Well I decided to go with T-Mobile.
The only reason I was with three was for their minutes and now that T-Mobile gives me 1200+ mins for 35 pounds, screw useless 3G.

Sadly they didn't have any in stock today (promised tomorrow it'd be sent out).

Luckily it comes with SatNav as well so that'll be VERY usefull for me.

@Masseur,
What do you use yours for?
And what apps do you recommend.
I've got spb pocket, and arabizer already.

edit:
Turned this into a question and answer thread.

Cool! Congrats!

this IS becoming a popular device, and deservedly so.

well, with SPB plus (I assume thats what you mean) you get a great utility for which I mostly use the ability to have multiple pocket internet explorer windows so thats a good start.

be sure to get the latest free avantgo version (free membership required) for great offline reading

for even greater flexibility in single handed use in keyboard closed mode I definitly recommend the free smartskey utility

the built in file explorer is good but Resco file explorer is much better and includes a registry editor and other useful applications

SuperSnap is a great, and not expensive, screen capture utility that I use ALOT, especially for giving examples on here and also for my k-jam vs jasjar review

definitly the free TCPMP media player is a MUST. I use this for watching videos and I use Pocket DVD studio to rip from DVD and encode for windows mobile

I also use Tube2 with various cities loaded but there is an equally useful, though less graphical, freeware program called metro available

Finally (for now), if you use Microsoft Autoroute on your PC then go back to the install disk and install pocket streets from it which is a great little program for windows mobile. You can make your own maps by selecting areas from autoroute and/or load up the pre-made maps available on the disk such as London East and London West and many others

thanks very much Masseur, indeed very important and usefull stuff to know.
I used to have PDA's you see and always wanted to use them to keep organized. However I was too tired of losing everything when the battery went dead, the size, and didn't want to carry so much.

I then bought into the P-Series and wanted to wait for the P990 but with their continuous delays, I've given up and decided to take T-Mobiles great offer.

You mentioned auto-route, but I don't think I'll need it if I have co pilot, however the TUBE2 is indeed VERY usefull! Thank you very much for the info.

amnesia who did you get your contract through?

Posted by masseur
one advantage of the windows mobile 5 standard is that all memory content must be retained when the battery goes flat, and a few people here have commented how happy they are about that!

previously (windows mobile 2003 SE and before) you had to rely on a backup battery to maintain the memory contents but that tended to have a very short life

Posted by amnesia
@axxxr, I took it direct from T-Mobile via a manager friend.

Posted by below24
I cant get one from t-mobile, out of stock soo irritating!

Posted by amnesia
the store in my town said that they'd bring some in tomorrow, the telemarket also said tomorrow is the delivery day for their new stock.

Posted by below24
Is this from the warehouse?

I dont understand how they can run out of stock!

i want my new toy

Posted by amnesia
apparantely their website was supposed to not accept any more Vario orders, but there's a glitch, so many have been placing orders.

I want mine too

Posted by below24
Im gonna get one sent from london if they have any stock!

So fingas crossed

Posted by REO
@Amnesia

Go for it, you will not regret it. I am a diehard fan as well, however I've waited too long. I needed something with WIFI and great capabilities.

The K Jam is awesome. is in danger of losing their high end phone loyalist due late launches and demand for more perks on phones.

I'm really liking HTC and I never thought I would like anything else besides Hmmmmmm.......... Food for thought Hope someone in is reading.

Posted by below24
@masseur,

You have lots of people interested in it, T-Mobile's warehouse is out of stock!

yeah, so has been mentioned a few times, but there are a few places to get the i-mate variant on a t-mobile contract... for those that are really desperate now

Posted by xdavex
Isn't it out on O2 aswell ?

Posted by below24
Maybe, but some people have upgrades, like me...

Posted by scottt
Yup is out as the xda mini s on o2, i had a vario myself for a month or so , really regret getting rid to be honest.

Posted by amnesia
it doesn't come with a memory card, but if you get it with copilot, the copilot sd card has 256mb.

T-Mobile are out of stock but restock weekly. I grabbed the last one thankfully.

I went with their flext50 plan, around 1400 mins a month for 37 pounds, free vario, free copilot and a big smile

Installing apps right now.

It comes with a screen protector which is a nice touch, but it's wierd, its bumpy and makes the screen look crapp...

Posted by below24
Ahh ok cheers, i will deffinately get a screen protector, of my very own!

Posted by amnesia
@masseur, is there any recommended app that can lock specific folders.

Posted by masseur
no, sorry, thats not something I have had a need for

there seems to be a few on pocketgear so take a look there are try-before-you-buy! (and let us know if you come up with something)

Posted by below24
Yess i got my Vario. Will have to wait to get it sent from london though! Ahh how i hate waiting for things!

Posted by amnesia
sweet

Posted by below24
So come on lets see some pics, youve had a while with it, what would you say, besides the keyboard...

Posted by REO
@Amnesia

Isn't that WIFI awesome? I was in starbucks the other day, downloaded all my email, surfed for awhile and then went to work.

I don't use screen covers, they make it look somewhat ugly and makes the stylus ger stuck at times. I've had a Palm PDA for 3 years without screen protection and looks like new.

Here are some themes to get you started

so far I've had to reset 3 times. I guess I multitask too much.
First time it froze while trying to turn bluetooth on.
Second time it froze when I tried to stop Pocket MSN from auto activating the GPRS (it's annoying as hell so i had to remove pocket msn from my today screen)
Third time it froze when I tried to uninstall PocketMate2006

one thing to note is that it's a bit slow, my H5550 iPaq was faster thats for sure. Looking at some older reviews this is one of the slowest, but they blame it on Windows Mobile 5.

The keyboard is easy to type with, the only time the phone feels chunky is when your holding it up to your ear.

The camera doesn't do well indoors.
It has an 'extend' option which then shows me as having 2megapixels.

Thats about it for now.

Posted by masseur
really? I have heard similar stories of soft resets with the branded versions but I soft reset maybe once a week and rarely because it hangs, mostly I do it because thats what I used to do with my old ipaqs etc.

does your t-mobile version have the AKU2 yet? although I was happy with performance with the original firmware this update has definitly made a noticeable improvement

Posted by amnesia
I'm unsure, what is AKU2?
And I would assume it does since it's brand new.

edit: a bit of research showed me that it's basically an update.
However T-Mobile have pushed their release of AKU to july...

Another site said that the iMate AKU2 rom would work on the Vario however I'd lose T-Mobile specific applications.

What app would I be losing? Do you know if I can back them up or re-install them later (Vario doesn't come with a sim with apps)

What will I gain and lose system wise?

Do you know where I can download it (since I need to be an iMate member but I dont have an imate)

Finally, does anyone know where I can unlock the device.

anybody know what a good free registry editor is?

Posted by amnesia
just a few pics as promised of the K-Jam

Posted by amnesia

Posted by below24
Cheers, i cant wait...

Posted by fatreg
@ amnesia. loads of free wm5 reg editors out there, as for the AKU2 update, it basically enabled the device to use push email and also support AD2P (stereo bluetooth)

fatreg

Posted by amnesia
I'm found a few but they dont allow me to export only import reg edits.

As for the AKU2 I discovered that, and so I installed Qtek's ROM (although I don't even use Push Email)

The Hotmail integration is enough.

Some pics of my new toy

whats that E at the top REO?

didnt think edge was in the US?

fatreg

Posted by amnesia
America does have Edge.

I like that version of the K-Jam's back and the keyboard, but I prefer the K-Jam's front.

Posted by REO
@Fatreg

Yes, EDGE is available on the Cingular network.

@Amnesia

I totally agree with your assesment on the K Jams cosmetics.

The original front looks stealthy IMO.

Posted by upper
I have noticed that k-jam is No longer on t-mobile.co.uk web site, does this means the HTC Hermes will be replacing it very very soon ?

Posted by zootzoot
I phoned tmobile on friday 31/03/06 for a mda vario and they said they havnt any stock. thats why it isnt on there website.

mmm, i see, but that sounds silly to remove the pics from the website just because its out of stock, i mean on other websites they just add the word "out of stock" next to its product. They shouldnt remove the pics, because some people will just think that they dont sell them anymore.

Posted by masseur
o2 do the same, if a phone is out of stock then it doesn't appear on their pages

greetings from oz!
