K800 Firmware Overview

SE stated that they are working with Acura to fix the bluetooth incompatibility in acura cars. It worked 2 firmwares or so ago for most SE phones but they broke it. Does this firmware work better with acuras I wonder?

I like it too, with date (and optional alarm) on overlaying the large clock.

A lot of people seem to be uncertain about what Wotanserver and DaVinciteam are, and their relation with SE and SEUS. I am no expert but I think I can clarify a few things so that those who wonder will not need to write yet another post asking if Wotan == SEUS and when the FW will be available on SEUS.

I may be wrong, so please correct me if I write something here that is not true. This is what I think is correct.

- Nobody here can tell you when the new firmware will be available on Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS), whether you try to update using your computer or the built in update service in the phone (disabled by branding in some phones).

- Wotanserver and Davinciteam get the firmware files from Sony Ericsson, probably claiming to be, or actually being, service centers, and they probably have to pay for access to these files (which I guess is one reason for them to charge us for getting the update through them). I do not think that the firmware available through WS and DVT are hacked or altered, but the program used for installing the firmware can sometimes change some settings for those who want that.

- The major reason for paying money to WS or DVT to get new firmware is actually to unbrand the phone, get rid of operator branding, operator specific icons and shortcuts, disabled menus and options, etc. One other reason that is obvoius to many now is that they can give you the newest FW before it is available through SEUS.

- Upgrading the FW using WS or DVT will not unlock the phone, if it is locked to one operator, it will still be after upgrading the FW. You can also choose to install other localization, in order to get other languages in the phone, for menus and texting.

- Changing firmware through WS/DVT may or may not void your warranty, I am not fully certain. If you do not know what you are doing, or if you do not follow instructions closely, you may end up with an unusable phone, and then you will have to pay a local SE service center to (try) to fix it. If you use the official SEUS you should have no problem with warranty, and if you "brick" your phone using the official tools, I am sure SE will fix it for you for free.

So, please no more posts asking when the FW will be available on SEUS. Nobody knows, and when it is avaliable you will surely see it here first. Just keep an eye on this thread.

Very well spoken and I totally agree with you, furthermore I'd like to fill in that warranty of a branded phone gets void when you debrand it through WS or DVT,since SEUS does not provide such capability because that would go against the trade agreements with several operators, after all they manufacture the branded editions too.

so when is the update cuming on seus........only joking. anyway to wat i was going to say. wudnt wotan and davici get in trouble for releasing b4 se?

Posted by masseur
well, I paid for my wotan credit 16 hours ago and still have not received my "instant account" nor any reply from my email about this

if wotan is easier to use than davinci, as was posted here yesterday, I'm yet to see that!

Posted by sapporobaby
@Masseur

Not good Masseur. You just convinced me not to use WOTAN.

@sis...

Didn't you read the post by Jasond and myself. They purchase access to the SE servers. Why would they get in trouble for purchasing access and then selling that access?

I debranded my phone a while ago, but had no trouble with my credits then, only trouble was being nervous about the procedure.

I am under the impression that Wotan is handled by a single guy, and he may not be checking his mail every minute. Guess he has a day job too... You will no doubt get your credit and be able to reflash your phone, and you would normally get your creds right away. If there is trouble he will solve it, he is very helpful, but it seems that some customers have bad luck, and sometimes it can take some hours to take care of the problems.

Posted by masseur
fair enough, I'm not stressing over it. I just wanted to try the service for curiosity more than anything

Posted by xan K
When I paid for my credit on Wotanserver I got it almost instantly in an email, like it was some kind of automated reply. why is wotan messing up now?

Posted by jadler
Addition to my previous post:

- After upgrading firmware through e.g. Wotan, you will be able to do future upgrades through SEUS. You will have generic firmware with no restrictions regarding upgrades. You will lose any operator specific certificates, which might make it impossible for you to download software from your operator.

Posted by ghostfreak
I got my credit within about 2 minutes.

Hey jadler,

is it worth paying for or worth the wait? The cash is not a problem, however I tend to not throw money away. As one who has used it, I will consider your opinion strongly.

Thanks

I have had experience with DaVinci, when I was flashing my K750i to a W800i firmware. Once you pay with paypal, or any other online means, they have an automated system (I believe) which sends you your credit through to you instantly via. email. The flash process and client are also very easy to use.

As for Wotan, I haven't tried them yet, but I'll give them a go once a K790i F/W release is out.

so anyone got any clue when its out on seus

That a fact? Once I upgrade via Wotan I can then go onto say SEUS when another upgrade comes along and just update it?

hey im not asking if the new update for the k800 is out on seus but all im going to ask is if some one does up date the firmware with the seus could they shout it out on here asap. thnx

When you are sending a text message and you have to select a number, was there a 'mark several' option on your right soft-key in earlier firmware versions?

Posted by [c3]
nop, there isnt, why did they implement that in the new fw?

Posted by drich290195
Another new thing with the new firmware, wghen you plug the pc cable in you get options on the phone of file transfer, phone Mode and now a PRINT mode

To make it easier to send a message to several people

I also find the phone to be quicker in sending txts, deleting them, opening folders, and navigating the menu.

I take it all back. this was MY mistake.

I set my paypal account to a different address when trading on Esato and it was still set to that address and I forgot.

My account was created immediately after all so humle appologies to Wotanserver and embarrasment to me!

now to give it a whirl and get my big standby clock!

Posted by masseur
ok, update done to R1ED001 generic EUROPE_2 (changed from generic HONG_KONG)

everything from the first post changes for this version checks out except my big clock is NOT positioned above the date, its where it was previously

what I notice now, which isn't mentioned there, is that all my WMA tracks are now listed correctly by artists and title (rathre than unknown). These are all on memory stick so I have done nothing except update the firmware

Unfortunately the track titles still do not show on the DS970 headset

Posted by Phantasm4489
One good reason to wait for seus (although saying that I have unbranded my phone using wotan and i definately recommend it for that purpose) is that flashing with davinci or wotan etc completely wipes your phone and you have to configure it again from scratch.

Thats why I dont immediately go and update to the latest version that gets released on wotan or davinci straight away

Posted by aremaboy
Is there a possibility that just like R1CF001, this R1ED001 is never released on SEUS? I think SEUS will only upload one final update as this K800i is a perfect f/w project...maybe next year? I just can't use WS, DVT nor TMS as we have no dollars or PayPal or else here...well, just enjoy my R1CB001 then.

I've read on another (german) forum, that in the new firmware the text message emotion animations (the little blue buddies) are changed to another more colored ones...

Could somebody verify it, and if so post a picture about it?

Thanx

Strange. Can anyone else confirm where their Big clock is on the new firmware?

I'll add this to the first post.

Once again we have varying reports, although I am tempted to believe Masseur over others. I'll leave this entry off the first post for the time being.
Can anyone else with the new firmware and an HBH-DS970 headset confirm whether the tracks appear and also what format the songs are (MP3, MP4, WMA)

Mike

they reverted to the old animations? i hope so. i liked those guys better.

@ senninha & farkasg

Someone say this is true! I hate the new blue sock puppet like animations, if the new firmware reverts back to the more colourful ones I'll be happy!

(easily pleased me!)

right, well, itdefinitely didn't work find time I tried it immediately after flashing but following this comment I decided to power off the phone and the headset and then power back on and now I am seeing titles in the headset.

I can't explain it but several power off/on still give a working result

@nick111, yep, thats where my clock is too

Posted by drich290195
My clock is not positioned above the date neither

This message was posted from a K800i

Hey MWarner,

I can confirm that the music titles are there for sure. I updated my k800i via Wotan and now I can see the titles. See attached photo. Linkin Park: In the End.

The text message animations are totally different now, very like the k750i guys but more refined.

I really like the new mms editor as well

A question for anybody who owned SE phone before capable of SEUS:

Is it possible, that wotan server is a kind of sandbox, and SE waits for user feedbacks, and if everything seems ok with the firmware they put it on SEUS?

How was it before with other phones?

Posted by xpander
Just updated my K800i to R1ED001 via Wotanserver and have played around with it in the past few minutes. And yes, animations for SMS have changed. They're like the old colour ones from previous SE phones, but much more refined.

Other than that, the only difference is the Print option when you connect the DCU-60 cable. Well that's all I've noticed so far.

Posted by adriandaz
What is the new R1ED firmware? Is it a new branded or unbranded release?

thanks,

Posted by xpander
@adriandaz

It's unbranded - so no network specific icons like Vodafone, Orange etc.

well the O2 f/w is the same as unbranded, so O2 customers should be able to get it?

Not at all. They release all official firmware versions, both branded and unbranded on SEUS. Your IMEI-number tells SEUS what firmware you are allowed to download.

Posted by O2 K800i
OOPS - fw R1BC - can no longer access the games or applications folders on the phone although the memory status says they each have about 850Kb with 0 files. Had phone from 1st week of release (2 months).

O2 sending a replacement so will see what fw this comes with. This is a genuine fault with handset which seemingly has corrupted some of its memory. Tried a reset then a full master reset before giving up.

One idea I did have but cannot check - is this due to not having the M2 card fitted anymore? (I sold it on ebay cause I didnt use it). Someone could try removing M2 card then see if you get into the games or apps folders? PS - games and apps cannot be seen from PC.

lol

Posted by sapporobaby
All of this speculation is not going to change the fact that SE has not released it. Options remain the same. Pay for it or wait for it (if it ever comes).

The only thing missing is the grassy knoll conspiracy. SE has NEVER been constrained by time or the whims and wishes of users when it comes to the release of an upgrade. They release when it is ready. As for Wotan, they are just a money making enterprise so they have nothing to do with or when SE releases the software.

O2 K800i:

I had the same problem after a full master reset, the games and apps folder was empty (not even the pre-programmed ones), but the size was not 0 Kb.

I've solved by connecting to PC and make two new folders with same name that the orginal (Games ...), after that it worked normally.

After upgrading to R1ED using Wotan, I'm happy to see that the issues that annoyed me seems to be fixed;

1) Had Bluetooth problems with my "Wayfinder" bluetooth GPS receiver. The K800 and GPS receiver always lost contact after 5-10 minutes of operation. This seems to be fixed somehow, and "Wayfinder" program works flawlessly with the K800.

2) A few issues using the HBH-DS970 seems to be fixed. It is much more stable now and also shows MP3 IDtags on the handsfree display. The only thing that still is annoying is that sound and picture is still a bit "unsynced" when playing streamed content and watching mp4 movies with sound through HBH-DS970.

Overall this fw seems more stable, but this is a most subjective opinion.

I agree - I then had two new folders AND the old games and apps folders. No games or apps available not could I access the folders on the menus. Thanks for your advice.

@MWarner - guess this is not the first time this has happened and from the O2 operator's reaction - an automatic replacement was ordered.
