I guess my PC is nothing compared to the last 2 posts.Really it's time for an upgrade.
Posted by brix25
@jmash: Don't compare yourself to those two...unless you're going to be running heavy applications/games on your PC a Celeron should do the trick, anything more would be a waste.

Ok I get it now.You guys have a lot of stuff on your computers.I guess is for running those heavy apps. and playing games.Since l don't play games l think l must just replace the motherboard with a P4,I currently use Celeron R which is a bit slow!
Posted by Cycovision
Absolutely right
And I work in the trade so I sometimes get very cheap bits
Posted by Glenny
one i use now:
Dunno bout mobo
CPU: 2.7GHz
80 gb hard drive
256mb ram
intel 821 something graphics
i dont know much

AMD Sempron (
Samsung 1gig ram ddr
maxtor 200gb SATA hard drive

Amd 64 3000+ (socket 754), 512 ram, upgrading to 2gb soon..
Posted by Glenny
noo whizkid! you are a victim of socket 754 like me! no processor upgrades, so you gotta splash out on a new mobo as well. It sucks!
Posted by Xugaa
1GB should do it Whizkidd...
Depending on what your doing, going to 2GB is really only needed for heavy gaming etc.
Posted by govigov
well whiz has about 3 OS installed in his system including his favourite "knoppix"
Posted by whizkidd
well...you don't need to "install" knoppix.. Just boot from the Dvd

There are lot's of things you can use buckets of RAM for, not just games. I run serveral virtual machines at once sometimes - 1GB RAM is VERY useful there, 2 even more so.
My machine is a P4 3.0GHz, intel mobo, 1.25GB of RAM, 120GB HDD, DVD burner, 400W True Power(tm) PSU, digital sound (onboard), RADEON 9250 128MB video, Avermedia TV card (analog), 17in TFT, Creative Cambridge Sound Works surround sound system.
Posted by shyam335
Indeed, more the RAM its better. I often fill my RAM by multitasking alone. and remember vista will eat your RAM,i reckon 2Gb or even 4G RAM will be needed by vista for multitasking and gaming.

Well talking about RAM,I have 704MB(512 & 256) of it on my pc and it's still slow at times and l don't do heavy stuff on it,with a 2.53 processor and Intel Celeron.I don't get it.Why so slow!

There's far too many reasons for a PC slowing down to mention them all here, but the three biggest culprits are probably
- Too many apps and / or services running in the background. Use MSCONFIG to do a 'clean' boot (safe mode is not clean enough) and see if it runs any quicker If it does, it's time for a clean up or, for best results, a back-up and reinstall.
- Malware (viruses, spyware etc). Sometimes, just one piece of malware can make your PC crawl.
- Hardware issues, usually the hard drive. If the hard drive is beginning to fail, the computer will have trouble reading and writing data. Rather than just giving up, the PC will keep on trying resulting in slow operation, hanging, sticky mouse pointer etc.
Like I said, there's tons of reasons for a slow PC but they're the most common causes I see in the workshop. You also have to take into consideration that you have a Celeron processor which, due to a smaller level 2 cache, is not as good at multitasking as a Pentium 4 of the same speed.

Posted by Cycovision
lightscribe enables you to create professional looking CD lables by directly laser-etching the design onto the top of the CD itself.
