Think I've found a cheap, readily available alternative to Displex!

I recently recieved a Samsung D600 with a very scratched display, looks like a previous owner had a case on it and a load of dust got trapped behind it. Shame, as the rest of the phone was in a fairly good condition.

As the screen was already pretty scratched (see the picture at the bottom of this post) I thought I'd try some Turtle Wax 'Safe Cut Scratch Remover' on it, which is normally used for getting rid of light scratches in car paintwork.

And you know what, it's working! It needs quite a few applications (I use kitchen roll/paper) and a bit of elbow grease but it does seem to be getting rid of the scratches! It looks a lot better than it did, may not get the screen perfect but a lot more useable than it is now! Going to give it a few more applications to see how good it can get and post the result, but here's what the screen looked like when I got the phone:

Here's the result after about 6 applications:

Not a bad result I don't think! You can still see the deeper scratches, but they are a lot less obvious, and may well come out with a few more applications.

I would probably have just bought a new facia if it wasn't a Samsung slider, but these are a bugger to take apart and things like the data ribbon are notoriously fragile and tempremental so decided on this method instead.

What do you think, good result?

it looks quite good
i also heard you can use toothpaste to remove scratches or silver polish ,
would like to see the end result

btw, I'm not using that wallpaper normally, I just put that one on to help with the comparison as it was on the other picture!

I normally use something a bit less 'girly'!

Didn't realise you could use toothpaste also, bet the phone smells fresh and minty afterwards!

I imagine you could use other paintwork scratch removers too, I daresay you could use T-Cut, though not sure if that will be too abrasive.

yeah its great the wax sorts of fill up all the groves and line ... but toothpaste? it dries up and turn all white?

Posted by shaliron
Yeah, that is a pretty good result. Considering it looked as though the previous owner dragged it through a car park.
And I'm curious on how toothpaste would work...

Wow thats very nice. I should try it with my w800 but my w800 has cut, not scatch so I am not sure if it work. Anyway great result and where did u get ur hand on a free d600? I want one lol.

Posted by Sammy_boy
No, it wasn't free!

Unfortunately this won't work with cracked facias, and use it on a painted area and it will probably take the paint/finish off, so it should be only used on scratched/marked screen areas.

yeah thats quite good and smart!!!

but i use displex got some displex still got some hardly use it!

use brasso. Yeah i know it sound strange but it works wonders on ipods.
Google it. I tried it myslef, and it nearly restores to original conditon, however its best to use it with a microfibre cloth.

Sammy,

where did you get the wallpaper from?

lol my D600 is way better condition

not 1 mark on it

Ps, will miss your photo's in the D600 thread hope you buy abnother Samsung phone soon

samsung=bad battery life , lol

Hoping to get one soon, I do seem to have a weakness for Samsung sliders! I do at the mo have a couple of older Samsungs - a P510 (with the motorised flip-up and down!) and an old A800 - might keep the A800 as it's a tiny little phone!

I'm sorry to see that D600 go, I was rather fond of it, might have to go for an E900 when they get a bit cheaper!

@jack - I didn't find the battery life too bad, though it could have been better it was no better or worse than other makes I've found.

At least that paint restorer got rid of the worst of the scratching before I sold the phone, and actually have made about £15 profit!

LOL Sammy you never answered my Ques bout the Wallpaper

If I were you wait for the D900 personally cos it wont be long before my D600 thread become the D900 Photo thread hehe

Battery life is pretty good on the D600,
at first it would run out out quick so I bought a spare battery but then starting chargin it alot longer then it was ok

I think the morel of these phones is let them charge for 2-5 hours then there longer lasting

Sadly not sure where the Mr Men wallpaper came from, and don't have it on my PC either (should've transferred it) or I would have emailed it to you

Yes, I'll keep my eye out for the D900, though also got my eyes on the K790/800 for when I have a little money or at upgrade time!

Posted by Miss UK
Oh thats a shame,

I find it hard to put pics onto the phone from the pc,
everytime I do it they come out the wrong size of the screen or have gaps at the top

Btw yeah wait for the time to upgrade,
im due a new phone december nice pressie for me I think a new little phone

already know what I want tho D900!!!!!!!
don't like the K800i

hehe

I want to mention that car scratch remover wears down the paint/laquer. Many don't fill scratches, they only wear down the area around it do make it seem as it's gone. I know this from experiance when i was removing scratches from an old car and eventually worked my way through the paint and left a huge silvery patch on the inside of the door sill. I would recommend not pushing too hard or putting on a lot of applications as you may end up with a hole in your screen. Be warned, only use the scratch remover if your sure it fills the area!

My Z550i's screen has scratch-like impressions from the area surrounding the key-pad (the keys are at a lower level than the surrounding region)... any suggestions?

Now that’s elbow grease. You will have the paint layer then a clear lacquer layer over that and as you say you are really cutting the lacquer layer back flat to get rid of scratches.

I would have thought anything with small particles in it would cut the plastic screen back flatter. The smaller the particles the slower it will take, so toothpaste although very mildly abrasive will cut the screen back but I would had thought it would take forever.

Another good way (for car paint so might work for plastic) is you use the finest wet and dry 800/600 grit, this will produce a surface with 100's and very fine scratches which at 1st sight might seem worse but then you cut it back with T-cut et al to get that perfect glass like finish. The point of making the surface with 100's scratches is to get the whole surface to the same height with a uniform finish, which means when you use the cutting compound it will cut really flat. Like I say this is for car paint so anyone with a heavily scratched spare/broken screen who can try this out? Deep scratches however will not come out what ever method you use.

I found a scratch FILLER while I was going through the classified section of Top Gear magazine. Its called Muc-Off Miracle Shine. It's availiable from Halfords. Don't know the price though.

I've used Duraglit and Meguiars Scratch X to good results before now !

Hey Sammy boy, no need to take the d600 apart to change screen, just warm it up with a hair dryer and then using sharp blade gently lift top edge away from case once edge is clear it comes away easy, clean off old adhesive and fit new one, if you just want to clean dust out you can use double side tape cut into thin strips and refit old screen.

Posted by Residentevil
Good job. That looks really good indeed.

EVERY BODY GUESS WHAT !!!

I just tried using toothpaste on my old T68i and guess what the screen was still as scratched as ever. It didnt even remove tiny hairline scratches. One good thing tho, it smelt and tasted minty fresh

Posted by Sammy_boy
Indeed, I could have just removed the D600's old screen and bought a new one from Ebay, though this method I used cost me almost nothing, and I have plenty of that paste left for other phones (Or indeed my car! )
