There is absolutely no question the best TFT flat panel displays are made by Sony. They have some new X-series models that are awsome. They have the best image quality of any displays I've seen. Very similar to the Sony WEGA TV's.

i agree wiv goldsmin. the new sony x-series r the best, ive seen it and used it, amazin quality and style
Posted by Eamonn
Do the sony ones also have a TV tuner?
Posted by decoy7
I have 2 NEC 18's and they're fine, most(but not all) tft panels are made by the same people so the only difference is who packages them. budget is the main concern as price differences are drastic among similiar size screens.

In my opinion i think the Eizo Flat screen is the best in terms of picture quality...Plus its the only flat screen that comes with 3yrs on site warranty at where im staying.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. I currently have my eyes on the SAMSUNG SYNC MASTER 17" LCD/TV MONITOR-170MP. Do you think that the TV would work in Europe? We also use PAL over here but a person told me that there are 2 types of PAL. Is that true?
Thanks

Sony X-Series - tried and true! I use it with a PCI TV tuner card... DEAD CHEAP!!! Decoy7: You sure? As I find SONY produces the sharpest images when compared side by side with 3 other brands... LG Samsung and i forgot the 3rd 1... :P

Sony is the best one I guess but it is very costly. I have two NEC 1525x 17" monitors and one 21" Sony. Both are good but you can notice the clarity better in Sony. If you want reasonably priced ones, then I suggest NEC series. They are good.

I think Sony makes some of the best LCD and CRT displays... they also make some of the most expensive ones!
Posted by decoy7
no question Sony make some of the best...just be careful your not spending money on a specific brand and getting the same screen that would be found in anothers casing for less money...although this is more common with lower end models in the 15 inch size category.
Eizo make good LCD monitors but also you'll find that some of their CRT monitors actually have the same Trinitron tubes found in Sony's...whoever you buy from make sure you see the monitor working at point of purchase as some manufacturers have a specific number of missing pixels per screen that is deemed acceptable...due to the way some TFT screens are manufactured missing pixels are a reality.

ummm that looks quite nice. The fact that it doesn't have a built in TV tuner is putting me off. Maybe I should waith until they make one?
Posted by ShawO
a TV tuner inside the monitor?
A backyard chinese factory = yes
Sony = no
They will surely market their little wegas
ohya... btw its an 18" and i no longer have a hand and a leg
Posted by Eamonn
Yes the Samsung I was talking about earlier on had a built in TV tuner. Here's it's pic:

@ejasim:
I have a Samsung TFT Screen and I had no problems in 3 years. (Only 1 deadpixel) And a friend of mine 2 years and no problems.
But my father has a sony one and the screen has 5 dead pixels in 2 years. And my girlfriend also has a Sony TFT screen and in 1 year (4 deadpixels)
So I finally prefer a Samsung.
(In my pint of view I prefer a DVI connector on the screen instead of TV tuner due to you can buy a TV tuner separately and shure it will be better)
Yours faithfully,

Thanks for that. Can you tell me wxactly what a DVI connector is?
Thanks
Posted by ShawO
I think its sort of like s-video in?
Posted by EddWo
A DVI connector is a digital interface between the pc and the flatpanel, this is to stop the image being converted to an analogue signal to travel through a standard vga cable an back to digital inside the display. It should provide a better image quality. You have to have a graphics card with a dvi port to be able to use it.

Tip don't buy compaq we get through about one flat screen every 10 months at work (they have to be switched on 24/7)

Why?

A DVI Connector is a digital interface for the screen connection.
I mean if you have a graphic card with DVI connector, the image will be 100% digital (More sharp, more bright, more "vivid color")
[for example in games as Quake or Mohaa, the image in TFT screens is like "ghosted" in dark environments, but with the DVI conector this is soolved because the digital inferface]
And in the case that you haven't a graphic card with DVI conector, the screen will automatically transfer to digital image, it will not be as good as the other but the image will be improved.
I hope this info helps you!
Yours faithfully,
NetGuy2

I have a Planar PV174 LCD monitor (17.4") it has both dvi and analog connectors and it works pretty well. I have compated it to a sony 17" my uncle has and the Planar seens to have much better color and viewing angle. The Planar uses MVA technology opposed to the TN+Film that most other monitors use. It does ghost a bit in games, but so do most if not all lcd monitors.
Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/display/index.html to read about some LCD monitors.

ShawO: My contacts sometimes do mess up when I'm on the CRT monitor. I'm hoping that a TFT monitor will prevent this...
johnlemvp: Thanks m8 for that link
