K800 Firmware Overview

OK two things people,

Firstly

@mwarner

You're totally right, the K800 was made bullet-proof unlike the K750, luckily as far as the firmware is concerned its only minor niggles nothing major thank god!

Secondly, I have put an applications shortcut in my activitites menu thing (the small button on the right), however, once I push it, the menu disappears, and it takes a few seconds for the applications menu to appear, and thelist of applications isn't much? I presume its just firmware?

Cheers

ive got another niggle (rather a complaint i must say) that the sound of the media player is far too quiet. It's been noted by another user in another thread, so i dont think it's just me. My W800 (although a walkman handset), and without the megabass switched on, sounded much better and i believe this sound was equal in the K750. Also there were firmware updates to increase the volume levels on the K750/W800 so hopefully there will be something similar done for the K800 in the future. (nb im also using the HPM-70 when listening to music, not the headset included in the K800 box)

So maybe some peeps here could clarify this, and get this niggle added to the list on the first page?

thanks

im having problems with my new k800i

in file transfer mode the computer cant recognise the phone

i plugged in my w800i which the computer could recognise before and now it cant recognise it either

what bug is this one?

Uninstall SE PC Suite and the drivers then insert the disk that came with the phone and install the drivers and software.

There is a newer version of PC suite on the SE website.

I had these problems with my PC which was resolved as above. Interestingly my laptop managed to transfer from the K750 to K800 fine.

Hi guys,

I have had a number of sound related problems over the last few days with my phone. They all seem to be linked and happen at the same time. The list of problems is as follows:

The ringtone doesnt sound no matter what profile you are in. I have checked all the profiles and sound is enabled when it should be.

The media player fails to play a song in speaker mode stating "Playback of media failed".

The phone will not switch to speaker mode when in a call.

I have also had this problem once (At the same time as experiencing all of the above):

There is no sound in the earphone when in a call (No it wasnt transfered to my bluetooth headset although the headset does still work).

As a test i have tried going into the "Services Tests" menu and testing the Speaker and Earphone but neither test would open so i was unable to perform the tests.

All of these issues were resolved by switching the phone off and back on but as you can appreciate not having the ringtone play when you get a call can be really annoying.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

RA.

I have an issue in that I have never once managed to get my 1gb M2 card to show up on the PC.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling PC suite (currently uninstalled, cos it sucks and didn't fix the problem) and it's still the same.

Some of the times I've tried it I don't even get the phone's internal memory to show up, but no matter what I try, I can't get the memory stick to show in "My Computer".

I think the problem might be that when I first plugged the phone in, I just whizzed through the driver installation, letting it "install the hardware automatically", so now it's still using some of the drivers that XP will have downloaded automatically.

I've tried uninstalling all of the devices marked "Sony Ericsson" through device manager, but that doesn't help. At the moment, the only way to transfer files to the memory stick is to send them to the phone memory and then move them to the memory stick using the phone, which isn't very practical.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Guys

Im New here but i got an Orange Branded K800i. I have seen that there have been no orange users posting so i thought i would give you some information.

Firmware Version: R1CB001

CDA: CDA102511/47

Quick Review: So far so good. Not had any problems that other users have had with the RSS or anything. There are a few things, however, that orange have removed in their customisation. Firstly, like vodafone, they have removed the update service. Secondly, they have removed the photo blogging function. I havent heard any comments on this so far so i don't know what it performs like. I was contemplating debranding it but i havent got any major issues with the orange branding at present.

unfortunately, it doesn't entirely work here. I've installed the latest version of opera mini on my SE k800i, however, i've come across a strange problem. If you google for a site from the homepage when you start opera mini you can't select yes or no for the application to access the internet, you get asked the question but the yes/no options aren't there so you have to go to a bookmarked page first as the yes/no option shows up fine for that.

Any suggestions?

I also encountered this bug. There's an easy workaround, though: after entering and confirming a google search, just press the activity menu key and choose to resume Opera Mini. The Yes/No options will magically appear on the softkey labels, and you can give Opera permission to access the internet.

Thanks Meptik, that works great

From what i can gather, this is a problem with the phone rather than opera mini (that's what the people on the opera mini site say anyway) so hopefully it will be fixed in a firmware update.

The only way to get the blogging function back is to reflash the firmware to the generic using wotan or Davinci. However the orange customization is very stable so i would only recommend flashing if the blogging feature is absolutley essential.

In my box i got a data cable and headphones. I had to purchase a 1gb m2 card extra from ebay for around £40 including postage and vat.

I've noticed a small bug from my use of the last month or so, and that is disappearing key tones. I normally have the "click" but after some time the sound disappears - all other sound events continue though. Having experimented a bit, it seems to occur after an alarm has triggered. I have an MP3 for the alarm tone, but playing the same file via the Media Player doesn't recreate the problem.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Apart from that, I'm really happy with the K800.

Posted by Phantasm4489
Yes ive experienced the same problem with key sounds being disabled after some period of time.

Posted by mwarner
Added the key sounds and Opera mini issue to the first post. Thanks guys!

Nice to see Phantasm in the forums! I have much admired your work on the Widcomm drivers over the years .

Does anyone report these as bugs to Sony? I've tried to, but all the e-mails i send to the address on their website (questions.gb@support.sonyericsson.com) just come back as undelivered after 48 hours

hmmm i just plugged in my phone to the pc and then unplugged it. 10 minutes later the phone is still "charging" without any physical connections!!!

I found a very annoying bug in my unbranded EU_2 K800i (R1CB001).
When you activate accept calls feature (before you make list of numbers which can call you ofcourse), then when somebody calls you and that number is not on the list, phone ring and vibrate for about 0,5 sec, which is enough to wake me....grrrrrrr.Such thing never happened before with W800, W810, K700 or even T610.Normaly , phone should not make any noise, just inform you that you have missed call, and that function is made for that.I dont know about other people, but this is major bug for me couse I use this function quite often.

@spud_work

> Does anyone report these as bugs to Sony?

No, but if any engineer at SE types 'K800 firmware' (or indeed K750, W800, K700, K750, T610 etc) into google then my firmware overview threads will be the top hit.

I am sure that the firmware developers do know about Esato and do read our firmware comments.

That's true. The developers at Dell often read Aximsite to find out things about the Axim PDA's.

i've experienced a memory bug, i've placed two albums of mp3s on my 512mb M2. i've only had 49mb left since ive loads of pics and other vids. After deleting the two folders containing my mp3s it still showed 49mb. I've tried inserting the M2 to a card reader but it still showed 49mb left, although the two folders of mp3s i have deleted was removed from the memory card. All i could do was reformat the card. Seems to me like the M2 had the problem. Any of you experienced this? What do you guys think?

I just got a K800 yesterday, and I'm not having the Opera Mini bug - it shows the Yes/No options just fine, no matter what method I use to start browsing (enter URL/google/wikipedia/bookmark).

SW version is the same as everyone else, R1CB001.

i found a bug.
When i use a java prog (in my case mscorecard, a electronic golfcard) and lock the keys in the prog. The web access button and the shortcuts butten still is avalible to use. this resulted that i bougt several songs from vodafone in sweden when it was in my pocket All the other buttons locks like it should!

Posted by mwarner
@figgeo

This sounds like a problem with the Application, not the locking mechanism of the phone. Most applications don't provide a keypad lock option. I suspect your application disables keys in software (i.e. ignores them). but perhaps doesn't support the newer keys of the K800.

Anybody have problems with their call logs?
On my Voda branded K800i it doesn't lists missed calls and it's only got the first two calls made when I first got the phone in outgoing calls.

Are you sure it's not a Vodafone feature, in order to make you buy more songs from them?

Got a call log bug on my generic mid east K800i. the calls i made and incoming calls just suddenly won't show up. it shows the previous call list. found a solution by deleting all call log entries. i hope this would be fixed aswell.

I have Voda branded K800i and no problems with calls logs, have all logs populated fine..........

Added the call log bug to the first page.

I have to say that the bug list is getting quite long now! Luckily, few of them are hugely important, although the missing keypresses whilst typing SMSes does bug me quite a bit .

when deleting games, after it has actually been deleted, the phone goes into the previous folder (file manager) and then quickly re-opens the games folder, bit annoying that....

will k790 not be in this list too? it's already out...

The price of the K800i in Singapore is dropping fast. From S$ 800 just last week, now it has dropped to S$ 750 where a few days ago I checked it was still S$ 770. I don't know the number of sales here and I don't know if it is related to the increasing number of bugs...

Do you think it is a good time to buy K800i now or I should wait until the next firmware revision came out? From the K750i experience, new firmwares can actually bring new more severe problems...

Posted by b3rx
i have a problem regarding the Big Clock theme. it seems that when i activate the big clock, my clock will be very tiny i cant even read the time anymore. anyone can confirm this? im using CHINA FW.

Posted by mwarner
@b3rx
With UK (EU) firmware the clock is correctly sized.

@xan K
> will k790 not be in this list too? it's already out...

I originally added K790 firmware onto the list, but I believe that the released firmware revisions will be completely different to the K800. As we do not get K790s in the UK I would have a difficult time following the firmware releases for this phone, so I decided not to include them.

@nino77
I have verified your Accept calls Only from list bug and have added it to the first post. Thanks for that!

According to bug list, we desperately need new firmware release

well, thanks mwarner. guess we'll have to wait someone else to do it. :|

You can always start one yourself if you like . It does require a little dedication, but if you are interested in your phone and will keep it for a year you'll probably keep fairly up to date anyway.

There seems to be a problem sending text messages that are more than 1 page long on the o2 network.

I get "message sending failed" with a text message that is more than 1 page long, sometimes the recipent gets the message other times not.

Anyonelse experience the same on 02?

I'm on o2 and havent had this problem at all. I did however debrand the phone as soon as i had it out of the box, though i'm not sure that would be the problem.

Mines a sim free K800i. I tested the USIM inside my K750i and no problem sending 2 page textes but inside my K800i I seem to get the message "sending failed" on any text messages more than 1 page long. Sometimes the text would actually be received by the other person when it had said "message sending failed" on my phone.

This is strange, I have emailed Sony Ericsson on it. See what they say.

i think the K800 could use a boost to the call volume. it's a little difficult to hear the other party when you're in a noisy environment. it's not as bad as the K750 with it's initial firmware, but its not up to par with the updated K750 or with my W900.

i don't understand why SE can't make it louder since people who find it too loud can always turn it down. but it is very frustrating not to be able to hear the caller and not be able to turn the volume up any higher.

Posted by rockygali
then eventually... we will wait for that very first K800 firmware update...

Posted by >500
and maybe they can up the volume a bit when listening to music via headset. The last 4 volume bars sound as if they are at the same level. I cant notice a differnce in volume when turning up.....
and maybe the loud speaker too....

and anyone notice this, when opening photos you have taken in the camera album, when you click to open one, its fuzzy/blury at first but then clears up about a second or so later....

Posted by Phantom
i think someone talked about that already.
it does that so you can quickly go through your photos, then when you land on the one you want to view, you leave it, so it'll clear up to the high-res version. it's to make the phone quicker and all that. most digital cameras do it it too.

Posted by >500
hmm ok, didnt know that.. thanks

Oh yes, the volume level certainly SUCKS for the k800..can never hear my phone ringing or the message alert when its in my pocket. The media player seems to be plagued by some AVLS-esque system where all the loud sounds are toned down a notce automatically. I really hope they fix this in the next update.

I think this is intentional, to make the loading of pictures faster (ala "preview mode") which is the same system they have in place on the PSP.

My camera doesn't start when I pull down the lens cover, nor does it shut down the camera the I close the lens cover. According to the manual the lens cover should control the start and shut down of the camera.
Am I experiencing a firmware bug or a hardware bug?
I have an unbranded version of the phone.

Please advice.
