I just bought a 2nd lacie 250gb hd from america it came to about $128 but I used a discount code and Im only paying like £40 which is a bargin, I just want to know how likely it is I will be taxed? I asked the seller to try to lower the chance of import tariffs by marking it as a gift etc

Hows he shipping it? if its just standard mail i doubt it, i have orderd many a item from canada an never been stung.
Heard it helps if the package its marked as a gift, dont know if this is true tho?

hmmm, well shipping was like $40 so im not to sure really I guess its quite heavy but its also going via insured airmail so I don't know

I think you won't get taxed if it's below a certain value - something like £130 so you should be OK. Even if it's over I think it's down to luck.

If it's marked as a gift you should be OK, I've bought a few bits and bobs from places like Hong Kong, Singapore etc. and never been charged any duty (though it has usually just been smallish items like phone facias).
I've sent a few phones like this too, marked as a 'gift', not heard anything back from these people that they've been charged for tax etc.!

hmmm I don't knwo ive bought plenty of cheap items from abroad before like 30 quid and under, and I know if they are markerd as gift you dont pay import dutey on them, Im sure there must be a page somewhere on this, any one know where?

i posted something to UK and marked as a gift and the person receiving was charged around 80pounds vat i think. Any thing that is valued over 38pound is charged at 17.5 vat. And i had this thing insured at $1000AUD value, hence the high vat. And yes there shouldnt be any vat on marked gifts, but there was, i dont know why... They might charge a tax, they might not, who knows

hmmm....as far as i know (which may be wrong!), you have to pay tax on all items worth over £18 in the EU, and you have to pay tax on everything from elsewhere? - dunno whether there is some special relationship with the U.S.A. because Torie Bliar (lol!) might just like to let the 'dubbaya' dude ship his bombs over here!
EDIT - if it's marked as 'gift' then yeh you should probably be alright...because that might just be there way around the little blair/bush thing? - nice gift...a load of bombs eh?

aye, but I will probally have to pay return shipping and shipping a new item back to me, its a total joke, be basically sent me this cheapo one whcih looks pretty scummy, if I wanted this oen I would have got one from the uk off dabs for about 70 quid rather then go to all the hastle of ordering it from america etc!
