I am presently using Airtel Postpaid, MAINLY,ONLY,ESPECIALLY for their GPRS service, Mobile Office. It's for Rs.399 per month with a 100MB download limit. Now, Mobile Office is available on prepaid as well. So it comes for Rs.12 per day in Mumbai, which is Rs.360/372 per month and APPARENTLY with no download limit. ................so I would love to change to prepaid but I want to make sure there's no catch... SO could you pleeease answer these questions?

1) Are any sites blocked on Airtel PREPAID gprs?
2) IS there any download limit? ( I asked the customer care but they didn't know that there was even a download limit for postpaid GPRS)
3)Can we send/receive emails with the email client?

Posted by mrao
hehe....airtel still charges me a flat 199/- per month for unlimited usage on Mobile Office on my postpaid connection..... I guess they are benevolent towards old customers

Posted by neha10
@mrao you lucky guy
Anybody who can answer my questions? There must be a lot of Airtel GPRS users in Mumbai...

Posted by Indiandawg
first of all i use airtel postpaid and m paying only 199 per month for mobile office are you sure you pay 399 bucks?

Posted by neha10
@Indiandawg yes I'm sure I pay Rs.399. It's a noticeable difference in amount-howcould I miss it? I think all old customers are still charged only Rs.199.

Come on, there must be some Airtel Prepaid users here...or else I'll have to call customer care...the last time I called, the call was taken by a guy who didn't even know that Prepaid users have GPRS...he kept me on hold for a long time before coming back with stuff I already knew. I don't think I can handle calls with these cc guys...there was a time when they were informed...now even the cc is cheap and Airtel doesn't provide any information about their GPRS services anywhere on their website except a brief mention of Mobile Office;no tariff rates, no activation info, nothing.

yup mobile office... And speeds are pathetic to say the least...

Posted by mrao
With an EDGE enabled phone...i get a consistent speed of 20 to 23 KBps..... but again...it also depends on how close you are located to the nearest tower

Posted by Evil Eye
i get 7-8kbps download speed and sometimes a bit more.

Posted by mrao
Thats as good as not having an internet connection at all

Posted by Evil Eye
yeah i know that.
thats why i have DataOne broadband connection at my home.

but now am using MO on k-jam. coz it doesnt supports airtel online

it takes much time when i download a mp3 song.

Posted by whizkidd
I'd throw a party if i get 5Kbps on mobile office using the ngage...

I think whiz meant 5 KBps (Kilobytes) ...not Kbps (Kilobits)

Posted by Evil Eye
@mrao then i think i get better download speed than whiz.

i get 7KBps

@dheeraj1 how can we get MO for free?

Posted by whizkidd
yup KBps it was....

I rarely get speeds above 4 KBps..thats roughly 32kbps... Should improve with a better GPRS class device as the ngae is only class 6.

How much does AIRTEL charge for Edge? Do I have to get a new card or something? Please help.

Posted by blu_6779
you don't have to do anything at all, the phone will do most of the work .

Posted by neha10
you mean I just have to register for Mobile Office and my phone would catch the EDGE network? No separate set of settings or a different plan than Mobile Office?

Posted by blu_6779
the only thing you will need is an edge capable phone.

Posted by neha10
Cool. thanks blu.

Neha...when ever U call Airtel CC 4 GPRS related queries, talk 2 the GPRS tecnical DEPT. 2 do that U'd need 2 call 121 & then 1 for English...3 for added services 4 for GPRS & then 4 again for the tec exe. ( Hope it is still the same as being in Dubai...ven't tried it 4 a while)
I don't think U can goback 2 prepaid on the same no 1s U R Postpaid user...but U can always get a new prepaid sim card (make sure U get the Life Time prepaid as U get moreTalk time if U don't need validity)
Speeds depend on the area (as mrao mentioned) & Ur cell phone (I got better speed on Class 6 EDGE device like 6020 than class 10 like 6680/6681...more compatible with Airtel system according 2 a tecnical exe)
Cost is Rs 12.00/day as far as I could find out (Don't think its 11.50 as mentioned by dheeraj...not that there's a major diff) n not 360/month as than it would be 372 for months with 31 days more over & U can discontinue using it in 5 day n be charged Rs 60 for 5 days (otherwise it would be 360 even when U r discontinuing it)
There is no download limit & non of the sites are blocked but U would ve a tough time downloading 4m File housting sites which are restrict 2 one download/IP as Airtel shares the same IP 4 all the users...but then again there R ways 4 which U can PM me when U come across them.
I suppose this answers all Ur quries that might ve lready been answered...I just thought I had 2 put in post my Hours of talking 2 Airtel CC & tec.exe (the executable file that works on Airtel's GPRS OS)

Posted by blu_6779
@has what is tec.exe and what does it do? Here in Kochi it is just plug & play .

Posted by neha10
THANKS BLU AND HAS33!!! now that my questions are answered, I'LL PROBABLY change to prepaid.

First of all AirTel charges different amount for differen circles.
II. No site except Yahoo! Geocities is blocked by AirTel pre or postpaid GPRS.
III. No download upload limit on per day MO.
IV. You can use any application with per day MO!

Posted by whizkidd

Posted by DHILLON
@NEHA10 yeah BSNL provide unlimited GPRS usage for only Rs.199 /- but thats only for POSTPAID users and BSNL doesn't have EDGE tech.

I was on 199/- but they now charge 399 since july 1.. thts wht the dozy airtel guys said..
