I'm thinking about getting the N80 and want some users to tell me what they think of it?

If you could tell me the positive and negative points and your overall impression that would be great thanks
Dan

i used one for a little while . really really liked it. Awesome phone.
the only negative is the poor battery life(only lasts a day)

i was using the N91 at the same time and stupidly decided to keep the n91 over the n80. completely regretted it!

Well i have had my N80 for just over a week and i got too say its probably all round the best phone to date i have owned. At first i was a bit wary thinking it looked big and bulky and the battery life also worried me dearly. Results from the cam i had seen online were also dissapointing. But after a good deal i managed to get a brand new sim free one and instantly fell in love. Its not too bulky at all maybe a little think but does not feel it. The slide is a bit too loose i feel there is no click or reassurance with it but saying that it seems solid. The screen is absoulutely amazing on it better than w900i i would say. (which i have owned). The camera is okish i have got reasonable results from it though a fw upgrade improves this dramatically. (look at the whizz's shots in the picture thread). The MP3 player on it is also quite capable i have put a 1gb card in and put around 100 songs on and its fine, music plays in the background too soo you can surf the net via wi-fi or wateva with your fave tunes playing. Video seems decent too though not extensively tested that yet. Also concering battery life mine has improved over since i have had i charge it once every 2 days thats with around 2 hours of mp3 playback 30 mins calls load a texts bit of surfing via wi-fi and using the BT a bit. Overall like i said its an amazing phone with the only negatives are cam quality and the easily opened slide. Though a fw upgrade will improve the quality

Here is a pic taken by the N80, my 8800 using the macro mode...

and a quick pic of the N80 itself

(tiz in a crystal case v.good actualli )

I bought one (my very first nokia after years of SE's and ericssons before that) and i can say that it is a lovely phone. At first i thought it was a bit shit because of the way nokias work but once i got used to it i loved it. Screen is amazing, battery isn't that good but i can get 2 days out of it if i wanted to, maybe longer). Hardly any branding (which is a really nice change from Orange se's i've own before). Web brouser is brilliant, cam is pretty good, on a par with the k750 if not better (wont be as good as the k800).

I was going to buy the k800 but it was taking too long for it to come out in the uk so i took the risk and got the N80 instead, as of yet i dont regret the decision

n80, is a great fone, but imo weak battery, its a disadvantge when u wanna use it in umts system. next to it, it has a beautiful screen, great features, but cos of the new system, old apps dont run with it.

Posted by upper
Indeed its a great fone, but i think the n73 wil also be great too espeacially with its 3 mega pixel cam. Can anyone tell me plz if the n73 and the n80 have a2dp?

So the N80 is good overall?

Is there a msn messenger program i could use on it and use it over wifi?

Posted by scottt

Unfortunately it doesnt talk about the a2dp on the phones, maybe none of them have it.

Try detailed search for it

Cool thanks everyone, got a few questions for those of you that have/had the N80.

Is the camera really that bad? can it be compared to say the K750?

What is the video like? W900 6280 or not as good?

Thanks again

Posted by scottt
Checkout thewhizz's pics there http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=82451&start=615

and concering video quality aint really got a good example of it but i would say it aint as good as w900i, not sure on 6280? sposed to be good Its better than say k750i though by a lot.

The pics do look good in that thread, just need to find some ones taken in loo light condition.

Regarding the fw update how do i do that?

Posted by scottt
To upgrade the fw just follow the following instructions found here ......

http://nokia.dogtoe.com/

Posted by p900 lover
Cool thanks, i think im going to go for the N80. Will give o2 a call soon and see how much they say on upgrade hmm

Thanks guys for all the info

Posted by BOOYAR
@whentheleveebreaks. Did you get the n80 on orange upgrade as its that time again for a free upgrade and i'm Thinking about doing this myself but they quoted me 180 for this particular phone. Seems alot

Posted by p900 lover
o2 direct told me £120 to upgrade, so i might move to cpw lets see what they say

Posted by p900 lover
Right im going to port my number over to CPW o2 and get the N80 for £24.99 on a 35 pm tariff.

Still have to wait for my PAC code so should have the N80 by the end of the week yay

Posted by SE Rules
Well I just got mine from Phones4U, got it on 3 for free on a £22.50 tariff. Its an awesome little phone, it may look big and slightly thick, but I can't honestly say I can feel in my jeans etc. The features more thasn make up for it. The battery isn't so bad, its lasted 2 days on its first charge with heavy bluetooth use and videos/cam etc. So, that can only improve in a few charges.

Cheers

Posted by p900 lover
Is that an 18 months contract or 12?

Posted by SE Rules
18 i believe, but Phones4U offer to buy the contract at 12months, then give you a new contract, so I'm probs gonna upgrade then, hopefully in time for the N83....

Posted by p900 lover
Cool cool i think im going to go with o2 at cpw cos then the phone is nearly sim free with no branding

Posted by SE Rules
I've gotta say, my N80 shows very little branding, its only got a wallpaper and a link to the website, no buttons have been changed or anyting, theres also a little logo on the battery cover, easily replaced though...

Cheers

An improved version of the N70 (which I was very disappointed at ) perhaps, I just like it's - 3 MP camera

Posted by scottt
@ JN, its a world apart from the N70 mate.

Screen beats it hands down, cam is better, nicer design, addition of wi-fi, running of symbian v3 all adds up to put it into a differant leaugue

Posted by p900 lover
To be honest im really not to keen on 3 as a network but on the other hnd you do get great airtime offers.

Just ordered my N80 from cpw should have it 2moro.

Will post a few pics and tell you hot it is when i get it

Posted by scottt
@p900 lover , its so hot its nearly as hot as Jessica Alba in hot pants

Posted by SE Rules
@scott

You ain't too wrong there dude!

@JN

The network isn't so bad, I mean the contract I've got with them couldn't be beaten by any of the others, plus, 3 gives you free downloads every month, and you can browse theri website eithout being charged like on say O2.

But if you prefer the others, thats cool.

Just had a bit of news, looks like I'm keeping my K750 on O2 Online 25, which has no line rental, but has 25 free mins and 25 free txts a month, perfect for taking out to clubs where I don't want to lose my N80!

Cheers

the nokia 8800 picture taken with n80 is inferior to k800 picture quality. screen is better though with wifi i think but i love sonyericsson.

Posted by BobaFett
i ve been offered a light used, boxed n80 for 425 euro. what do u think? is that worth?

Posted by p900 lover
Its worth it if your going to use it, cos i remember you saying you didn't like the battery life(which is understandable) so there is no point in you getting it if you dint like it.

i finally got my N80 and one thing i have to say its very sloooow so unless a fw will change that its going straight back to the shop. other than that i like it but have loads of questions so i might turn this into a "N80 thread" what do you think?

Let me start then:

1) How do i check what fw i have?

2) Is the back sliddy switch for the macro meant to be very tight?

3) is there a way for me to change the settings so when i close the phone it stops asking me to lock it and does that automatically?

That's it for now cos i cant remember the other but there is more lol

Thanks guys

Posted by scottt
May be your fw making it slow, i was quite pleased with the speed of mine actually, there is never any lag. Is yours branded? To check firmware you type in *#0000#, the macro switch is meant to be fairly tight i think so it dont switch while in your pocket or whateva , and i dont think you can change the keypad lock notice when closing the phone, must admit it is annoying

Posted by p900 lover
I have an o2 branded one, it is possible to get these unbranded yet?

I have this fw:
V 3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
NOKIA N80 (33.01)

i have no idea what this means to be honest lol

Posted by scottt
Yup you can debrand by following the instructions in the link i left earlier in the thread.

Here it is again http://nokia.dogtoe.com/

Posted by p900 lover
Yup i looked at it and under the N80 there are 2 files, do i download both?

1 more question, when i try and enter my WEP key for my wireless router it only gives me 4/5 characters i can enter and my WEP key is much longer, any way round this?

Posted by p900 lover
Anyone?

Also how do i add music files so they show up in Music Player?

Thanks

Posted by BobaFett
never used music player in any of the symbians i had, sorry.

with this code u can see the total call time, this one cannot be deleted, u need a special program for it:

Thanks scott_87, would you know how so set up the N80 to use my wifi conection at home?

Posted by scottt
I cant remember how i did it myself i think i may of used the instructions lol. I remember not being able to enter my full WEP key in but i did something then it let god knows how though soz.

Posted by p900 lover
Thats what it is i cant enter my full WEP key

Posted by p900 lover
I have just looked at the instructions and to be honest its not very clear how to do it, i cant enter my full web key and that's where I'm stuck

Posted by Si_V80
Does anyone have one on orange? Mine keeps connecting to gprs and using my f*cking credit. Iv set my packet data thing on connect when need to.

Any ideas?

Posted by darrengf
Ok regarding the Orange connection problem.

There is a known issue with the first batches of phones and yes Orange and nokia are fully aware of this.

There has been may complaints on the Nokia Forum regarding this and the new firmware does sort the problem out.

The N80 is a great phone I have one, The screen is superb and the phone handles things much better than i thought,

However The battery that is shipped with the phone is poor, To be honest and yet again there are loads of complaints, The battery is really not up to handling the power the phone demands, Nokia is aware of this but have no plans of changing this

I have got the latest firmware which is 3.0617.06. However this will shortly be updated to ver 3.06.20.xx. Or possible even higher.

There are still may bugs with the phone, like there was with the K750 at the begining.

Regarding the WeP key problem yep i had the same problem.

Go into options and choose what type of passwork you have, eg hexadecimal. The resolves the problem regarding the password length.

I luv the phone to bits and Have had all the SE range, Im just waiting for my K800 now.

If you want any more info on the N80 then please email me, I will gladly help you guys out.

Same again if you have any problems with the N80 on Orange.

I also have a list of updates from vers 3 software to 6 if any one requires this.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Darren

Posted by Si_V80
I have the same software version as you. I found out in the settings -> phone settings, there is a option that says "delete operator default setting"

Problem solved
