K800 Firmware Overview

Great post Blunden and right on the mark. Creating software to run today's new phones is not easy, and will result in bugs. The difference is that some people do nothing but look for bugs and then complain about them or they try the same procedure over and over until a bug appears and then complain about it.

This phone is slowly annoying the hell out of me.

I cant send text messages now. One will get through and the rest just say failed.

So to answer the above question.

I can make calls. I can take photos. But i'll be f**ked if i can send text messages.

It is probably not your phone. It is your network provider.

seriously... these last posts is making me laugh... if only you guys were seen on TV.. you prolly replace three stooges... dont get me wrong but the discussion is a reality indeed...

people whine with small bugs... and make a big thing out of it... and tells the whole world how bad the product is... BAD! very bad! its very UNFAIR!

someone sez that as long as you can make calls, send an SMS, retrieve them properly, then your phone is functioning, which is true... then these camera, FM radio, media player are just but add ons to that device.... which make it more versatile in some point... well as long as you can use these features properly its quite good then.. right?

but whats best is... even these extra features crack up sumtimes... throws you tantrums... hey! does your PC dont throw tantrums at you sometime? its just but normal for devices such as these... as ive said whats the best part is that you can wait for the company to release updates for these later known minor shmoes in order for you not to throw tantrums at them. And you can do these things at the comfort of your own home. youll never have to drive miles away to the nearest service center.

so minus the hanky panky.... GUYS! have done everything to satisfy their customers for the past year... dont yak! just wait!

so for conversation's sake! if you really had enuff of your K800. REPLACE IT! if itll bring comfort in your heart! for cryin out loud get a replacement! not another phone please! so that you will not end up yaking back at this forum! sheeesh!

chris (even though that's my name, haha) - Don't mention horse manure about getting a life. We all have one. That stuff has nothing to do with the phone... no offense, though.

I can make calls and do whatever - it's just what I paid for. Five bills for something like this with my call log screwing around isn't what I want.

For those who can live with the bugs - you can just ignore us ranters. You're happy, so just don't pay attention. I'm just slightly unsatisfied with an expensive product.

Anyway, these bugs don't really bother me... I'm just dissapointed at SE for this amount of bugs - which I was trying to say from the last post.

Let's just hope for an update soon.

Edit: Compared my friend's K750i to my K790i today... realized how much big of a diff the K790i is... I've learned to appreciate the upgrade a bit more... haha.

Take a deep breath, my friend, your retaliation to such feedback, however true, is becoming equally distracting.
Advising people to 'get some fresh air' will perhaps do very little in remedying whatever perceived situation there may be.

@obentou, kalleboo
Thanks heaps for pointing out the knack to storing ringtones on the phone's memory! I was so frustrated that I couldn't find an easy work-around, but you've both helped me immensely. It is a shame that we can't apply this same technique to the read-only 'Greeting' file, as it still shuffles (on my firmware at least), but a vast improvement!

Out of interest - Another minor bug find for verification, and to possibly be added to the list if considered worthy:

When editing a contact, scrolling between name and various numbers affects the positioning of the icons beside the information (they shift up and down, oddly). This could never inconvenience anyone, but I reckon if I were responsible for improving firmware's, it's one of those things that I'd like to hear about.

Another handy feature I just found out:
When setting a new theme, the phone thinks to ask you if you would like to retain the custom wallpaper or not. Thoughtful!

Hey I also have a Q... although not firmware related.

For you people who wear jeans, does putting the K790i / K800 minus a case let dust into the joystick and screen? Anyone experience dust seeping in so far? Thanks.

Posted by jasond
I find the joystick gets very dusty easily. Easily cleaned, mind you. Unsure of any performance drawbacks.

My screen has very very minor bits of dust towards the edges. 3 weeks old and a taste of things to come no doubt.

I'd rather use the phone how it's meant to be used, attract a bit of dust, rather than hide it in some kind of case were the beauty of the design is never truly seen.

Posted by sapporobaby
For the love of all that is electronic, do not keep it in your pants pocket. It is a dust under the screen generator.

R1EB004 is coming out next week. The changelog is about 40 pages long.

Of course you can verify this and provide details. Not saying that you are not honest, but a more convincing post would include info, don't you think?

Posted by mroach
I can't copy and paste the whole changelog, but of the Esato list of bugs, these are fixed:

- Chinese firmware only - Changing the settings to display a large clock (Settings / Display / Clock Size / Large) causes an extremely small clock to be displayed when using a 24 hour clock. The clock displays correctly when using the 12 hour am/pm time format.
- Selecting 'Settings / Calls / Manage Calls / Accept Calls / Only from list' only blocks those calls whose number is present in the phonebook. All unknown numbers are automatically accepted.
- Key sounds, if enabled, can fail after a period of time (possibly after an alarm has gone off)
- Cannot send emails to some SMTP servers which don't require validation (it appears that the email client tries to send blank login records to the server)

Do you do anything other than whine and lament about your phone? If it is so terrible, take it back. WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT HERE WAITING. Man you sound like a very immature individual. Get over it dude.

I am not trying to pick a fight with you but can you give the constant negativity a rest. Trust me I will there right along side of you if this is not resolved in a few weeks time, but I would rather have a bug free patch than a dodgy one. Let SE get it fixed right the first time.

Dude, as I said, I am not trying to pick a fight with you but if you go back and look at most of your posts, as well as a few othesr, they comprise a complaint-fest. Mwarner was nice enough to start this thread which started out with bugs and issues and turned into a complaint burial ground with you and a select group of others doing most of the complaining. And yes, I and a few others have expressed how annoying it is getting. Like I also stated, there is nothing you, nor me, nor anyone can do to make SE hurry up and post an update to repair the outstanding bugs. The key difference is that not every post we tend to post is aimed at expressing our displeasure. If having the k800i is really that big a hassle and disappointment, why don't you take it back, save yourself some heart ache and the rest of us from hearing how "disappointed" you are. You act like your k800i is the only one going through these growing pains. We are all in the same boat.

How about this, complain away. I will not comment again. I think after a review the facts speak for themselves.

I probably won't be complaining anymore either. It's just how the way life with this phone goes, so might as well live with it. Although you may not have liked it, the thread's nature guarantees some posts with people complaining. In my opinion, its a F/W thread, and people complain about the bugs to point them out. Although the complaint factor could be left out, well, it's hard to especially for a device so expensive.

Hope that the R1CE004 or whatever firmware somebody mentioned is real. Can't wait.

Posted by sapporobaby
@obentou

You misunderstood. I am with you in regards to wanting new f/w. Hell complain away and I will be right there with you if they do not get it right when they release it. However, it appears that something is in the works and it should not be much longer if the post from the other person is viable. However the fact that he will not post his link or his source makes his info highly suspect.

Posted by 87ers
So which firmware is currently the most stable? I tried to go thru this thread but it was mostly people's complaints so i gave up.

Posted by jasond
With only really one firmware out, that would be my pick for most stable

But if it is true that a new firmware will be out in a week, then maybe hold your breath for that one.

@mroach
Can you please provide a link to the PDF you quoted from, host the full list somewhere, or create a new thread where you paste all changes?
People won't mind. Cheers.

Posted by aremaboy
It's been a week now and my R1CB001 CHINA hasn't crashed at all. It's all of sudden a very stabile firmware..just checked SEUS and mine is still the latest. Hm..

new firmware coming out this week........

How do you know it's not a rumour? Any link?

I just know nah, saw it on howardforums, look here:

guessing the guy works at se or is associated with them in some way

Nice I hope it will be available soon.

Posted by [CC]RebelsAd
Just a note that the link you posted above leads to a post by MRoach about a 30 page changelog. MRoach posted the same details here as he / she did in the linked post but in both has said he is unable to post the changelog or link to the original file.

As he / she is the only person i have seen discussing the release and changelog of the new firmware i wont hold my breath but only time will tell. Just dont get your hopes up guys and girls in order to avoid the huge volume of moan posts if it doesnt get released next week.

RA.

The numbering of that release, "R1EB00" is a bit strange IMHO. What happened to R1DXX? There is a huge step in revision numbers missing, from R1CF. And the number ending with 00 does not make sense either, since it's supposed to end with a sequence number starting at 1, 01, or 001.

The major release numbering is R1, R2, R3, etc, Minor releases in between majors are R1A, R1B, R1C, etc, until R1Z, and then it continues with two chars, R1AA, R1AB, R1AC, etc. and between each minor release, there are adjustment levels like R1A01, R1A02, R1A03, etc, very similar to the more common 1.2.3 version notation. (If you wonder what the R stands for, it's for "Released". Before the version is released, it's "P" instead, like P1CF001)

And I don't believe that K800 and K610 share the same firmware.

So, sorry, but I think this is nothing but a hoax.

Posted by jasond
Great info, altemyr. Most interesting, thanks.

Posted by aremaboy
Hmm, R1CB001 is the best, then. Why thinking of a new R1EB00 something when it's simply a cheap rumour..anyway 30 pages changelogs? Are they trying to change K800 to K900? Lol..

Regarding adding pictures to Blogger:

I can confirm that neither rotating picture in file manager or in PhotoDJ will make it possible to upload it as vertical on Blogger. It kind of limits the fun of photo blogging, as I see it.

Please add this on bug list! Thanks.

Perhaps a bunch of numbers / letters were skipped since its a huge release. Well, hope it is anyway. This phone is in dire need for an update.

By the way, anybody know when K790a will be released?

For the last two weeks I've been getting an error checking for new firmware (using the phone). It says something about not finding the Sony Ericsson server. It worked before... anyone with the same problem?

Posted by sapporobaby
@CyberVisitor,

I have been going out there off and on for the last few weeks, with earlier over the weekend being the latest time and things seemed to be working fine. Maybe they are putting up the upgrade.

Hey,

Im not sure if this is a firmware bug, but all my default applications and games are no longer on my phone. I even checked with myphone explorer and they are definately gone. The problem is when I try to install a game or app, it says "operation failed". I have loads of memory on the phone and the stick, so that isn't the issue. Have also tried a master reset. Anyone any ideas???

Hi. Anyone having Bluetooth problems? I tried to print a picture on my Samsung SPP-2040B printer via Bluetooth, but no go. Sent the pic to my W900i and sent it from this, everything ok. Also does why not higher video resolution? My w900i takes video 320'240, the K800i only 176'144, why is this? They should open their eyes and make higher resolution video.

Hi,

I recently got a K800i (won it in a competition, so it is unbranded and not tied to any network). The firmware version is R1CA018, which does not match any of the "official" versions listed at the start of this thread. Does anyone know what this version is? Is it a preliminary version of some sort? I have only seen one other reference to it.

I tried running SEUS, but it reported that my phone had the latest version!

Just wondering if it is worth updating to R1CB001.

Why is it when I have the handsfree plugged in, when somebody calls me it plays it out through the phone and not the handsfree earphones?

And I do have Handsfree declared at accessories in the handsfree profile.

I think there was a way to do what you want in a thread in the "tips, tricks..."-section before. Search for it there. Also, why did you post it in the Firmware thread?

ATM, there is no K800i F/W at all uploaded on SEUS Server, so any attempt via SEUS always shows 'no update available'. R1CA018? Hm, what's that anyway? Are the listed bugs present in this R1CA f/w?

At least some of the bugs are present, so I suspect they all are - I have not used the phone much yet, so I have not tried out some of the features that are buggy.

Go: Settings --> Calls --> handsfree --> Bluetooth --> Incoming call

It will then pick the handsfree (if it is a BT hands free) and answer at the headset.

Think I said it wrong =/ I meant the headphones that you attach, not an actual Bluetooth device. My bad

Hi, new to the forum and a new owner of a K800i on O2-UK.

A couple of bugs I've noticed that I haven't seen previously in the thread (maybe to be added to the first post?)

- When the phone is in silent mode, it still makes a beep when you disconnect from a WAP internet connection. All other sounds but this appear to be disabled.

- When you have a 3G signal, the phone refuses to connect to the net via WAP, even if this is the selected internet account. It will connect via GPRS. When no 3G signal, it will connect via WAP no problem.

I already sent my first k800i back due to bugs, only after receiving my second one did I find this forum and find out about the SEUS. This handset has the same bugs as the first but I'm happy to now wait for the firmware update. I think the ability to update firmware is a good move by SE, having had Nokias up to now.

Cheers
