*Message in use bug*

Just to document this issue so its in this thread as a K800i issue as I havent ever had this before on any other SE.....

I recieved a text from O2 about "choose your next month O2 Treat" ring this number etc etc. Anyways, when I tryed to delete the message I had a message saying "Message in use" I could'nt delete it until a handset reboot was done. I then pressed delete and it was deleted.

I am trying to use the SEUS from the sony website but cant get it to work. I get stuck at step 6 where I have to release the 'C' Button. I release it but it goes back to the start button. What is going on? What should I do to get it to work. I am using the USB cable that came with it.

Not sure if this has been discussed anywhere, but I've an issue with .m4a (iTunes AAC) files on my K800.

There's a kind of "limiting effect" that occurs 2 steps from maximum volume level (the last green ball is not lit in the volume bar.)

Basically, at or above this level, the sound gets very "watery". It sounds like something is limiting the volume by chopping off the top parts. Also, going beyond this level doesn't increase the actual volume.

This limiting effect doesn't seem to occur with MP3 files, and definitely doesn't occur with the radio, so it's probably a firmware bug.

I'm a drummer so I might be expected to have bad ears but I've tried the phone with a couple of friends and they all agree the maximum volume with AAC is nowhere near that of any music player they've heard. Also, I listen to the radio at volumes MUCH louder than those when I'm in the Media Player.

Anyone care to confirm this problem?

p.s. My iTunes files are encoded at 80kbps stereo. Using VBR or other bitrates made no difference.

You had the message open elsewhere (or the message alert still open) - I've had this happen too. You just need to check the activities popup and switch to the menu notification.

Using a portrait pic for ur contact pic... The image will be displayed as landscape when tat contact calls or messages... Rather annoying having to see my friend's pic sideways...

Posted by boman1882
rotate the image you want into portrait and then select use as and then select contact and replace exsisting picture,
should now appear in portrait

Posted by obentou
Sorry for the additional question, but I've tried to look for an answer to this... is it possible to turn off the flash when taking pictures? I have a feeling the answer is no.

Posted by b3rx
yes it can. just go to camera mode and press the a/A button until it shows an icon with a flash that is crossed out.

Posted by skylite
@boman1882,

Did that... it appears as portrait in the contact information, but when a msg or call comes in it is in landscape.

Posted by obentou
b3rx,

Thanks. Good to hear that it can. Hopefully will be picking up a K790i soon.

no problems with my media player...volume goes all the way on my m4a(itunes encoded) tracks. though its encoded @ 96kbps stereo. anyways, i'm satisfied with the music quality, however, because of the compression of the file i have to admit that the quality was lessened from the original.

Posted by Phantom
so does anyone else have the problem with the music player cutting off titles and stuff.. and not scrolling the ones that aren't cut off?

How do you mean had the message open elsewhere? I recieved the text, tryed to delete it and it would'nt. After a handset reboot the text however did delete.

One criticism - keypad layout with internet key at left hand side - I have found my phone on the internet several times (I usually keylock the phone).

O2 started charging for GPRS access in May which I used to use loads - last month cost 10.50 for GPRS access. Because of this I have created a blank GPRS profile so the phone never goes on GPRS. Not a fault of the phone as such - just O2 charging a lot for GPRS unlike Voda Live which is free.

Thoroughly recommend the K800 but O2 - not so sure. I might as well be on PAYG.

@skylite: you're right, it's a bug.

@boman1882: That's not the problem, it's a bug. I have the same problem. My contact pictures are all vertical portraits and show up as vertical portraits in the picture album. But if I use them as a contact picture, they show up horizontal/landscape. If I go to the contact in the edit mode, they show up vertical/portrait again! But not if the phone rings or I get a sms by a contact. Then they are landscape...
That's the problem.

@mwarner: Please add it to the bug list on the first page. Thanks!

In the K750i the same pictures show up as vertical/portrait pics in the contacts.

It's the only bug i found in my K800i.

I'm also a bit disappointed about the "cyber-shot" features. Every cheap digicam can set the flash manually on, not only off. The K800i can't.

There's no option to switch off the AF illuminator too. And no menue to manually set the ISO speed. Disappointing.

And worst: the shutter speed slows down to 1/15 of a second bevor the automatic flash fills in. Ok, with the image stabilizer it's possible to get a more or less sharp picture at 1/15s. But not of people. People will move in this time and the picture is unsharp.

For me, I have a lot unsharp picture. More than I would expect from a camera with flash and image stabilizer. It would bee easy to correct that in a firmware update:

1. It must be possible to set the flash manually ON, not only OFF.
2. The automatic flash has to fill in at the latest at 1/30s or 1/60s.
3. Add ISO setting manually

But I guess SE will never add these features
For me they are necessary to call the K800i "cyber-shot"...

At the moment the K800i is just another mobile phone with a camera, but not a "cyber-shot".

@mwarner: can you add this to the "bug" list (even if it's not really a bug) or add as "missing/requested features", please. Thanks!

SE won't listen..:-S:-S They have their own specs and philosophy.

Posted by obentou
Well since the technology is in the phone, I'm sure new functions can arise in future firmware fixes... the engineers at SE just have to do the coding.

Posted by Vercetti
There's a new firmware update for the K800i on http://www.wotanserver.com/
does anybody now what the fixes are?

The only firwares they have available are the T-Mobile firmware and the unbranded firmware, check teh very first post...

Cheers

Posted by blunden
There is a T-mobile branded firmware with that version name. Have they gotten their hands on a generic version of that?

Posted by nino77
That is T-mobile fimware I think. Nothing new I´m afraid

That's too bad

@Vicser

I used to include both K790 and K800 firmware information in this thread, but removed the K790 at a fairly early stage:

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=124349&start=45

The main difficulty is that the K800 and K790 have different firmware revisions, which makes it difficult for me to keep up with the latest information and test for any bugs or fixes that have been discovered. As you may know, the K790 is not readily available in the UK.

Posted by Vicser
their firmwares are nearly the same (except 3G network support and videocalls in K800 and EDGE support in K790) and bugs are accordingly the same.

Posted by aremaboy
So, is there a new f/w for K800i?

NO, only for K790!

Posted by sapporobaby
@hansmusterli,

Dude, do you realize that you are complaining (quite vigorously I might add) about a camera that is included in a phone? I am sorry that you believed the marketing hype but the core function of the k800i is receiving and answering phone calls, not taking pictures. For REAL photography, I use my Nikon D200, but when I am out and about my k800i is fulfilling its function as a fun phone that happens to have a camera for a quick picture here and there.

Dude, you need to let go. At the end of the day it is only a phone.

Posted by peanut
So is it a 3mp cyber-shot camera or not?

I understood the earn that badge that it had to be surely. I love my K800 but the camera sure isn't as good as my original 3mp cybershot sony camera from 6 years ago.

In that time span it really should be regardless if whether it is in a phone or not.

Posted by aremaboy
But why is a new f/w out for K790i? Isn't K800i considered 'of higher level' that deserves more attention?

Posted by sapporobaby
@Peanut,

You have a good point but in realize the difference in the two. Your k800i is a sort of "Jack of all Trades". Phone, camera, media play, COMPROMISE. Whereas a digital camera is simply that, a camera. It is not burdened with having to make and receive phone calls, send and receive SMS's, play media files. Not to make excuses for SE or all "Jack of all Trade" phones, they are compromised by their added functions.

Probably because the k790i came out after the K800i. Maybe it has some tweaks specific to it (EDGE).

Yes, I am.

I wouldn't if they wouldn't print "cyber-shot" on it. And I wouldn't if it wouldn't be so easy to add this feature. Just add a menue to the settings and that's it. I'm not asking for new hardware for the camera or a new chip or a better lens, a faster shutter. Just one setting more for something that is included in the phone anyway.

And as I wrote before: I had less unsharp pictures with my K750i than I have now with the K800i. I don't care about 2MP or 3MP camera. But I have a lot of unsharp pictures with the K800i just because the automatic flash is added too late (means: only if the shutter speed is less than 1/15 of a sec.)

Ah... and this flash shutter speed problem is fixed on the K790i?

Hmm, I'll test out the SEUS today for the R1CG001 update.

And I also agree - if the phone is labelled with cybershot, it should at least include some of the other basic functions of photography - it isn't that hard. If it's going to join the ranks of mainstream cameras of the Sony line, then the phone's camera features will have to be a bit better.

Posted by obentou
OK well, tried to update thru SEUS, didn't work. Says I have the most recent update.

F/W I'm using: R1CC003 APAC.

Has anyone had any problems with USB Charging the k800i, I have had two k800i's now (first one returned due to something underneath the screen) and both of them have not charged from the USB cable connected to my desktop computer, where as my k750i charges just fine. In fact when I plug the k800i into the desktop to charge it actually de-charges the battery. I still get the option to put the phone into transfer mode or phone mode, but it will not charge. If I turn the phone off and then connect the USB cable then turn the phone on, the charging icon will appear but no charging will happen, in fact it will drain the battery, and when you disconnect the USB cable the charging icon is still there.

Posted by blunden
Did you see if it was enabled in the service menu? Can be turned on/off in there.

Posted by deathchurch
Yeeh its enabled, and I have tried disabling it restarting the phone enabling it restarting the phone and it makes no difference at all.

Posted by O2 K800i
@deathchurch

Indeed - I agree - I get to 85% charge as an absolute maximum.

It might be because you are using Bluetooth 1.0 or 1.1. If I am correct, you need to be using BT 2.0 or greater to charge.

Posted by deathchurch
sapporobaby

I don't see why bluetooth would affect USB charging, can you elaborate a bit? cheers.

Posted by Daisun
Maybe the BT is draining the battery while the USB is charging it? ..LoL..

Personally i have never charged my phone on the usb for an extended period of time, i generally just use the charger... but maybe the problem is cause the USB doesn't have enough juice to fully charge the phone?

BT 1.0 nor, 1.1 can charge. I think. I do not remember the spec, however BT 2.0 does charge.

Posted by deathchurch
I am not using bluetooth, nor do I have it switched on (phone or PC). I am using the USB Cable that comes with the phone directly attached to my desktop at work and have also tried it on two different laptops. All of these computers charge my k750i without any problems, but not the k800i.

have you installed all drivers?
