Official K800/790 Video Thread

First of all it would be nice for us to share our thoughts and ideas on the best video conversion settings in your opinion/other for the K800/790, to get the best quality and most fluent videos we can. A question that I personally am dying to know.

Also of course we can share videos, tips, ideas and clips etc!

(Please also refrain from posting videos that will or may breach copy right laws, otherwise the thread will have to be shut down, though I don't see anything wrong in small clips, other videos, trailers etc. Just be careful!)

Thanks and enjoy!

Well, 350 vid bit rate, 64 for sound, give's me superb quality. No skipping, No mis sync problem's...i use either recode2, or imtoo..

Posted by Xugaa
Yeah my favourite program to use is ImTOO MPEG Encoder...

Posted by shyam335
Hey we saw it can take more than that
400k for video and 128k for audio should give good audio and video.

Those bitrates were too high for me (MP4). I'm trying 350/64 MP4 with ImTOO now.

Posted by bobby_hill
i'm using Super 8 and the best results i've had is 336kbps (240x320 30fps) mp4 with aac @ 128. smooth video and great sound.

I also just tried 384kbps but it stuttered in parts.

Posted by Lleoman
350/96 MP4 worked for me (ImTOO), don't want any lower video bitrate than that. Maybe I'm gonna try 350/128 but that will probably be too high.

edit: Tried with 350/128 now and it looked okay and in sync after 4 minutes! One little flaw though: Sometimes it appears large blocks in black or white for a sec or so in the picture. I don't see those blocks when playing the same file in QT. Any ideas about what causes that?

bobby_hill: I think the video limit is somewhere around 350, 384 stuttered for me too.

sahran: both work without problems. What's the bitrate for audio and video on them?

Posted by sahran
sounds good

the bitrate for both files is (300/96 for video&audio)

thanks

Posted by tomchadwin
Thanks for this thread. 400 bitrate for video certainly doesn't really work for me. 350 leads to some synch problems, but probably I can live with that, so I'm sticking with 350 video, 32x2 audio.

I was using Recode CE, but the codec expired. I've downloaded the trial of Nero 7, and Recode is different. If I choose Memory stick video (PSP), I can only get the audio at 24k. What are other people using? I'm trying iPod video, and it seems OK. My crop settings also don't seem to be quite right, as I'm ending up with some black bars top and bottom.

Also, I read on HowardForums that you can playlist video, but I'm not having any joy with that on the K800. Anyone managed it? It would help a lot for long videos.

Cheers

Tom

Does FPS make any difference?

Can I use the "proper" rate of 25 or 30FPS, or do I need to drop it to 15FPS?

Posted by mephisto2k
Sorry guys, any chance we can have full info for settings:

Video:
Bitrate
FPS

Audio:
KBPS
Sample Rate

So is a video more likely to get out of sync with the audio the longer the video is? I don't mean does it get more out of sync the further into the file you go, but, for instance, if there is a complex scene at the beginning, is it more likely to lose sync at that point if the whole video is longer?

I am trying to encode a load of 40-minute episodes, and the lag after the busy title sequence seems worse when I did the whole episode than when I just did a test encode of the first 5 minutes.

Also, I asked before about video playlists on the K800. Are they possible?

Thanks

Tom

If encoded properly AV should always be in sync I’ve encoded full movies and they have been good quality and play back very smoothly

No. I'm not posting any videos. I'm trying to convert legal copyrighted material for my own use.

Obviously. What I am after is settings for encoding. Lots of people talk of 400k video, but even 300k sometimes lags for me with 64k audio.

Out of interest, since Nero 7 costs something like $70, while the Nero Digital codec costs only about $30, would I be missing out on much if I continued using Recode CE and simply bought the codec, rather than buying the full application?

Cheers

Ok
So has it been worked out what the best settings to use are and what program is best to use?

I downloaded Super (C) converter and encoded a file but i dont know where it encoded it too. anyone know where the default would be? or how i can change it.
Thanks

Yes, youd be missing out on the tons of other great features included in the full Nero 7 premium, aswell as free updates. I highly recommend getting the full package. There are lots of goodies.

Yes, i sometimes get those large block appear for a second or two.
Obviously i need to change the settings slightly.
Do i have the frame rate too slow (25 fps) or a too high bit rate (334).

I use 330 and 48 for sound and am very pleased but il try higher.

Im using Mpegable.

Could anyone help me out. I need the Xilisoft DVD ripper. Does anyone have the full version.

Posted by RyaN
@bavlondon2, 48 for sound is pretty poor... try a bit higher and see what its like.

Im gonna try some encodes out later, and do a bit of experimenting. As someone else suggested here, im gonna try out pspvideo9 as its already set up for 1-click encoding with 320*240 resolution and with various other framerate/bitrate options

Posted by rockygali
wow ryan, hows your K800 with regards to encoded vids... the screen is alot bigger now... im waitin for the perfect encoded vids...

buenas suerte!

Posted by jj03
Why wait for someone else to encode the "perfect video"..it's not a miracle when somebody encode's good quality video...lol. try it yourself..there's a multitude of diff program's that can produce good result's..imtoo, super, nero recode...it really isn't that hard...

Posted by RyaN
Maybe he was just looking forward to my contribution? i think he knows how to convert stuff himself using nero recode as he's done so before on a number of occasions, so im sure rockgali was just merely stating his appreciation in advance

Posted by jj03
more than likely...i found that psp video9 does a pretty good job of converting, tho, super is pretty damn good too.

Posted by RyaN
yeah, pspvideo9 isnt too bad actually. only prob is id like to get the framerates between 15 and 29.97, not either or.. Might have a look at that Super application, or try the trusty MpegableX4live.

I know its prob been asked a milliontrillion times before, but where can i get this Super app from, and is it freeware?

thanks

Posted by jj03
super is entirely freeware..and you can get it here...

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

get the latest build.

Posted by jj03
I tried using super yesterday for the first time, and it initially gave me some issue's with regard's to sound..

i encoded dumb and dumber at 250 for video, and 96 for sound...but when encoded, it gave me no sound at all..the file i was encoding from (dumb and dumber) was in avi...so i assumed it uses the mpeg4 container...tried again, and still no sound...but i am just reading the super guide which is on their site..seems pretty good...

Posted by RyaN
quality mate, cheers for that

Also i learned yesterday that i actually CAN ffwd videos on the K800, after i believed that it couldnt do it like my W800 could. If anyone didnt know, go into your vid player via the 'entertainment' menu. soz if this is old news!

Posted by below24
Try calcuim converter also, i know it doesnt have your 15FPS but its pretty good and quick too...

Download

Posted by jj03
No probs ryan. The fast forward thing was one of the first things i went for when i had my k800 fully charged...glad it's exactly the same as on the k750i..also appreciate the "take picture" option too...it's one of the small attention to detail's the se paid, that brought me back to SE after 6 years.

Posted by jj03
hmmm..super's just given me something amazing...a full film (dumb n dumber 1 hour 47 minutes long) in good quality, having just watched 20 minutes of it, at the amazing size of 16 meg...wtf????!!!...encode was 320x240..video bitrate 240. sound 96..no 2nd pass...weird..really weird...

Posted by RyaN
16mb for a 1 3/4hr film how the f**k did it manage that! or did you mean 16mb for 20mins? even for the latter, thats pretty good going...

Posted by jj03
No...16 meg for an 1 hr 47 min video!! christ..ain't got a clue what i did to warrant that...just recoding the same film with a higher bitrate for both video and audio...note...on the interface, it went straight through encoding and ghive an output status...so it appeared as if it were finished so to speak...but..if you go to program files/super/output files it still shows as encoding because the file size is getting bigger as i speak...now thats weird.lol

Posted by tomchadwin
Just a detail about fast-forwarding. It is now usable on the K800, because it speeds up after a second or two. Only takes 5 seconds or so to FF 20 minutes, not like puncturing your thumb on the K750 from holding down the joystick to FF to where I got to last time. FF is also reliable in full-screen - the K750 would crash most times when you tried that (or am I misremembering, and you just couldn't do it at all?).

Main thing I'm annoyed about is that I don't think you can do video playlists. Can anyone else confirm/deny?

Cheers

Tom

Posted by jj03
well, regarding fastforwarding on the k750i, it did it fine, but took it's time when going to any particular length..not that it was an issue as such...

Posted by tomchadwin
It certainly was an issue for me...
