Hi looking to purchase a new PC, i have found one but it comes with the following "TV Tuner"
====
Integrated Analogue TV tuner PCI card and Dell™ MCE remote control
====

I was wondering.. would i need to purchase a TV licence for this, even if im not watchin TV from the PC?

Any help is appreciated

Thank You

If it has a TV tuner then you will need a License...even if your not watching it.

ahhh no i dont have the option to buy the PC without the TV tuner... so that'll be anoth 130 odd per year...

hmmm any way around this.... short of buying a different PC?

You could just not tell anyone!

It's interesting that in Ireland at the moment, there is a debate amongst government agencies as to whether or not new live broadcast capable 3G phones require a TV licence.

Just an after thought

hmm i was thinking that... cos im not going to be using the connection... i'd probably just take the tuner out once i got the PC!

So surely i cant be "found out" lol.... can i?

A quote from the tvlicencing site:

"If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one."

USE being the important word in that sentence... hmmm im still unsure

Step 1: remove power from computer (pull the ketle lead out)
Step 2: Press the on button on the pc this drains the MB of all power
Step 3 push both hands on the shell to remove static
Step 4: find the PCI card (white slot)
Step 5: UNscrew the card
Step 6: remove card by pulling towadrs you
Step 7: replace shell
Step 8: turn PC on and ahy presto it may even be a tad quicker

Just make absolutely sure that by 'Integrated', they don't mean that it's combined with either the graphics card or the sound card.

It's unlikely to be integrated with the graphics card, being PCI, but Dell does have a tendancy to use a lot of very strange customised parts!

Personally I wouldn't by any PC with 'integrated' bits in it

dell use old stock thats y the prices r so low they buy exgrade stock brand it and sell it dirt cheap like a weatherspoons pub buys 1 week before best before date larger

Thanks for the step by step slugworth

@Cycovision
No i dont think it is... becase i have a seperate graphics card and sound card installed. But i may ring up dell tonite to ask them what its all about

Thanks both of you!

He's taking the PC to Uni halls of residence, Reg. You do need your own license there. God I hate the beeb / TV Licensing Nazis, when I was at Uni five students were caught and given the maximum fine 'to make an example of them'.

B******s, they are. I wouldn't mind if there was anything decent on the beeb but it's getting worse than bloody ITV High time the beeb paid for itself through advertising, they advertise their own crappy products anyway.

Sorry, rant over, back on topic

do somethign like I did - buy a mac then a mini usb key for tv which allows you to tune into the freeview, and pack it up and hide it away when not using it lol

Cunning like a fox

if your living in halls you dont have to let them in to check that you have a tv, so you wont get caught

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
they use equipment to test for tvs, they dont need access to the halls although they do have to tell the uni when they are scanning

Yeah, I have one of those freeview USB thingies too, they're pretty good!

When I was uni though, there was no such thing as a PC TV Tuner. I had to hide my portable telly behind the facia board that covered the plumbing for the wash basin in my room whenever I knew they were scanning the area

Never got caught

If you remove the kettle lead and then touch the case you will not remove static. The kettle needs to be plugged into both the pc and wall socket (doesnt have to be turned on) as the static electricity will then pass through the case from you and straight down the lead through the earth pin and to ground.
This I learnt at college where I studed microelectronics and computer engineering.
