RM-313, Nokia N82 (25.01)] which came by defult.

Posted by GUCCI.011
The N82-Black comes standard with the latest V20 firmware.
I should hopefully be getting a N82 as well very soon and give my N81 an early retirement.

Posted by adnansanni
Hey guys can anyone tell me that, where Google map application store the data? Is it in phone memory or memory card? I mean downloaded data while browsing not installation.

I recieved a message from Nokia telling me theres a update available

So I just recently got a new N82 and was wondering what are some good applications for it? I currently have RocknScroll, Slick messenger, DivX player, Screenshot, and Emtube. Btw, does anybody have a key for CorePlayer? Or a version that doesn't need a key?
Btw, the N82 rocks my socks. =]
