Sony Ericsson introduces the Z710 – an elegant camera clamshell for the business environment and beyond
18 May 2006

London, UK - 18 May 2006 - Sony Ericsson today announces the Z710, the camera phone that will appeal to the hard working person looking for a phone to fit an intensive business and private life. This EDGE-capable clamshell packages a suite of advanced business and multimedia features in a sophisticated and stylish design.

“The Z710 is perfect for business and personal use,” says Jan Wäreby, Corporate Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing, Sony Ericsson. “It offers many features that today’s business people expect in a phone such as easy synchronisation with a PC to keep calendar and contacts up to date and its sophisticated, yet casual design fits today’s professional lifestyle.”

Business-friendly features include push e-mail support and RSS feeds for news updates and traffic reports direct to your phone. PC tools include synchronisation of your phone book and calendar as well as USB 2.0 support. A 64MB Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) is supplied that is expandable to 1GB and can be used to store and transfer any type of multimedia content, including text, graphics, video, stills and audio files.

The Z710 also features the Access NetFront™ full HTML browser. It makes web access on the move as simple as on a PC and EDGE speed means pages download rapidly. It also has the latest Bluetooth™ 2.0 with HDR (high data rate) for fast data transfer with other Bluetooth devices, providing robust, quality connections for accessories such as wireless headsets and handsfree car kits. The Z710 also supports Bluetooth™ streaming in stereo (A2DP) so you can enjoy the full stereo power of the phone’s media player completely wire-free.

The 2 Megapixel camera captures sharp, crisp stills and video and these are easily shared using MMS, Bluetooth™, stored on the Memory Stick or transferred quickly to your PC via USB.

When it’s time for you to switch off, the entertainment suite includes a high performance media player and FM radio with RDS. The media player supports all of the common music file formats, including the new e-AAC+, which dramatically reduces memory space and download time.

The clamshell design allows for a large external LCD screen. This allows many functions to be performed without opening the phone. By using the direct keys next to it, the media player, FM radio, SMS message review, previewing tasks and diary appointments can all be accessed and controlled.

The Z710 is a Quad-band EDGE/GPRS phone available in Twilight Black or Metallic Sand and starts shipping during Q3 2006. It is available in the following variants:

Z710i Quad Band EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Americas

Z710c Quad Band EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 for Mainland China

I thought it is forgotten

A bit like a W810I in a clamshell with updated bluetooth.

Posted by c96sthl
But it is not a walkman

Posted by goldenface
Another view but with the keypad.

Posted by PeterKay
2mp camera and 64mb card supplied, not bad for a clam.

Posted by c96sthl
oh well you can always buy a M2 with larger memory size.

the nice question now is....can Z710 be flashed to the firmware of W710 hehehe

Posted by mcrosser
I like this phone, look very proffesional

Posted by Del
I like this one alot, I've always wanted a decent clamshell from SE.

It looks like there is no auto focus though.

Posted by c96sthl
clam shell not meant for camera function mah

Posted by masseur
why not? that seems a strange assertion

Posted by c96sthl
...tough to have a design which work out nicely in industrial design for
dual front design.

I can't think of one....yes...it can have a swivel mechanism...but how to have tht famous dual front design which look like camera at the back for
a clam shell?

Oh well maybe I am wrong and SE already figure out how to make tht happen.

If tht really happen....it might have a big WOW factor.

I still can't imagine how to make a phone look nice when you have flip tht is full of buttons hehehe.

Posted by shaliron
Actually the Sharp ones hae a dual front like design, although they are fairly clunky. The most suitable design of a dual front SE clamshell would be something like the Mitsubishi M430i/M900. I can imagine a metalic recessed sliding down cover similar to the V600.

Posted by c96sthl
So now someone should start sketching here so when se manager visit this site. They get tips how to make the first dual front clam shell

nice info....too bad the review from your page is not as detail as those in mobile-review.com

I did not have the device as long as Eldar

Posted by hitmark
hmm, how similar are the Z710 and the W710 in external design?

i see that the W710 review over on mobile-review claims that you have to pop the battery cover of to open the slot for the memory card. is it the same on the Z710?

Posted by Residentevil
An appealing phone. A great successor to the Z600

Posted by c96sthl
go check out the photo gallery in www.sonyericsson.com

it shows the battery cover just look very similar on the memory stick area.

meaning it is the same method as per what mobile-review.com mentioned

Brilliant! Thanks for that info.

Makes me want a W850i he he. I think its a really nice piece of kit.

Z710 looks very cool! I might get one when it's out!

Posted by hitmark
Hrmf. Better get a big memory card then so i dont have to swap so often. Still, this one or the samsung one with the same name...

Posted by DCUK7
Will the UK version of this phone have PTT, thats what I want to know. The PDF on this phone mentions nothing about it which makes me think they have removed this feature!

Posted by c96sthl
well....have to stay tune I guess as the official site still mentioned PTT is available.

So....UK also start jump into the PTT buzz ...

The z710 is awesome. With a 1 GB memory stick m2, it's a great clam shell! It has been a great upgrade from my k700.

Any idea where I can find the new \"sand\" color? All anyone's selling in the US is the black one, the Eshop included.

Posted by eurav4
How is tyhe sound quality of this phone? and also picture quality

Posted by t68iNWO
I haven't seen the sand color anywhere. I've searched mobilecityonline.com and all the other typical sites like mobilplanet, myworldphone, simoncells, etc. I know the release was limited. I did not check ebay, so you may want to give that a shot.

Sound quality is excellent as well as call quality. I use T-Mobile USA. Loud Speaker is great and provides excellent sound, especially for playing music (if you don't have the desk speaker stand). Picture quality is a bit above average, 2 Megapixels, but no autofocus.

Posted by manivassakam
Is it possible to load W710 software on to the Z710.
I just need the walkman player into Z710. For me Z710 looks
better than W710 . Adding walkman player would be ideal.
If anyone has been successful, please give details..

Posted by marktang
yes it is possible to flash a z710 to a w710 but the fitness application on the w710 wont work on a z710 that's all.

Posted by manivassakam
I don't need fitness apps. How do I do the flashing..

Posted by marktang
just go to wotanserver and flash it there.

Posted by vv
i just got the z710...and i can't use mp3 as ringtones like everyone says it could.
i went to file manager and selected the mp3 file..right clicked 'more' and 'use as' but i can't click the use as ring tune selection...-_-
can someone help me?
thanks!

Posted by marktang
u'll need to unbrand your phone or use the DRM packager to change your mp3 files in order to play it in your phone. if you are in toronto then send me a msg then i can help u out.

Posted by c96sthl
sand will look way better than black

i am using one.

if you got some light color stain...it won't be very obvious too

Posted by c96sthl
w710 have a walkman player which give you the track ID or gracenote service ( I forgotten how SE actually call it but you can record some clip and send to a server to look for the song)

then with walkman player...come mega bass

Z710 don't have these function but I doubt you really need mega bass if you got a pair of good in ear.

also....you just donno how the phone react if you put w710 firmware in since the firmware will have stuff for the fitness function and interaction with the pedometer in the electronics which Z710 dont have.

my advice is stick with what you got......you never know what happen after you did this flashing...if it cannot be fixed after using w710 cause lots of bugs.....

Posted by marktang
i have flashed my z710 already to w710...everything works the same except for the fitness program...the one that counts how many steps u take does not work because it doesnt have the right hardware. it is very safe to flash to w710. and if there was a bug in the w710 u can always just flash it back to z710...its not a problem at all.

my unbranded Z710 seems to have a "my friends" entry under messages at least. dont know if that is PTT or something else as here in norway there are no PTT services up...

Posted by jpatricks1
Just got mine last week. I was gonna buy one earlier but all I could find was the sand colored one. It took a while to get the black one.

Biggest bug is when you open the phone and there are no letters anywhere (menu, messages etc). Buttons are pretty hard to press compared to my old K610. Menus take some time to load if you launch it from the shortcuts menu. Otherwise the phone is great. Sound quality's better than my old K610. I never had problems using mp3's as ringtones or message alerts.

One thing I miss from my old phone was that you can watch videos full screen.

Posted by hitmark
hmm, i must have ran into a bug or something.

it seems to shut down when i close it while its in the process of sending a sms...

and yep, i have the latest firmware (that i know of).

Posted by alex_mayorga
@hitmark

I've got a Z710i for my wife as an anniversary gift. Looks like the unit is buggy as hell.

The current firmware on it is CXC1250434 R1EE001 060902

I've tried SEUS on it already, but it says that the software on the phone is current and it won't update.

The most annoying bug is that the call log only shows blank entries, so is not possible to dial/caller ID people that had called her.

Can you please post your software version?

Where should one report bugs to?

Is this common?

Should I ask for a replacement while it's still under warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Posted by Rookwise
I would suggest you return and ask for a replacement. The latest Z710 firmware is very stable with no noticeable problems. Have been using it on my Z710 since buying it nearly 3 months ago and not once had a problem.

Just reporting in with the solution (knocking on wood), given I saw a person with this same problem on Yahoo! Answers but I couldn't answer before the question closed.

I had to turn of, do a master reset (careful: the messages/contacts would be swiped), take out the battery, put battery back on and turn on the phone and its now working properly.

Anyhow, I'll keep an eye on it in case it develops other problems.

sorry for the lack of reply.

the current firmware im looking at (the built in updater cant find any thats more recent)is:

cxc1250434 r1jc002 070122

and the shutdown issue i talked about in my post seems to come and go, so i cant make up my mind if its a hardware issue or a software issue...

HELP please!

I debranded my Z710i and now the Events/Shortcut button doesn´t work, it acts the same as the internet button.

Any idea?

Thanks!
