Do o2 do 3g yet in the uk? If yes what is there coverage? What services do they needs via 3g?

Posted by awave
i think they have 3g, but i'm not atall sure about it. i have never seen an O2 UK 3g signal when searching to see what signals are where when traveling around. But they have blokia n70 don't they? that's 3g isn't it. and if they didn't have 3g...but sold a 3g phone - how bloody pointless is that!

As for the services they offer, its probably at about the same level as what they have at the moment (on 2.5g(gprs)), but hyped up by a 3g connection.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
o2 has 3g. 3g coverage for o2 is available in most of the major city's around the uk. they are always updating the network to support 3g

Posted by mob453
seen several o2 3g sites around, o2 will sell you a 3g usim for access.

Posted by Sammy_boy
Isn't o2's 'i-mode' their 3g?

Posted by jcwhite_uk
i-mode is seperate to 3G. O2 do do 3G but the reception is limited.

If you want 3G in the UK, you need 3 (wouldnt recomend them), Orange or Vodafone. O2 and T-Mobile 3G reception is very limited.

Posted by fatreg
orange 3G is indeed the way forward,

although i may be a lil biased

I have been using Orange 3 g and o2 3g.
very impressed with them both, However i have only been able to used o2 in one place.

On Orange I have used it in most places i go with out problems.

I have even got a Orange 3g signal in the country side where there isnt o2 or vodafone at all.

Very happy with it

Im planning on getting the SE P990 Once it comes out......Now i am currently on a 1 month rolling contract with O2 would i need to get anything enabled/upgraded to take advantage of the 3G service when i get my P990????

I can use the full http GRPS gateway and opera works fine on my P900 at the moment so data seems to be ok but what about 3G?

Posted by SCORPIONKING1982
you may need a new sim card and/or 3g activated on your account, youll have to speak to customer services about what exactly you personally need though.

you wont need any different settings in your phone.

Posted by mrvanx
Yer they should be able to sort me out. They did a really good job of transfering my number from PAYG to contract when i took the online sim card offer....so i should be fine once ive got the P990.

Guys - just ordered up my K800i on O2. For now I just want it because it is the next one up from my K750i - I'm not bothered at the moment about 3G.

My question however is - do you think the phone will be able to access GPRS - WAP etc etc from a regular SIM? I buy a phone from O2 each year because they do not lock them or brand them excessively - but need to be able to use my work SIM (orange) - in it when needed. From the threads I think that if I do not activate the 3G SIM supplied with the phone it should be no different from using the K750I on different networks...Or am I in for a nasty surprise?

Posted by Aware
@englishmanabroad: you should be able to switch off 3g in the 'Settings/Connectivity/Mobile Networks' menu on the phone.....

@mrvanx
Vodafone added 3G to my account over the phone; O2 told me I had to purchase a USIM to use the service

Posted by englishmanabroad
Thanks! @Aware.

I will change the settings to switch off 3G- just thought that if I activated the new 3G SIM with O2 - it would deactivate my existing O2 SIM - I guess I should wait until the thing gets delivered

Posted by m100
You should be able to use both 2G and3G sims as long as you have the settings.

If you activate the 3g sim it will deactivate your usual sim. You may be able to use your 3g sim in a non 3g phone

Posted by englishmanabroad
Thanks @Peanut! That is what i was afraid of. Me thinks i will try and get away with non activation of the 3G SIM for now! ...Now where is the postman??!

Posted by jcwhite_uk
You can use a 3G sim in a non-3g phone. I have done it. I use an O2 3G sim in a T68i

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Cheers jcwhite_uk I was just about to make a post asking that. I'm after either a K800i or might wait until the P990i comes out and I wanted to know if I could use a o2 3G sim in say a K750i for the time being.

I have to first get a o2 3g sim from o2 you see. I have heard they dont give USIMS to prey pay customers unless you buy a 3g handset. I will be buying a handset sim free you see as I always do as it takes forever until decent handsets are out on pre-pay. Do you think I would have any trouble obtaining just a USIM from o2?

I see orange online give them just like that on prepay. I would like to keep my number too and would prefer to stick with o2.

Posted by Ja99iE
I'm not right bothered about 3G, I don't really see the point in all that video calling business, just fancied the K800 really. Just as well looking at that O2 coverage map, with me living out in the sticks!

Posted by vorl13
has anyone got a coverage map for orange and 3 3g...just thought it would be interesting to compare it to o2s?

Posted by darrengf
If you go to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml

this list every 2g and 3 g network and maps for the world.

its a great place to compare.

Orange and three are both on there.

Hope this helps

Posted by vorl13
cool thanks..its a pretty interesting website!!

looks as though vodafone has the best signal then orange...3 looks the worst- surprising, considering they were the first to release it!!

Guys,

3's network runs on O2's network, so therefore, whatever coverage you have with 3 is the same as O2!

Cheers

Having looked again at O2 coverage map it appears that they are expanding the 3g network slowly. They are now showing 3G where I work but on within about 1 mile area. Where I work isnt exactly a large town (ringwood, hampshire) but the nearest large town (bournemouth) doesnt have 3g. Weird.

Posted by leerichards
Looking at 02's own site for coverage. It lists :

High - Video Calls / News
Standard - Voice/SMS/MMS/ Music, O2 Active

I'm assuming standard is 2G, high is 3G

My home location is 2g only and the phone backs that up. At my parents house, which is also in a 2G area (and about 5 miles away) I consistently get the 3G icon displayed on my handset. How come? Both locations are nowhere near the nearest 'high' area.

Does anybody know how i can check whether my sim is 3G compatible or not?
When i purchased my k800i i had my pay as you go number ported to my new contract, i assumed that they would port my pay as you go number across to the 'unactive sim' i was given with my k800i. But all they did was swap my pay as you go sim card to my contract, i think.
Im not sure but i think my pay as you go sim was not 3g compatible.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

@RandomHero

I am guessing from your post that you weren't using a 3G PAYG handset. If that is the case then one would have thought that they should have given you a USIM with your K800. Another possibility is that O2 are only giving out USIMs to customers, whether they are 3G customers or not, so your PAYG SIM card might actually be a USIM.

Posted by aminator
take the simcard out and have a look at the sim serial, if its 3G it normally says something like 3GD2 at the bottom, failing that look at the sim holder it came in (part you snapped the sim out of) on the blue side it will either say GSM or 3G in the corner. HTH

rereading the post above, PAYG simcard are not 3G ones, they are 2G ones. Also, your "inactive" sim should be a temporary active number while they port your PAYG to the contract, make sure its being done as if they cocked it up you cant port in after 14 days

I'm in SW London, Zone 2, which is 5 miles from the centre and can't even get decent 2G coverage, never mind 3G! I have never made a video call, ever, as I everyone I know on 3G is outside the 3G area whenever I call them from central London, and everyone I know with Nokia N70s seems to have 2G sims in 'em... Got a decent deal on a K608i on 3 for mum though, it was £40 plus £30 PAYG airtime.

Posted by RandomHero
Are k800i's supposed to come with a 3g simcard?
If so, mine didnt!
I think i will go to CPW tomorrow and ask them to give me a 3g sim card.

nope - sadly not! - ok right....time for some explanation....:

'3' - (hutchinson 'three'), ONLY own a 3G network. this means that in places where they do not have there own 3G coverage, they have to be backed up by someone else's GSM coverage.

right....at the moment, with a '3' phone, you use the O2 network to roam (to make calls/texts out of 3G area). at the end of this year, '3' are going to switch to using orange as there backup network....there are going to be more services offered then (not sure about orange 3G being used as backup though). If you buy a '3' phone now, while they are still with O2, at the end of this year - you will be able to roam onto both O2 + orange networks, aswell as using '3's own UMTS (3G) network - just not sure whether to buy a sim card so if i decided to go '3' then i can still use o2 then :S

I got my K800i on an O2 upgrade, mine came with a 3G sim inside the box, ( a bit pointless really there doesnt seem to be any coverage in east anglia)

Went into carphone warehouse today and got it all sorted out.
Not much 3g coverage in the south of england but there ya go.

I spoke to O2 payg over the weekend and told them I was leaving to move over to Orange.

They are sending me out a PAYG sim free of charge and they can also port your number from your old 2.5g. So, if you need a 3G sim, ring them up and ask them for one.

I am a bit worried about the coverage. I had a 3G signal from Orange but the 2.5g signal was poor, I had to lean out of window to get 3-4 bars.

The O2 2.5g signal is really strong and works anywhere in my flat. I h ope the 3g signal is nice and strong.

Posted by peanut
I'm disinterested in o2's 3g at best. where i get a really strong 2.5 signal i get a weak 3g signal and vice versa. it's very annoying!

Posted by goldenface
I definitely wanna go 3G now. Not for video calling in particular, just because it is well - faster.

I know my data charges will go up but I have an Orange 3G sim so I can always swap over if they are cheaper.

Posted by traceuk
wot is the easiest way to check that my 3g sim is working please

Posted by RandomHero
phone up o2 and ask if 3g is activated on your sim.

Or find out where your nearest 3g aerial is and go by it to get a signal for 3g and try video calling or the internet.

Posted by m100
Are 3G video downloads at a higher resolution and/or less compressed than on 2G?Will a 3G sim work in a 2G mobile (including GPRS)?
