P990 vs LOOX T830

Bearing in mind the P990 now has a QWERTY keyboard shoved under the screen, I am beginning to like Fujitsu's Loox T830 more and more. It's similar sized, has all matchin features (UTMS/3G, Wifi, 2MP Cam, 0.3 VGA front cam for video calling etc,) and not only that it has GPS built in!!

I know fujitsu are hardly world leaders in the phone market but there PDAs are pretty smart and neat looking and this combines the two.

OK, so it's WM2005 not symbian, but it means easy sync and loads of software. Hmmmm....

** Or see below for the info taken from above links, thanks Upper! **

Any thoughts?

Antenna-less GPS, 3G with video calling, a 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0; Fujitsu Siemens goes all out with the LOOX T800 series.

Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830 hands-on impression

The Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX T830 is an impressively compact yet connectivity-laden device which in addition to GPS also boasts 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well as a row of business-oriented features including a decent thumbboard and a 2 Megapixel camera for video calling. Unfortunately, its display is not only of low resolution but also rather small at 2.4 inches, and as such does not lend itself well to GPS navigation in addition to being somewhat cramped for ordinary use.

Specifications

In what appears to be a solid bid to achieve technological nirvana, Fujitsu Siemens has unveiled its Pocket LOOX T800 series comprised of the T810 and T830 models at the ongoing 3GSM World Congress 2006 fair in Barcelona. Launched as the most capable Windows Mobile 5.0 devices to date, the two integrate antenna-less GPS reception, UMTS based 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 1.1 with host capabilities and a SDIO capable SD/MMC card expansion slot for an unparallelled connectivity setup.

Setting the two devices apart is the omission of a 2.0 Megapixel camera with autofocus in the T810, while both support video calls courtesy of their front-mounted 0.3 Megapixel camera. A touch-sensitive 2.4-inch, 262K colour screen with a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels provides a window to the Pocket PC Edition of Windows Mobile 5.0, propelled by a 416 MHz Intel processor, 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of non-volatile memory. Lastly, Fujitsu Siemens' trademark jog dial also remains present in the T800 series.

Price and availability

Scheduled for availability throughout Europe in July 2006, the Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T800 series will sell from €700 EUR and upwards.

I have a WM5 device - sorry to disappoint but the choice of non-faulty s/w is much smaller than you think

Agreed that there will never be as much decent software as on symbian, but Windows Mobile phone based products are relatively newer. WM5 newer still.

I have used a Dell Axim X51v and XDA Exec both with WM2005 and managed to run all the software I needed such as Marco Polo Navigator/Tom tom, software by SPB, loads of PDA style apps (diary, organisers, expenses), games such as BeJewled, not to mention all the Pocket MS software, like Word/Excel, Adobe Reader ,Opera Browser and AAC/MP3/MP4 players etc.

Have even managed to get emulators running as well.

The Loox is more suited perhaps to business users, in a PDA/Phone/Email/Blackberry way, with an occasional wish to play the odd game, or solitaire and such like.

But yes I would miss Symbian, and definitely miss Sman!!

Still not sure... I'm tempted, but can only have one, and on contract. And the Loox is heading for a July release...

Does anybody know which networks the t830 will be out on because I've been having this debate with myself at the moment.

Also from an experienced symbian user having never touched a windows phone what are the disadvantages???

My experience is the WM5 devices are really PDAs with phone functionality and Symbian devices are usually phones with PDA functions added-on. So if you expect to have all the main BT profiles, profiles management, superb call quality, good battery life, etc you may be disappointed with some WM5 devices.

Buddy, keep in mind, Symbian is very splitted among different platforms and even worse a new, better but incompatible version has just been released. The power of symbian is mainly in easy battery and Mhz saving implementation. Nokia is the powerhouse behind symbian and even nokia has 3+ platforms. Sonyericsson is really tiny when it comes to smart phones. Last time they really released a decent symbian cell was ways back in '04. On the other hand the WM5 is slowly improving and more applications, usefull and otherwise, are getting released.I love symbian but have to say WM5 is slowly stealing the show. It will be interesting to see how is going to turn out - I am sure Nokia won't go down that easy.As for the other symbian implementations - I don't think will ever rise more then a few inches . Greetings from South Africa. Mario :)

This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

Please note that WM5 for PPC apps and WM5 for Smartphone are different, so even with WM5 you do have two types of user interface. For Symbian you have Series 60/90 and UIQ. Series 80 will probably be subsumed into Series 60/90.

Yes, comes with a flattish stylus like the HTC universal (xda exec).

Hi!

I know I bore the hell out of some people with this, but I will ask anyway!

I know little about Symbian, and I am also interested in these two phone/PDA's.

So I want to put Japanese input software on, so I can send and receive emails in Japanese. Not bothered with dictionary apps, just need to be able to read in the display and reply in Japanese.

For Windows Mobile, it seems to be quite a task...

But I know little about Symbian. That's my next job, to research anf try to find applications.

But any pointers here would be helpful! ....

Gotta have great screen on a business phone and USB2.0 for fast transfer rates. And my P900 even has a 3" screen. That phone would not be for me.
