new version of m3 is out, 0.87.0

http://www.vapulus.com/w900i/M3-0.8.7.0-Installer.exe

lots of fixes, and DVD disc support added. See the changelog.txt for details.

Posted by iori57
cool!
how do I use auto update? do i need to download the latest installer first? Can I directly update with the current version of m3?

Posted by mysh
m3 should ask you to update when you load m3, if a newer version is available to download.

Posted by iori57
maybe my hostel proxy is blocking m3 from accessing the net...
it didn't tell me there's an update

no worries, its just my proxy problem

thanks!

just tried one avi file that I can't convert I dunno why.. when i added the file and click Convert the "current process" bar just run a tiny bit then everything stopped and it just opens the destination folder (where all the converted files will be placed) and didn't do the conversion..

Try and install the vbasic runtime files .. vbrun something.

Posted by mysh
it's the .net runtime files, nothing to do with visual basic per se.

get them here....

http://www.microsoft.com/down[....]DD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

but anyway, that doesn't sound iori's problem...

could you send the lastrun.log to the email address provided when you click the Help button in m3, thanks!

well i've had the same problem as iori and yesterday when i tried to convert a saw 3 trailer which is .mov it converted to 100 percent, opened the folder where i converted the file and there was nothing why is that?

Posted by xan K
one nooby question, should I use 1-pass or 2-pass video proccess? what I care most is about video quality, but does the 2-pass really improves quality?

Posted by jj03
2nd pass does help, in that it removes dead frames..but it takes much much longer...

Posted by jj03
hey mysh, just re download the files after installing windows xp pro on my computer...installed all files, but when i launch the program, it says it has encountered a problem and will close....any idea's?

Posted by dcuk
Hi Mysh,

I love the idea of your software but as yet have not been able to get results, please see example picture, every video I have tried has been grabbed from a DTV card (720x576 pal aspect is 1.25) and have tried all built in crop options which leads me onto point two!

Please can you add manual cropping features into your program? Without your software I always use virtualdubmod first to do this before I encode and understand it requires more calculations in relation to PAR and DAR

I think the problem my be your software is giving the information that my videos (720x576 pal) are aspect 1.33 when they are actually 1.25

anybody running xp pro?

Posted by xan K
I'm running XP Pro with .Net framework 1.1 SP1 and 2.0 and everything is working fine. dunno what could be wrong with you.

Posted by jj03
did you just install 1.1 from microsoft and that was it?

Posted by jj03
i don't have service pack1..just service pack 2...anybody know if its necessary to install service pack 1? just tried, but it stated that the service pack i have is newer than the one i was downloading and gave an error..

Posted by xan K
when you say Service Pack 2, you mean Windows XP SP2 or .Net 1.1 SP2, because I've never heard of any SP2 for .Net framework. Now there are 1.1 and 2.0 frameworks, they're not the same and version 2.0 won't replace version 1.1, they're both installed along each other.

apologies to mobile readers for the large quote.

dcuk, the problem in that screenshot looks to be a colourspace error.

What i need from you is the file format (eg. avi) and the codecs in use. This information is in the lastrun.log file after you try to convert the video.

Could you email me the lastrun.log for that video to m3bugs at gmail.com, thanks.

As you're used to using virtuladubmod, it'd be great if you create a short clip of the video and email me that too. Set the video and audio streams to "direct stream copy", use the edit - delete option to remove most of the video, leaving a short 30 second clip, then save as avi. Email me the short clip with the lastrun.log, cheers!

about the PAR, 1.25 is close enough to 1.33 that you won't see any aspect distortion from m3 treating the video as 1.33. I am planning to add manual cropping adjustment at some point, but m3 is currently alpha software and i have other larger features to work on first.

seriously, the 1.25 aspect isn't a significant problem, you won't be able to tell any real difference between 1.33 and 1.25, they're too close. Aspect is only a problem when it's a large difference like 1.33 and 1.77 (16:9 widescreen). so manual cropping at this point isn't an urgent feature, but it will be included later.

other replies...

pepi, could you email me the lastrun.log for the mov file that didn't output a video? Thank you.

jj03, you need the .net 2.0 framework, you can get it here...

http://www.microsoft.com/down[....]DD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

about 2 pass encoding for mobile devices....

traditionally 2 pass is used to improve video quality, it does this by assigning more bitrate to difficult parts of a video, and less bitrate to easy parts.

however mobile phones have quite low maximum bitrates, and normal 2 pass encoding would make the video unwatchable, because the phone can't handle the extra bitrate that would be used on difficult scenes in the video.

so 2-pass in m3 is designed not to improve video quality (because it's simply not possible to do that on a phone using higher bitrates, as mentioned above). Instead 2-pass can be used to reduce the video file size, by maintaining maximum possible bitrate on difficult scenes (just like 1 pass), but making use of the lower bitrate on easy scenes in the video. Essentially you get the same quality as 1 pass for difficult scenes in the video, and the benefits of 2 pass to save file size on the easy scenes in the video.

Someone asked me for the feature to be included in m3, so i added it, but i don't personally think a 10-20% saving in filesize is worth the 70% longer conversion time that 2-pass creates.

mysh, i installed .net framework 2 previously, but it gave me an error..plus, it says windows xp in the system requirements, not xp pro...

ok..everything sorted..thanks to everyone who helped. much appreciated.

Hi Mysh,

I have been folowing this thread and downloaded the latest installer. However when I run it it states I need to read and accept the Nero end user license agreement, however just a blank user form loads... no text box, no license agreement, no control, no buttons.

I have reinstalled twice now. any advice??

Posted by mysh
make sure m3 is allowed internet access by your firewall. It needs to download a web page to show the license agreement and then download the nero codec. This is for legal reasons, i can't distribute the nero codec with the software directly.

I'm taking a few days off to go holiday here, but i'll be checking my email, so if anyone finds a bugs/problem, send it to m3bugs at gmail.com, thanks.

Hi Mysh,

I've emailed you all the videos you asked for plus others in hope they will be helpful.

As for aspect I know what you mean but do like my circles as near as possible.

1.25

1.33

As for my last post the files are originally DTV TS mpg format but M3 won't complete a conversation,
so converted to PS mpg using VideoReDo, I've not had any problems with the files format in other software.

I've sent you all samples including a PS mpg converted using virtualdubmod to avi which will then work ok in M3, look forward to hearing your findings.

Back to manual cropping here are a couple of pics actually converted using M3 the cut and pasted onto a K800i photo to explain

The best built in crop possible to remove black bars using M3

Manually cropped using Virtualdubmod then encoded using M3

Hope this helps!
Sorry for long post,
Dcuk

KEY: TS=Transport Stream (DigitalTV cards save as this)
PS=Programme Stream (Normal .mpg file format)

Mysh,

The problem is I am installing it on a machine with no internet connection. Long story. Is there any way I can manually download the codec, and prevent M3 from attempting to connect to the net. Is there a .ini file I can alter etc??

Posted by shazzydoosh
Mysh,

It's all ok, I followed a link from earlier in the thread and downloaded Nero coded and put it in the M3 directory.. working ok. Trying to convert now. Have you any way of croping the length of the movie filre like in Super. E.g. only record 10min starting at xx:xx:xx....

Hi, thanks for this great software.
I have a quiestion about dvd conversion. When I use a dvd, m3 crashes when it is about to copy the files from the dvd. I found a workaround with that. I just copied the dvd to the hd with dvddecrypter. But I still have a problem. The subtitle option is not working. I can choose my language (include subtitles) in the DialogDVD menu, but there is no subtitles in the encoded video. I can see a add subtitles button in the menu also, but this is greyed out. Is this function implemented yet?

Ps: where is the donate button?

hi,

Can someone help me, Im new to M3. All I want to do is convert files (*.mpg, *.avi, *.mov...) for use on my K800i. This means I need M3 to convert to a *.mp4 or *.3gp. The problem is when I try to convert a *.mov file, M3 creates an *.avi.

EIther I am doing something wrong (which means it isn't that intuitive) or it isn't possible.

Any advice guys?

Posted by mysh
m3 will never output an avi file, it isn't possible.

in fact, the only avi files it ever creates are temp.avi and tempavi.avi, and both of those files are only temporary, and are only ever created in the temp folder.

what i think you're doing is looking in the temp folder instead of the output folder.

If you look in the output folder, you will find mp4 files, or nothing. In the case of the latter, send the lastrun.log to m3bugs at gmail.com. ta.

i think it's pretty intuitive to use m3, you basically add some files, select your phone, and press convert. I don't know how to make that any easier!

Posted by shazzydoosh
Mysh,

You are correct, it sems very intuative.. select your model, it creates the correct output. But in this case I loked in the Output folder and there was a compressed file, that played in windows media folder, with the original name of my clip (rocky 6 trailer ) but with the extension avi.

I will look for this last run file and send it when I get the chance.

Posted by shazzydoosh
Mysh,

I had a look at the Last run log file, it indicated at the bottom that it was finding no audio, and therefore skipping the file after video encryption, and I guess not completing the conversion. I changed the audio codec on the off chance it would work (from the..V2 to the first codec in the list - not at that machine sorry). And It worked.

Thanks for the help anyways

@mysh, would it be possible to put an option to resize the app since i have a 15-inch monitor running at 800x600, a part of the app display gets cut out. Right now i have to change my display settings to 1024x768 manually in order to see the conversion process. Thanks

Posted by RandomHero
I am having the same problem as pepi and iori.

I click convert and all that happens is it opens the destination folder and deletes my original video.

i can send you the lastrun.log if you tell me how to get it. Im a bit of a noob with this sort of thing.

Thanks

Posted by masterv
Don't know if this is a bug, but your temp folder must be another as the final folder, because if you close m3 after the convert it delets all files in the temp folder.

Posted by Pepi
@RandomHero the lastrun.log file is in the folder of the program.

mysh explained to me about a file which was .avi, it had to be .wmv, but still there is the problem with the .mov file that i can't convert

Posted by dcuk
Hi mysh,

I seem to have problems when encoding audio but am hoping my message might help with a possible solution!

I know your software is Alpha, you asked for people to send problems, so here we go,

whenever I encode just audio the results seem really iffy compared to a full video&audio encode (plus the resulting file won't play in media player as there is some information missing in the file header)

(Any chance of 'drag & drop' for files to be encoded with M3)?

Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Dcuk

UPDATE:

I followed the advice given by mysh and am now being amazed at how good the Nero sound conversion is going through M3!

if you go for full compression HE AAC v2 at very low bit rates (I find 32bit the best and is the lowest bitrate to still hold all audio dynamics, try it and see!)

The problem I had (see above) is that I didn't know there are very few media players that can handle the encoded file due to the very complex way the file is compressed (I won't go into details (hey! who cheered then!)

Foobar2000 is one
http://www.foobar2000.org/

The other is the latest version of Winamp
http://www.winamp.com/

Both FREE!

Other players will either not play the file (inc. Windows media player) or will choke while trying! Some will only manage to play the m4a file in mono (yuck!)

So if you think the sound of your low bitrate m4a/mp4's is poor, give one of the players above ago and be trully amazed at what can be achieved!

Thank you again to Mysh for his really hard work and the amount of time he's putting into M3!

Cheers,
Dcuk

Hi mysh,
Thank you for your reply.

Another quick one about aspects, I mentioned before that I use 1.25 when I manually crop and you're using 1.33, the real conversion PAR should be 1.22 when converting from 720x576 as 8 lines either side of the frame are not usually used so it's actually 704x576 or 704/576=1.2222 which produces the nearest circle you can get, 320x240 has a DAR of 4:3 PAR 1.3333 but in encoding we should use the source file for PAR calculation instead of the destination PAR

1.33

1.22

Screen grabs from 'Pussycat dolls - Buttons video'
cropped and resized 320x240

(I forgot till now, I used to use 1.25 on the k750i as the way I used to encode videos to get full 25fps smooth as silk was a lower resolution that was stretched to fill the screen so needed 1.25 to fix the proportions at the time)

Hope this helps in some small way with your program!
Cheers,
Dcuk

Hey! your M3 thing is great!!

i was trying to get podcasts to work on my K800, but M3 dosent recognise the
M4V format! is there any extra download or somthing to make it work?

they are podcasts from unofficial sources, and dont contain any protection, so they work. Podcasts from Itunes cannot be changed

Try to rename it to .mov and see if it works. Otherwise you need a codec for that format.

hi, i have the latest version of m3 installed, with the net framework and codecs but have problems when i try to convert a dvd for my k800, it starts and then gives me a VOB error. i first believed it to be cos it was an alpha copy of the program, but a friend has installedit on his pc and it works fine. the only difference is that he's on an earlier version ofm3, but when i have that version oni can't even selct the dvd option.

please can someone help me?

Posted by seahaven
so where are the shared videos for the k800 phone....pls post links...

Posted by blunden
mysh: I have a clip that can't be converted with the "keep aspect ratio" setting. PM me and I will upload it for you.

Posted by baste07
is tehre a size limit on what movie size the k800 can play?

Posted by jj03
Not particularly..most movies are around 700 - 800 mb in size...and after conversion, 200 - 300 mb with m3, depending on phone of course.
