Just given up smoking!

I've done it, I've just smoked my last cigarette.

I'm hopfully giving them up for good, just can't afford to carry on smoking now I have a mortgage and house to run! My wife has too, doing it together.

Hopefully over the next few days I won't flame anyone or anything due to my probable short temper!

Apologies for starting this thread on a mobile phone discussion board, but will need all the help I can get! It's like losing a friend, someone whose been with you through thick and thin, and a bit of a coping mechanism when feeling down, I'll have to get loads of faulty phones to keep me occupied and not think about fags!

Posted by axxxr
Congrats mate...wish you the best of luck!..Its gonna be tough no doubt, but this is the initial difficult period you need to overcome.

Like you said just keep yourself occupied with your phone repairs or just something else.

I would advice you to eat sweets aswell whenever you have a really bad craving..believe me it works!

Keep it up - Samboy ! Though I haven't smoked even a single 'stick' in my entire life . . . I just don't like the effects: dark gums and lips, yellowish teeth and bad . . . . . you know what's - bad

Ah well done i hope you succeed i really do, best of luck to you and your wife!

Posted by goldenface
Good luck mate! I know you can do it.

You'll be able to afford a P990i with all the money you would save

Put your old ciggy butts in a jar of water and keep the lid on. Then when you feel like a ciggy, smell the jar and

dont really know u sammy but gd luck.
i hope you manage.
my stepdad smokes and its horrible.
again gd luck and i hope you succeed

Posted by luigithfc
hood for you stay as fit as you can for your houselhold!

just out of intrest what age did u start?
and how long u been smokig for?
how many did u smoke a week?

Posted by Sammy_boy
Damn i could really do with a fag now!

I was a relatively late starter to smoking, only started when I started going to clubs with mates who smoked aged 18, they kept offering me cigarettes, I kept saying no until one evening when drunk I said yes! Gone from there really. I've always liked the smell of cigarette smoke, I remember liking the smell even as a kid when I went to see my grandmother who smoked quite heavily and liking that cig smoke smell.

I've recently been smoking more, as getting a house of our own meant the sudden realisation that we could make our own rules up and smoke when we want, where we want! Recently been smoking about 15 a day, not too bad but bad for me!

Posted by haynesycop
Just think of the money you will save, get a jar or something and put what you would spend on cigarettes between the both of you in it. You will soon have a fair bit of money, just think what you could do with it, go on holiday, home improvements etc.

Or you could join the gym that way you have something else to focus on. My mum gave up for awhile and substituted the smoking for cakes and sweets and put on alot of weight, if you join the gym you have substituted a bad habit for a good one.

Posted by Sammy_boy
Nice idea, but gyms are against my religion! I know i'd join, go probably about twice then always have an excuse for not going again!

Unfortunately not sure if the spare money will go that far, as one reason I've given up is I've re-organised my finances a bit to clear some debts as quick as possible, so a loan repayment has more than doubled, wiping out any savings by not smoking

However, at least I physically won't be able to afford to smoke now hopefully!

Would kill for a fag right now though, might go and have lunch shortly!

Agreed 100%

Best thing you can do right now! Just stick to the alcohol

Good luck, I myself have given up smoking again. Gave up for 7 months then relapsed for 6 and am in my 3 week of giving up again. (Had been smoking for 7 years approx ten a day, fell for stupid peer pressure when I was 16)

I know from experience (well for me anyways) the first 3 weeks are the hardest, so luckily I have past that again.
You will notice an increase in money saved, I sure did and I also noticed breathing became… well easier, don’t get so out of breath as I used to

Word of warning once a smoker always a smoker, having a pint down the pub without a cigarette just isn’t the same anymore, you will notice people smoking more and you if like me will anyways miss the feel of a good old cigarette. But on the plus you save more, are in better health and smell nicer.

All very true Joe! I'm not much of a drinker, but whenever I did go for a drink a fag was part and parcel of it!

Someone walked past me outside this morning smoking a cig, caught a smell of the smoke and could have mugged them for that half-smoked ciggy!

Very true about always being a smoker, I managed 7 months given up before also, and barely a day went past where I wished I could just have another fag!

They do say that you're only one cigaretter away from being addicted again, and I think that's very true. I tried smoking 'socially' last time, but it slowly crept back into other parts of my life and hey presto! I was a smoker again!

congrat, well done sammy unfortunaterly i love to smoke

@ Sammy_Boy
Mate, its all up there in the HEAD...

Take it this way...as a challenge...pretend that you get to scr3w Pamela Anderson if you can avoid the smoke for a week. If that succeed, you can always make the week a month or even a year...

"MIND" is the KEYWORD...

All Hail Bob Marley, the ambassador of Cannabis.

Well, just about managed my first day without fags. Been hard at times, I've been a bit short tempered at times but not as bad as I thought. There are certain times and when I'm doing certain things when I would normally have a smoke which are particularly bad times.

Got one of those 'inhalator' things to deal with the 'habit' side of the addiction, seem to be working to an extent, along with chewing a lot of spearmint chewing gum!

watch that stuff, will give you the shits if your not carefull

i gave up to a few months ago, couldnt keep doin that, i could hardly breathe in then, it was hard but i found a healthy alternative which dont do half the damage to ur lungs, and its green which means it has to envoironmentally friendly.

Posted by Xugaa
Lol good for you, in fact great for you and hopefully you'll live those hard earned extra days now!

Keep it up mate, although I'm sure its hard you'll never regret giving up in the end.

Posted by Sammy_boy
That's the other thing, I'm extending my life expectancy!

Though don't feel so good at the moment. I'm at work, there are people going on about fags and smoking, and I really don't want to be here! Think I should have taken a week off when I started giving up. Got some nights in a few days and not looking forward to them either!

that's great news. I have been a nonsmoker for a year now... i had to do it the hard way, i had no choice.

i suffered from pneumothorax a year ago because of smoking. i spent a month in a hospital, had surgery to suture up my lungs and spent almost $5000 (that's 250,000 philippine pesos) for hospital bills.

Posted by Sammy_boy
Wow, quite an expensive trip into hospital there due to smoking!

I hate it when ppl say that , quite a heavy smoker myself, i feel these ppl are just scaring us.

@ boba, i second you. i love smoking

Posted by Sammy_boy
Problem is Govi, I love smoking too! Which is probably why I feel like crap at the moment! But I can't continue to do it, I don't want my health or bank balance suffering!

But I know how bad it is for me, and it is costing me (and my wife as she's given up too) a fortune which we can better spend elsewhere, like on the house, paying off debts in my case, saving towards something nice, etc.

@sammy

Mate, it'll be hard but if you see it through you'll notice soo much of a difference, like you said your health will improve, finances will be better etc
I hope you succeed!

@govi

They're not trying to scare people, its the real effects of smoking, if it scares you, then maybe you should take a leaf outta sammy's book and quit yourself, but if you fancy the slow death go ahead...

Cheers

well i did give up drinking, thats gonna save me some money, coz usually around 20% of my monthly income goes into that. have not touched booze for the past 3 weeks. although the urge is overpowering, i buy a bottle of coke and imagine that to be beer.... (how pathetic)

Posted by mcrosser
Well, even though I am a 16 yo guy, I 've never smoked, I cna't find a reason to do it really. Life is hard too, even if you're 16, and I have to face it. I know when I'm older I will have greater challenges and I will face them too. I'm definately against smoking, to me it seems the easiest way of forgetting about problems but later that becomes an even greater problem than the one you just "tried to forget". Really a bad friend imo. cheers

First of all i have not read this thread, but i would like to say well done! I dispise smoking, not the person though. Heres to you keeping it up, dont give in!

Posted by Sammy_boy
Thanks for the support!

I'm having a better day today thank goodness, didn't have a good day yesterday, not in the best of moods and a bit short-tempered. Got a day of work today and tomorrow, and seem to be in a better frame of mind today.

Though am noticing now that my appetite is starting to grow now, and it was pretty big before, I'm going to get fat!

But at least I'll be fat but a non-smoker!

Posted by spikeyjac
hey just an idea but with the money u save from smokin u culd go to the gym nd lose all this weight ure gonna put on lol

Posted by Sammy_boy
Gyms are against my religion lol!

Hell with striplighting! I'd rather go for a good walk!

Posted by spikeyjac
lol well u culd use all ure new money to buy lotsa new fings then tht uva alwayz wanted?

Posted by Sammy_boy
Not posted an update for a while, but you'll be pleased to hear I still haven't had a fag!

My mood though has been up and down more times than a whore's knickers, feeling great one moment, then down in the dumps the next. I've bought a load of cheap phones to fix, try to keep myself occupied and not thinking about cigarettes, also started re-reading The Hobbit and then probably Lord of The Rings, great escapism that should help take my mind off it.... despite the fact half the main characters all smoke pipes!

The fact my wife's also given up has meant we've both been moody, been sorely tempted to have 'just one', but have resisted the temptation.

I'm on a night shift at the moment, so this will be a big test of my willpower as due to the quieter nature of nights the temptation for a crafty one is bigger.... Hopefully won't be climbing the walls in a couple of hours!

im sure youll be fine sammy boy.. jsut think of yoiur wee lungs..

Posted by Sammy_boy
I'm just going to have a puff on my plastic 'pretend' cigarette, one of those nicotine replacement therapy things, kinda helps a bit but not the same as a fag!

But yes, I'm thinking of my health, and all the money I won't be spending on fags, I won't miss that!

Posted by axxxr
I'm having a fag right now and hate myself for smoking it...but on the other hand it also makes me feel better.

I need to gather my will power somehow as you did sammy and kick the habit!

Posted by Sammy_boy
I'm very envious of you and that fag.... though I guess I'm glad to be free of the habit!

I've heard from other ex-smokers and my own experience though that it's very hard to stay stopped... the actual giving up isn't THAT hard, but staying that way is the trick. Many (myself included) fall down when thinking they can have 'just the one', or have the odd one 'socially', but that's usually the start of the slippery slope! I'm just one cigarette away from being addicted again

Posted by spikeyjac
did u eva manage to giv up?

Posted by 02
Hey at great way to end 06 and start fresh in 07.... keep it up

Posted by Sammy_boy
Yes and no - stayed mostly given up, though been having the odd cigarette of late, no more than one or two a day, though got to make sure that doesn't become 10-15 like it used to be... can't afford to go back to smoking that much anyway, if I can stay at this I'd be happy

I have however put just over a stone in weight on after giving up, been eating like a pig instead of smoking!

Posted by Rookwise
I quit a the beginning of the year and was doing well until 2 weeks ago when I ended up smoking again

Posted by Xugaa
Well done mate, keep it up!

Failure is not an option!!!
