Hi

I've just got myself a K800 and would like to be able to use the e-mail option (sending and receiving etc) using my Yahoo or Windows Live Mail account but am having problems after having the details sent to my phone.

I have been on the website and followed the instructions to get the settings sent to my phone, yet when i try to send an e-mail it states that the username and/or password is invalid. I tried it for two separate e-mail accounts but got the same error message.

Could anyone point me in the right direction on what i need to do next or how i do the setup manually?

ps: I did a quick search before i posted but couldn't find a direct answer to what i was looking for (although im sure its out there, there are quite alot of posts )

Thanx peeps

mate, go to sonyericsson's website...go to support...then click on email. it'll ask you to select model, country, network, then select provider...i'm on o2, so i selected o2. then it'll ask you to select a incoming email server..scroll down the list and select. then enter you username, followed by your password etc...then, finally, enter your mobile number..and send. settings arrive, install..and your done...

Nice and easy

Yeh that's what i did which is why im pretty puzzled as to why its come up with the username/password incorrect error.

I have tried it a few times since and still get the same error which would lead you to beleive that im doing something wrong, but i don't see how i could be. I've definately got my username etc correct when inputting it.

Thanks for the reponse though guys. I will figure this thing out one day lol

skinbop,

There are a number of us having exactly the same issue as yourself. I've sent an email to 02 data support asking if they have any ideas. I tried calling, but when I wasn't being put on hold, I was being put through to the wrong department. I was eventually given a direct dial number for the data support team, but the number didn't work!

Of course I'll post as soon as (if) I get a response.

I too am finding this strange. I have plenty of experience setting the mail accounts for SE phones manually or over the air from SE, Orange or O2. No matter what I try, I cannot seem to get it to work. I would be interested to hear from those that have no connection issues what their software config details are - K800i on O2 (3G Sim not activated) - Software version CXC1250210 R1CB001; 060608 Sony Ericsson

whats the incoming email server if i want to use hotmail???

Posted by goldenface
Only some email providers will allow email to be picked up from your mobile. On most you have to have a Premium email account and not the basic one.

I would check with your email provider first, if I was you.

e.g. I found out that O2 don't allow basic email to be picked up on their PAYG handsets.

Although, O2 will allow upgraded email to be sent to contract phones.

Check with your provider.

Thanks for the reponse guys - i'll check with my provider.

I am also unable to send e-mails from my k800 - receiving them no problem. In esttingsunder advanced settings, the outgoing username and password are both blank. Is that how it should be?

From a post by altemyr in the 'technical' forum

It's definitely an operator dependant problem. The email client in the K800 seems to send username and password to the SMTP server regardless of whether there is a username and password filled in or not, and there is no way of telling the client not to send username and password. The smtp server I'm told to connect to, does not want the user validation and obviously, its response is interpreted by the K800 as "Invalid username or password".
A workaround is to choose another email provider, I found one which is free of charge and who has an SMTP server that does require user validation, and using that server, I can send emails with the K800. The only problem with that server is that it's very slow, it can take up to 24 hours for an email to reach its recipient.

I have emailed both SE and 02 about this issue but haven't yet had a response from either...

I'm not sure it's an operator issue, I think more of a handset issue. Mine was working perfectly until I changed handset. No change to mobile provider or ISP.

Some o2 brande handset's may not allow email, but most handset's from other place's as cpw provide generic model's..all the phones ive had from o2 (cpw etc) have been easy for email..

02 data support eventually responded to my email, but simply attached the general email settings that we're all fully aware of. I've replied explaining that my phone already has these settings and I've attached altemyr's suggestion as to what the problem is.

I'm from Sweden and use K800 and using network Telia. I have
got the installation from their home page and I use incoming email
as gmail.com och MUST use outgoing Telia's own.

Incoming email woks OK but I have the problem with receiving. It will talk about something TLS/SSL problem even if I not use that in outgoing.
(Note incoming gmail use SSL)

But can you send mail true gmail is you have telias smpt server?
I got telenor from sweden and i can recive mails but cant send any..

I find Gmail very unreliable on the K800i. Sometimes i'm able to send, other times i can't. Receiving is no problem though.

How can i get hotmail to work?

I know i could just do it from the wap, but i want to set it up so all i have to do is press 'e-mail' and up pops my hotmail.

Thanks

Posted by masseur
I'm fairly sure hotmail still don't have a pop3 server, not even the paid service last time I looked, and SE phones don't support HTTP mail, so the only alternative is to use a 3rd party service that bridges this connection, if you trust giving your hotmail account details to them that is...

Perhaps a solution for the problem with outgoing POP/IMAP already has been posted (the "invalid username or password" response)?
I finally got it to work...

The problem seems to be DNS related. When using IP-address instead of DNS name for the outgoing server it works fine for me.
You don´t need to set any user+pwd under advanced settings either (the outgoing username and password both blank).
For those in Sweden using telia.com as E-mail provider the outgoing POP/IMAP server (mailout.telia.com) has the IP-address 81.228.11.34. Try this and it works - at least it did for me!

Don't forget that when you enter your username on the site that this is just the first half of you email address.

I had the settings sent to my phone today and it works fine - well almost.

hi all

to get this to work iyyou need to set up your email as you would usually do. then go to www.o2.co.uk and open up a free o2 email account.
go into your email account on phone and at the bottom of the list of settings for your new email account go into advanced. in there you will find a user name and password section. just put in your email accout name from o2, and then put the password of your o2 email account in password, save and come out and you can send mail from any isp provider. simple wasnt it. 5 days of changing every setting on the phone but i got there. good luck all

I can't see anywhere that lets me sign up for an email account????

All I can find is some blurb about access O2 mail via O2 Active - but this isn't using the inbuilt email client, this is equivalent to viewing email via a wap page...that's not what I want.

Do you have a direct link???

Cheers

hi
you go online with a standard computer and set up an o2 email account. you never have to access it again. Use the password and user name of the online email account in your phone. go to email - advanced - user name ( fill in) you go to password - ( fill in) and come out. You do not access o2 to send and recieve your mail. The only reason for having it is to give your phone the user name and password that it keeps throwing back when your sending outgoing mail. Your mail goes through your own isp so if your with NTLWORLD then it recieves and sends through ntlworld. using the email client on the phone, not a wap browser.
I hope that is clearer. The user name and password stops silly message on outgoing mail on the email client of the phone saying incorrect user name or password

this is the link for setting up an email account with o2

sorry I got sidetracked.. hope that allows you to get it sorted

It doesn't sound like the issue here is with the O2-specific part (the data account). Things to try:

1. Double check that your encryption settings match your port numbers. The phone changes port numbers automatically when you switch encryption settings, but sometimes it gets it wrong.

No encryption / TLS:
POP: 110
IMAP: 143
SMTP: 25 or 587 (depending on mail provider)

SSL:
POP: 995
IMAP: 993
SMTP: 465

2. If you get errors about unknown or untrusted certificates, you need to install the correct certificates in your phone. How do you find the correct certs? Well, we can help you with that but you need to tell us the name of the server you are using.

3. If you have a K800i, make sure you input your username/password also under "Advanced", if your SMTP server requires authentication - for instance with gmail.

4. Different outgoing/incoming servers / cannot send mail. There is a known problem in K800i that in some cases makes it impossible to send mail if you use your mobile operators SMTP server. If you suspect this (you get wrong username/password errors even though you double checked), you should either a) upgrade your software or b) use the SMTP server of your email provider instead. Again, give more detailed info (including server name) if you need help for a specific email provider.

Don't give up! Email on your phone leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to ease of setup, but in most cases it is possible to make it work.

hi, i'm new to this forum and it looks pretty helpful to be honest but i'm still struggling with the bloody email.
i tried this ages ago and still i can't get it to work. I've given up on 02 cos they're a waste of space. can anybody tell me exactly what their settings are on email settings so i can try and find the problem. I've never had so much bother with a bl00dy phone. thanks in advance. also, just realised i could've clicked the "quote" button to get the above bit in my post. nevermind, i'll know for next time. ha ha

Hi all

Just got this to work from Orange K800 connecting to yahoo.co.uk account.

In the email settings you need to put the yahoo address (smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk) as the outgoing server, and in advanced settings use port 587 in the outgoing port option.

Just tested - and seems to work fine - no incorrect username/password message.

Okay, i'm a newb to this forum but i recieved a k800i yesterday and like a lot of other people in many forums (google found lots!) was struggling with the email, but i got it working, and since i read this one i'm gonna reply here too, hopefully this can help someone out as the combination of about five forums helped me out.

Account settings:
Account name:
O2 UK

Email Alert:
blah

Connect Using:
O2 Mobileweb (Also works on O2 WAP GPRS)

Email Address:
blah@o2.co.uk

Connection Type:
Pop3

Incoming Server:
mail.o2.co.uk

Username: (same as above email address!!!)
blah@o2.co.uk

Password:
*******

Outgoing server:
smtp.o2.co.uk

------------------------------
Advanced Settings:

Your Name:
[BLANK]

Signature:
[BLANK]

Download S&R:
Up to size limit

Check Interval:
Off

Push Email:
[BLANKED OUT]

Allow Connection:
Home Network

Copy Outgoing:
Off

Encryption:
No encryption

Outgoing Username:
[BLANK]

Outgoing Password:
[BLANK]

Incoming Port:

So thats my lot, thanks for the help, i've posted this a couple of others forums, simply as people want the whole settings to get a basis of what they are doing right or wrong! Hope this helps. Note that the advanced the username/password are blank, and that the username in the main settings is your whole account email address, not at all just your account name!
cheers

as far as i'm aware, you can't have hotmail on the K800I as hotmail don't have a POP3 server or something. I have read in many places that it's not possible for one reason or another.

oh right, thanks Mark. Thats kinda crap though

I have a K800i and use an email service that configured my phone over the air for me with a configuration sms - it works perfectly using my own exisitng email address - I have not experienced the issue described with outgoing messages. I can't remeber the website I signed up at but if anyone is interested I could dig it out.

i've setup my k800 for gmail.. but can't seem to download the attachment in the email.. is there a way to do this?

Posted by masseur
I don't have a K800 any more but there is a setting somewhere in there that defines whether you just want headers, or how much of the message you will allow to be downloaded and that will affect attachments too

Posted by baste07
i've set it to full... and still can't find the attachement

Im on Telenor here in Sweden and had the same problem. I could only receive mail and not send them!!

I have given up this quest in favour of a new mail system completely - Momail!! Not only does it resize your mails/attachments its also push!! No more connecting to get mail - total freedom

Visit my post on how to configure Yahoo! Mail IMAP using the default email client of your phone. I also have Sony Ericsson K800i. Try to configure it manually. Mine works both on sending and receiving.

some people here said K800 requires authentication on outgoing mail. I can't remember that being the case, but if it is use the mail server address of your mobile service provider. For example I'm with optus, and used mail.optusnet.com.au for outgoing mail server address. You can still have your incoming mail provider for incoming mail server address for example mail.yourdomain.com.

It works on my K800
