Right after reading the old thread about having a esato radio I have spent the last 24 hours trying to get it working, and I think now it is.

If you click this link:

http://86.128.129.87:8000/listen.m3u

you should start to hear some music, this is esato FM

I have no idea how well this will kick off, but what id like to do is take song requests? Anyonle like the sound of that?

Althoguh I have about 4000 sos I don't have them all, if you really want tme to play your songs and I don't have it I will provide a email addy to email it to.

If I get enough requests tonight I will put on a requests hour at about 8pm ish?

Let me know your thoughts on this

enjoy people

This is great...nice one luke!.....most of us listen to some type of music whilst online so why not have a dedicated Esato Radio Station..I think this really has potential.

Luke could you play me George Michael's new track \"Easier affair\" if you have it?

Cheers!

Are you going to do traditional DJ 'links' in you best Smashie and Nicie voice?

Great idea Luke, and well done for putting it into practice!

Posted by axxxr
Luke you could also do member interviews and a gadget News hour section....just broadcast stuff what esato members want!....a bit of World News and Politics thrown in would be good aswell! (i'll host that if you want)

Posted by shyam335
Nice effort, how much up speed u have? (Itll choke if there are too many people,u know)

I was thinking along the same line, but my idea was diffrent,a radio for mobile.
My upload sucks so much that i cant host it for more than 5 people at a time.

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
thanks for the kind words guys, first request is set up, at 8pm im guna play just the requests (and if I don't have enough I will bunk in some random stuff)

@ sammy - im working on voices, although so far im not sure how to initialise a input for this yet, I could prerecord then then add them in, but it could be quite hard to do it that way, so I want to try to do live input)

@ axxxr - request is in and it is the first one coming on tonight

Not to be bitchy know, but do you have the rights to play the songs on a internett radio? Ya know.. Don't want RIAA to sue you

this is just a tester (personal use), not for a professional/comercial use so should be ok

ok i'll see what i can do.

Just a thought but could'nt you do a live input through MSN Messenger somehow?

Posted by Cycovision
Not if it's shoutcast you can't

Posted by Sammy_boy
Another request - Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars?

@axxxr - I think a political debate would be good - e.g. 'The house believes the Palestinians are terrorists/Israelies are terrorists' etc., and have you and scotsboy going head to head!

We could have Miss UK or Miss Copperfield doing a Women's hour perhaps, Axxxr doing the gadget/technology hour, any other suggestions?

Could even set up a podcast perhaps?

Posted by Cycovision
@sammy_boy

I do hope that you're taking the proverbial? Judging by the smilies I take it that you are!

Otherwise, that is possibly the worst idea since Adolf Hitler decided that Poland would make a nice place to build a second condo

Since political debate is a sensitive subject in the forums maybe a live on-air debate would be the best way to give members the choice to express their opinions freely without the mods having a hard time doing their job.

womens hour ect would be good aswell...the possibilites are endless.Sammy_boy maybe you could host a \"mobile Clinic\" hour for all repair and hardware issues?

Posted by Cycovision
OK, since yet again you've chosen to ignore me, I'll make it quite clear:

SORRY, BUT YOU CAN'T DO THAT KIND OF THING WITH SHOUTCAST!

You need some pretty heavy server-side stuff to do live webcasts

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
for a live mobile discussion skype would be best because you get a decent line and im sure you can do conference calls on it?

@ sammy - ive put your request in place

Posted by Cycovision
hallelujah!

Alternatively, one of the many voice chat clients like MSN, Yahoo etc. could work

Posted by brix25
I can already see it...Esato News: Presented by Axxxr- we try to be fair but at times we're very unbalanced.
The idea of a audio stream is good but what about the folks who mostly use their mobiles to browse Esato? How about making some segments available in *amr format?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
tbh I have no idea how to do that, and although id like to this is a starting point whcih means we cant dive in, investing allot of time and money into getting equipment etc before seeing how well its working...

also I know someone is connected listening right now, but have no idea who lol

Its called freedom of expression... sometimes we don't like what we hear so we decide to call it unbalanced..besides don't we hear unbalanced news on TV everyday?..ie: Fox News-CNN ect...but lets leave that for a on-air debate shall we.

Luke another request for you mate.... Green Day: Don't wanna be an (bleep) idiot!

Its me mate....been listening all along since you announced it!

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
can't find that one mate, what album is it off?

Posted by Cycovision
Look, I'm really not trying to put a damper on this, but I do have a fair bit of experience with webcasting due to a rather horrible job that I used to have

You have two basic options. Streaming a playlist of pre-recorded material (like you're doing now) or encoding live audio on the fly, which generally involves a fairly powerful server, preferably dedicated, and specialist software.

If you want to broadcast a discussion or gadget hour, by far the best way would be to conduct the sesion over skype, msn, etc. and use audio capture software to record the whole thing. Think of the benefits. It can be edited before being encoded to mp3 ready for broadcast.

The same stream could also then be encoded to any number of formats, including .amr, and the session could be split up into fragments to facilitate downloading for people on low bandwidth connections like GPRS.

Live stuff over the internet is pretty heavy and not all that easy to do. There might be free stuff out there to help make it happen, there might not be. There certainly never used to be. Either way, don't you agree that pre-recording is a good idea all round, at least to start with?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
@ cyco - I agree with you, right now I don't have the technology to do a live cast, let allone doing oen with mutiple people, I wouldnt know where to begin, but for things such as news and debats I think it would be a great idea to do them via skype just because its much easier (for me)

the one thing is im not using shoutcast and as of yet im not fully sure what I can and cannot do although am experimenting slowly with it.

It could be possible for me to do a live broadcast right now although for me to do this I would have to sort out allot of things.

p.s. I wanst ignoring you earlier just listening to you before replying

Its off the Album American Idiot. don't wanna be an american idiot

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
lol such an idiot I am, was browsing the net etc never occured to me it was the lyrics,

its on the requests

Posted by Cycovision
@luke

No worries mate, I've had a very bad day and I wasn't aiming that post at anyone in particular!

What streaming software are you using then? I assumed it was shoutcast from the port director in the URL, that's all. As I said, I'm quite into webcasting so I'd be very interested to know what you're using. I have a mac too so it doesn't matter if it's mac only

@axxxr: If you know Fox News Channel's tagline you would've known that I was taking a jab at them and other mainstream outlets.

Posted by axxxr
And i thought you were beng sarcastic...never mind, need to think of a good tagline for our news..any ideas?

Yeh cheers luke...listening now!

Posted by Sammy_boy
yay! My request's on now!

It was a bit stop start at first but seems to be OK for the moment!

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
hmmm very odd, I know my bro is playing a load of games, so probally that.

Keep me posted on any quality issues etc, I just had a loud error beep although not sure what from

A picture of whats coming:

Posted by Sammy_boy
It's playing through media player on my PC, seems to stream great for a minute or two, then stop, needing me to press the 'play' button again and it takes another minute or so to re-buffer before starting up again.

Could be my 'net connection's too slow, it's a 1Mbps connection so I wouldn't have thought so?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
hmmm odd

just paused and disconnected everyone

I just paused it and changed the quality to normal radio, see how that does it for you, should help improve it for all listeniers

Mines working find at the moment although i did need to press play again on wmp a couple of times for it to restart again...im on a 8 Mb connection so it might have something to do with that.

Posted by Sammy_boy
Much better my end, no need to press the 'play' button again so far - the change in quality is very noticeable, but at least it's playing reliably! Could be worth experimenting with different qualities to see how it goes. Also, would the number of people listening affect the reliability of the connection?

It could be those with less than a certain connection speed might struggle at the higher sound qualities (like me), though my wife's on the 'net atm too, though nothing more than light surfing and IM.

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
hmmmm yeh, I think one of the main problems is my bandwidth is being hogged

I downgraded the quality to somthing like 56kbs (radio is that on mono normally) on stereo which is crap, I think I should change it up again to about 96kbs stereo and that will improve things.

upgraded quality now, what do you guys think?

So far so good on 96kbps, sound quality's more than acceptable, and so far (touchwood) no stopping or pausing.

Posted by scottt
yeah was stopping and starting for me earlier works a treat now

Posted by Sammy_boy
It's just stopped and rebuffered for about 45 secs at the start of Delta Goodrem's track.... and it just stopped again needing me to press play, otherwise playing like a dream!

Don't know if that's because of traffic your end or my internet connection.

Posted by scottt
Same thing happened here sammyboy

Posted by fatreg
spot on for me..

had born to try and the start of fix you so far..

no rebuffering or anyting..

been spot on..

fatreg

bravo

Posted by jcwhite_uk
Nice going Luke. Mine works for about 30 seconds then I have to press play again. To many people listening to you?

Posted by jcwhite_uk
Working ok now.

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
ok thats tonights broadcast finnished.

appart froma few cut outs how was it? I found I usually had 2/4 listeners at a time.

any improvments, or recomendations please let me know

edit: I have just discovered how I can:

broadcase live messages i.e. me talking

and possibly even a live broadcast of say 2 presenters talking over skype. (this could also be a discussion such as me and axxxr debating the benifits of mobile phones on tisticular cancer lol)

Luke that was very good for a first broadcast....im sure over time things will improve.

Just an idea but how about willing members can host the broadcast each day so as not to put too much pressure on one individual..that way it also adds variety and keeps things interesting.
