BEGINNING May 1, Smart Communications Inc. said it will start charging post-paid and pre-paid subscribers of its 3G service.

Smart said that subscribers using 3G-capable handsets will now pay certain rates to enjoy applications such as live video streaming from two major television networks and 3G downloads of full music tracks and video clips.

Launched on February 14, Smart has offered its 3G services, such as video streaming, video calls, high-speed Internet browsing and downloading of special 3G content on a free-trial basis.

Starting May 1, Smart said that the introductory pricing Smart 3G services will be "aligned with existing 2G rates while some services will remain free of charge."

Subscribers using video calling service will not be charged, Smart said.

However, Smart 3G subscribers who make international video calls will have to pay the regular price for an international direct dialing call or about 0.40 dollars per minute to at least eight foreign 3G operators in six countries. This rate will apply to NTT DoCoMo in Japan, CSL, Smartone and Hutchison in Hong Kong, Starhub in Singapore, Chunghwa in Taiwan, Vodafone in Germany and Mobilkom in Austria.

Smart said more operators will be added in the coming months.

Meanwhile, charges for video calling on international roaming will remain the same as international roaming voice rates for both outbound and inbound roamers, Smart said.

Video and audio streaming services, which includes viewing of "real-time" television programs using 3G phones will, cost 15 pesos for every 30 minutes based on a running time that starts when a subscriber clicks on a streaming link regardless of the number of videos viewed.

Aside from the access charge, there will be a separate fee for content.

Smart 3G subscribers can watch GMA Network and ABS-CBN television live via video streaming. Subscription fee for each network is 20 pesos per day. 3G streaming of audio and video clips will be charged 5 pesos per "hit."

Accessing streaming movie trailers, live traffic and summer hotspots cameras and music videos will remain free of charge.

Multimedia messaging rates or MMS for Smart 3G subscribers will cost 1 peso per message for subscribers sending to fellow Smart subscribers and 2 pesos per MMS for Smart to other subscribers using other operators. Prior to this, the rate for MMS was 5 pesos per message.

Internet browsing using 3G phones will cost 10 pesos for every 30 minutes, no matter if one is using GPRS or 3G. This cost is also regardless of the file size downloaded.

Smart said the charge applies to browsing Internet sites outside of the free Smart WAP site whether connected via GPRS or 3G.

For Smart 3G content such as video clips, ring tones, visual ringers, and games, the introductory rates range from 20 pesos for a video clip download to 50 pesos for a full music track and a premium game. Downloading of preview clips will be free of charge.

For post-paid subscribers, all introductory 3G rates are part of their consumable plans.

Corporate accounts have the option to avail of the introductory pricing or retain their current data consumption rate based on their contracts.

Smart currently has approximately a quarter of a million subscribers with 3G capable handsets.

"With 800 cellsites covering 119 key cities and municipalities, Smart offers genuine nationwide 3G coverage. We've made the service very affordable to encourage usage. To pave the way for continuous improvement in the service, we've made our 3G network HSDPA-ready" said Napoleon L. Nazareno, president and CEO, SMART.

This is a blatant move to promote the sale of 3G phones. This means that if i browse using my K700 and someone else using a 6680, i'll be charged per kb (more expensive) and the 6680 user on a 30-minute basis, EVEN IF THERE WERE NO 3G SIGNAL IN OUR AREA, ONLY GPRS. Pls correct me if i am wrong. Thanks...

I'm using it now via my k750 and Acer notebook. P10 for 30 minutes is not bad, specially when you're mobile. But now I'm not, ayos pa din.

crowing, noon pa gumagana ang mail client with T68 and beta of Smart's GPRS, I know as I was part of that beta and have worked with Smart on some issues. Anyway, tapos na yan...

Very good rates

Planning to get a Smart Prepaid Sim for 3G services.

sir arnold, K750 gamit nyo? sabi 3G phones lng daw ung rate na P20 for 30mins... so pwede ren pala non 3G phones as long as it can connect via GPRS the same rate applies.

ok gets na po!

Posted by senninha
galing talaga ng smart! dsl is down but it's no big deal since you get to surf on your pc anyway with 3g for P10/30 min. great deal!

Posted by ericharlz

btw, sa video calling that will remain FREE.. meron sila caveat sa smart website saying its for a limited time only...

Posted by ynohtna
well video calling for smart will be free until may 31,06. after that, it will be charged. i dont know about the rates. for now, the P10/30 minutes is a good and better deal than globe's .15c/kilobyte charges.

in the short and long term, i do hope that smart and globe do not end like other 3g operators like Hutchison (under Li ka Shing) which is at a loss because of its big investments in 3g.

paglilinaw lang po... ito bang P10/30mins e right from the time i logged into another wap site other than smart... start na ung rate nya? pano kung nde ko naubos ung 30mins then i stopped... automatic i hafta pay P10 n agad... kasi tumakbo n ung first 30mins ko e? or is it by consumption?

halimbawa pag nag GPRS ako... and didnt finish 30mins lets say mga 20mins lng nagamit ko. magkano rate nun?

Posted by dlreyes
It's a continuos maximum of 30 minutes for a Php 10 peso charge. Rate is Php 10 whether you use 1 second or 30 minutes.

Lesson: Once you are logged on, maximize your 30 minutes usage.

sa palagay nyo ba madami mag 3G sa pilipinas? ngaun nga.. i doubt kung madami ang gumagamit ng GPRS on their GPRS enabled phones e.. other than retrieving/sending MMS.

pero I agree 10php/30mins of GPRS/3G internet connection is a GOOD deal... esp sa mga 3G device..kasi balita ko bilis talaga magsurf pag 3G unit/network gamit. I haven't tried one though

Posted by Ayzba
only thing i dont like about 3G is the fact that alam ni esmi lahat ng adventures ko hehe, isang tawag lang ...(video conf)

peace..

Posted by rockygali

Posted by ericharlz

Posted by baste07
i think the rates are acceptable naman

Posted by bobstarsg

I connect the k750i to the laptop to surf the internet.
Anybody has this experience?

Posted by bugzbunny
3g sa smart napa ka swabe talaga, i enjoyed it very much......at lalo na rin sa internet browsing naka pag surf at chat ako at the same cost like internet cafe's.....

Posted by bongnate
btw guys, internet access using smart promo with gprs phone excludes voice and video streaming.

Posted by steele
It is confirmed that the 10 pesos per 30 minutes rate for Internet Browsing is for both Smart GPRS and Smart 3G

Dahil Smart Tayo

Posted by xspach

Posted by senninha
yup i did that before when my dsl was down but used bluetooth connection.

hi guys! naka setup ba pop3 emails nyo? tanong ko lang sana kung ano outgoing server nyo? im using pldt weroam but it uses a smart 3g sim. i cant send emails through outlook. natawagan ko na customer service hotline nila. thanks.

Posted by xspach
how@senninha? ok lang kaya ang prepaid account? same charges?

Posted by senninha
i paired my phone and my PC via BT, then once paired established a serial port connection.

then start up the SE PC Suite and click on the Mobile Networking Wizard and just follow the directions. pretty simple really.

both SMART postpaid and prepaid use the same rate of P10/30 min

Posted by xspach
ok ah. maraming salamat po sa tulong!

Posted by xspach

Posted by xspach

or dahil walang gprs signal sa area?

BUD TRiFF na ME

Posted by senninha
you have to activate it by texting:

GPRS ON

MMS ON

and

INTERNET ON

to 333
