Persistent Email Problem With M600i - Any Advice ?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and to the M600i, which I've had for a couple of weeks.

I upgraded from my trusty T610 purely to be able to access and respond to email while away from the office. Unfortunately - and despite many attempts to configure the telephone, and long conversations with Vodafone and Sony Ericsson, I have failed to get it going.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that this forum is able to make.

I am a Vodafone "pay monthly" subscriber in the UK. For various reasons, I am on a very old tariff called Vodafone 20.

The M600i is a Vodafone branded model. I am unable to tell you the firmware currently running on the phone, because Vodafone appear to have disabled the menu which would give me that information.

I use Apple G4 laptops at home and at work and I have no easy access to a PC which makes updating the firmware very difficult. However, I have tried to do this once, using a friend's PC, and the updater software reported that the phone was already running the latest version of the firmware.

I have tried to get three different email accounts to work on the telephone.

The first of these is our work email account which runs on a company pop3 server. This did not work. I was told this is because our email server doesn't have a URL, just an IP address, and that the phone couldn't talk to a plain IP address - which sounds plausible.

The second of these is my home email account, which is with Demon. This did not work. I was told that this is because the username on this account takes the form of name+accountname and that the phone struggled with the plus sign.

The third of these is a vodafone.net email account which I set up on the basis that a Vodafone branded handset on a Vodafone network should definitely be able to talk to a Vodafone email service. But it did not work.

On each of these attempts I have had the settings sent to me either by Vodafone support staff or by entering the information on the mail configurator at the Sony Ericsson website. I have also tried to enter them manually in the email accounts in settings / accounts settings / email accounts.

On each attempt, the failure has been exactly the same.

I enter "messaging", select the email account, compose a test email and click "get & send". The red progress bar at the top of the screen tracks across correctly, first "sending", then "receiving".

Then I get two error messages :

Problem sending message : comms line failed

and

Problem connecting : comms line failed

Although far from being an expert, I am reasonably technically competent, but I have now tried everything I can think of, and I'm getting slightly frustrated !

As I said, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

edit: fixed title from M660 to M600

there are lots things that people will suggest you try. My question is about your internet connection, make sure you are not using a WAP service for email, you need to use an Internet (web) connection. You can the Wap and Internet settings here: http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

Thanks, Jah.

And thanks to massuer for editing my subject line !

One of the things that I find so confusing about this phone is that I cannot find a panel where I enter those connection details.

In settings / account settings / email accounts the only information that is required is :

Basic

Account name
Your name
Email address
Connection type (where the options are pop3 or imap)

Inbox

Incoming server address
Username
Password
Download restrictions
Receive using group (currently set to "vodafone uk incoming")

Outbox

Outgoing server address
Use SMTP authentication
Use Inbox details
Send using group (currently set to "vodafone uk outgoing")

Under more / advanced in all three screens there are :

Secure connection (none / SSL / TLS)
Incoming mail port (110)
Secure password authentication

Any advice ?

Thanks again,

Chris

look here: Tools>Control Panel>Connections>Internet Accounts

Please tell us the names of the accounts you have. Also have a look at the Groups tab and see what connections are available for the Internet Group

Hi Jah,

I'm afraid that the menus on my phone don't work like that !

Under Tools I have :

File Manager
Vodafone
Connections manager
Remote Sync
Calculator
Converter
Stopwatch
Time
Timer
Voice Recorder
Speed Contacts
Try And Buy

If I choose Connections Manager I can see :

Ad Hoc Bluetooth PAN
-----------log-----------
Contract Internet
PAYT Internet
Vodafone Live GPRS
Vodafone WAP

The Vodafone Live GPRS log shows 0.0Kb of traffic in both directions.

Under Settings > Account Settings > Internet Accounts there are a plethora of options.

Under the Accounts tab the list reads :

Ad Hoc Bluetooth PAN
Business Email
Contract Internet
Contract MMS
Contract WAP
PAYT Internet
PAYT MMS
PAYT WAP
Vodafone Live GPRS (twice, for some reason)
Vodafone WAP

Under the Groups tab the list reads :

Business email
Demon Incoming
Demon Ingoing (these despite the fact that I have deleted the Demon account in the email account settings pane)
Internet
Vodafone Internet (italicised)
Vodafone Mail Incoming
Vodafone Mail Outgoing
Vodafone UK Incoming
Vodafone UK Outgoing
Vodafone WAP

You can click "edit" on all of these, and when you do the next screen invites you to allocate a connection priority. The only option in that list is "contract internet".

Chris,

you probably have too many settings here. But you can clean this up once we have done the basics.

When you are under (tools>control panel>connection manager>settings etc) Accounts, select Contract Internet and edit it and see what settings it allows you to adjust. If it does then use the Voda web settings from www.filesaveas.co.k link in my previous post.

Hi Jah,

I've had to morph slightly to get around the "3 post" limit to new registered users. Apologies for this breach of forum etiquette.

Thanks for this - I have now checked the settings and they seem to be correct.

That is :

Address : internet
Username : web
Password: web

Those are the only fields I have access to.

Under "more", there is a TCPIP menu (IP config / IP DNS address), a proxy option (disabled) and a log in.

Chris,

okay, looks like the internet connection that the Messaging app would use looks okay. I assume you can use Opera to surf the www? If so then this connection is okay. The only outside possibility is that for same reason your email accounts may be using another connection.
Just to close this option down, delete all the wap/web/intrenet connections execept Contract MMS, Contract WAP and Contract internet.

I will see if I can use the "+" symbol in a 'user name' for one of my email accounts on my M600

Hi Jah,

Yes, I can surf the web using Opera as well as using the built-in browser.

In fact, pretty much everything works except email.

I don't think that the "+" sign is all that relevant - I'm currently trying to get the phone to use a vodafone.net account which doesn't pose that problem, and that doesn't work either.

Thanks again, and feel free to get on with your life if you get bored with this !

Chris,

I can also get my Messaging app to give me the Coms Line failed message - just by having a mismatch between the SIM card and the internet account and this is why I think your email accounts are using an incorrect internet account. The 'final solution' may be to Master Reset (after a back-up) and don't restore email settings - sorry but starting from scratch may be the best option.

Hello,

Have you considered signing up for a hosted Microsoft Exchange Server like mail2web.com or 4SmartPhone.net? I'm not sure if these are available to users outside the US but I wouldn't be surprised if there are hosted Exchange Servers in the area you live.

Using the hosted server and installing the Dataviz RoadSync (ActiveSync) .SIS application on your phone (from the SE website), you could forward your mail to the e-mail account on the hosted server at which time it would be 'pushed' out to your phone.

Hope that helps.

RxistKJ,

I don't think setting up this mail2web account will solve Chris' problems. His is a communication problem and he won't get any push if the connection is not enabled first. Push does not really opens a connection, but simply makes sure one is always open to be able to send info from the server to the device when needed instead of having the device polling the server at specified interval.

Plus, on my perfectly good connection, I'm unable to get ActivSync to connect to my mail2web account. This might be even more confusing for Chris.

Hi
anyone running Vodafone Business Email with the M600i handset may be having trouble with calls being dropped and the phone blocking calls when the VBE is active.

Vodafone didn't want to know, so i fixed it myself!

Vodafone have now iupdated their tech support with my fix!

here ya go:

To fix it, go to the main menu:

select:

SETTINGS

then

ACCOUNT SETTINGS

then

INTERNET ACCOUNTS

then

in this screen select:

MORE/OPTIONS

and set PREFERRED MODE to 'AUTOMATIC'

(it is defaulted to PS or CS only)

hit SAVE

and then it should all work fine.
