South Africa's 2010 Cup challenge
A ceremony is being held in Germany to officially hand over the World Cup to South Africa, which in 2010 will become the first African country to host the championship. The BBC's Mohammed Allie looks at what needs to be done.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/5141582.stm
2010 World Cup Budget:
5bn rand for stadiums
3.5bn rand other capital investment
5.2bn rand for upgrading airports
3.5bn rand for better roads and railways
(7 rand = $1)
Do you think South Africa will be ready to stage the 2010 World Cup?

Well i lived there for 2 years i used to live in Johannesburg, i think they will finish the projects till 2010, they are very organized. =)
Posted by Xugaa
Yeah I think they will too, unfortunately there seem to be a lot of unsure minds out there who just don't think South Africa will be ready in time.

Get in there S. Africa!
I'm leaving for there on Friday...can't wait

yeah im goign to 2010 world cup!! also are there staduims any good?size?!!
cause if i remember rightly they were meant to do the o;ympics in 2004 but it was gaven to Greece!
Posted by Xugaa
Apparently they've got to do a lot of work, on roads, stadiums, transport etc, they even have to (I think) not only upgrade stadiums but build a few too. This is why some people are a bit concerned to whether they will be ready in time.
Posted by luigithfc
thtas what i thougth as well they might lose out again!
also does the nation holding the world cup in thier country get automatic qualification or not?
Posted by jmash
You guys seem to be concerned about something you know nothing of.We have already started with the preparations and if it's money you think we don't have to do the job, well consider yourselves wrong. And l think the only reason you doubt us is because we are in Africa.Don't think for a second that other countries are better than us.Believe South Africa can do the job just like Germany did it.So relax and start worring about stuff that really matters.
Posted by fatreg
yeah KSA automatically qualify...

O whats the point of this thread Mr Leeboy?
What makes you say we wont be ready?
Posted by leeboy13
its called a discussion and by the heading id say its to talk about general things to do with teh world cup in S africa 2010...... now ive spelt that out should i go on to explain that people only say may/ may not be ready because teh sheer volume of worked need to be done to make it work.... it is do-able and i personally have no doublt in my mind that they will do it... nothing to do with being 'a third world country' as YOU put it..... lol.. dont you see the only two peopel so far in theis thread to put S africa down is yourself and the otehr guy/girl about 4 posts above...
As i have stated.. i cannot see any reason for you replies......
i think its great news S africa got it..... i myself have always wanted to visit.... and from what i hear, there are very wealthy people in S Africa so my view of the nation is far from being 'third world'.....

Just out of interest, where is Euro 2008 being held?
Cheers
Posted by JK
Ok ok, well im not sure if you know, but its been discussed since last year when it was announced that we were gonna host it.
I guess it was one of those debates that brought up the 3rd world country thing.
I just think that outsiders are the only people questioning whether we'll be ready or not.
Id like to think we will be!!
Posted by leeboy13
google dude
'The 2008 European Football Championship will take place in Austria and Switzerland, from 7 June to 29 June 2008. '

As long as SA do not employ the company tasked with building Wembley stadium, they should be on time in building all the required stadiums.

One of our SP's just gave 46 million pounds towards the 2010 world cup!

and switzerland!!
SP thats quite good and alot money to mordernise the satduims etc....

look i know that south africa, is a country in africa - and im not overly sure what the country is like really...but i know it has its bad parts and also its good parts - i expect it to be ready for the 2010 world cup
im sure the same speculation was put on germany, 4 years ago when they had to start work. i dont know, but i think people may think there is corruptness or something in the south african goverment which may lead to the money going else-where rather than to the world cup

If Portugal was able to get Euro2004 going i'm sure any other country can do it too.
Besides... you have elefants to help build things don't you?

Although its for racing and not footy, this stadium blows wembly out of teh water....... 200,000 capacity....
http://www.worldstadiums.com/[....]a/china/shanghai_circuit.shtml
an who said S africa werent ready..... 90,000 capacity tadium and a lil research shows they have a fair few stadiums......
http://www.worldstadiums.com/[....]gauteng/johannesburg_fnb.shtml
personally i feel wembley is a utter dissapointment - i fear it will suffer a simular fate to the millenium dome - but will that be turned iinto a super casino
Sorry if that offends anyone, but that my opinion on the matter
Posted by Xugaa
Yeah cool. Though it has already been said that Wembley when finished will be the most expensive and best sporting arena anywhere in the world. Don't know about the capacity but obviously size wise (area taken up) it won't be, a football pitch and a racing track...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/sport/wembley/index.shtml
http://www.wembleystadium.com/
Wembley Facts...
*The new Wembley is expected to cost a staggering £750m, making it the most expensive sporting arena in the world.
*The new stadium in north London is due to open in 2006.
*There will be a removable running track, cutting the capacity to 68,400 for staging athletics.
*It will seat 90,000 and will have a 'triumphant arch' to replace the Twin Towers.
*Leg room is greatly increased and now measures more than was given in the Royal Box in the old stadium.

i had no idea this was replacing teh twin towers.......
Xugua i dont mean to rip it apart dude, but wembley is one of teh biggest jokes ive ever seen..... and 7 years after teh planning application it still aint finished... im asshamed to call it 'the best there is'
and one last thing, anyway, why on earth would the uk want to replace an american building?
also Daniel Libeskind will be pissed to hear that his freedom tower aint replacing the twin towers

By 'best' I meant that it will be the most up-to-date and advanced sports arena. Costing £750m obviously does not indicate how good it is but does show that it will be the most expensive sports arena in the world. Yeah it has taken a long time to be completed, but maybe thats just a sign of how impressive the finished stadium will be.
Posted by luigithfc
i agree xugga!
Posted by leeboy13
why is it so expensive tho chaps? just some food for thought...... and aint any of you slightly annoyed that its so far behind schedule....... (and in way does the fact its running late make it better
Posted by Xugaa
Nope I'm not worried...
Its like the PS3, unlike some people I'm not bothered about any delays or the release date, as long as they get it out bug free and to the best it can be. Its like Wembley for me also.
Posted by awave
i think its annoying though.....i'd rather it be finished - waste of tax payers money unlike ps3

Ok...
So, from World Cup 2010 to New Wembley to PS3...
