Mobile phones will deal a final blow to makers of music devices and video camcorders,having already hit the photo industry, a senior executive at handset maker Nokia told the Financial Times newspaper.

it won't end the production of dedicated devices. There will always be a need for dedicated devices of all sorts, but what phones will do is generally replace low end use. For example low end digital phones will be replaced by cams in phones, low capacity music players will be replaced by mp3 capable phones. etc.
The high end in dedicated devices will always exist, the low end will be mostly replaced with phones (but not completely), and the mid range will be about 50/50, IMHO.

Ironically, i think capacity and size won't be the main problems. It's the battery life that will pose as the main problem in all-in-one devices. Not enough effort has been put into development of better batteries, in my opinion. That's the problem with tech toys, functions keep increasing, keep getting better, but the source of power seems to be stagnant. Sigh...

I agree with deluded. Storage capacity has been nailed with flash memory, etc. Convergence technology, really knows no bounds (W950), but battery life/size is the biggest hurdle, I think. Small multimedia devices are limited ultimately by the battery size, for them to be a true all in one alternative. Although great strides are being made.

When we do talk about battery life, I guess it wouldn't hurt ANY of the manufacturers to bump up the capacity of their batteries. Although I was reading the mobile-review review on the W300 and Eldar said that the battery life was 27 hours! That was with the supplied headphones at full volume and just leaving the phone to play until it decided to stop. I guess that battery issue was sorted.

Battery life? May friend's IPOD NANO only last about 4 hours of music...2 hours if you're tinkering it. My W550i lasted about 12 hours of continue music...plus occasionally using other functions as well (SMS and GAMES).

Phone batteries are much hardier (and bigger and heavier) than the batteries that fit in small mp3 players.
Isn't the W800 30 hours audio on flight mode? But the problem is getting high capacity batteries into such small devices as MP3 players.
Traditional battery technology is improving, but it may be that alternative technology is able to meet the demand better for example fuel cells.

Um, I just know that CD players are dieing out.
imaginarly floating music signs. Just take it out of the air and there is a live performance infront of u. The Ipod Imaginary. O_O?! Music never dies so there will always be devices around. Just, Supply will jump and demand will go low because everyone will have what they need. But if music devices die out. Music in a cellphone can always survive as one of the needed things like a camera.

Another half-assed comment from some spokesperson. Unless they can make a navigation interface to rival my iPod, dream on....
and capacity wise... definitely not in 6-12months will there be any serious threat to the portable music player market

Mobiles with music players and cameras are hampering the sales of dedicated devices, people question that do they really need an Ipod when their phones is serving the exact same purpose, same with low end digital cameras, so as soon as customers show hesitation in buying a product there will be some worries for the dedicated parties.
i doubt the cam will ever be surpassed by mobile device.... mp3's well I definately see that happening!!

I agree that battery are the main issue, its correct that about 15 hours of listening music is better than most of the player but then phone lose its main functionality

a fine example of how Mobile phone covergence with other digital devices and later restructure the respective industry will be on camera.
When we start seeing camera phone reach 2 megapixel with autofocus. (Some in japan even have optical zoom)
what happen....the joint of Konica Minolta quite production of low end digital camera.
Early this yr....they sell all the camera business to Sony. both player who is famous for their camera stop making camera.
before this....we have PDA being wipe out by Smartphone
So it just won't take a long time for mobile phone to take a hard hit on those mentioned industry.

lol, so nokia are saying that they are goign to take down the ipod which is probally one of the laregest brands in the world, so large exam boards have even addressed it seperatly in their things not allowed in exams. LOL
