Memory Stick Pro DUO limit in W800i?

What's the limit of memory stick size I can fit into my W800i? I have read conflicting reports everywhere. GSMArena says 1GB, Mobile-Review says to quote them: "cards up to 2 GB now, the next year promises 4 GB ones". The phones official whitepaper with specs for developers available at:

http://developer.sonyericsson.com/getDocument.do?docId=74305

and published in May2005 says: "Memory Stick PRO Duo™ supports up to 4 GB memory capacity."

Does that mean Memory Stick PRO Duo cannot be made in sizes more than 4GB or my phone won't have the processing power enough to handle 4GB?

Is the size of the Memory Stick i can fit in limited by my phone's processing power or I can put in whatever is available in the market as long as its Memory Stick Pro Duo?

I really would appreciate any clarifications for my doubts. Thanks

the w800 will take whatever size card you put in it. some places say 1gb but that is only because 1gb was the only available card at the time. when the 4 and 8gb cards are released the w800 will take them

the phone will take what ever MSD you put in it, a 4gb one will soon be coming out, and perhaps after a 6gb and so on... k750 as well, also other SE top phones that accept them...

no, no 6gb lol. they increase by doubling capacity (power of 2)

4gb and 8gb are currently announced and there is no reason to suspect they won't work with al current SE phones (except P910)

I'm using a 2GB MSD with my w800i without any problem. I also agree that w800i will take the 4 & 8 GB MSD that will be released soon.

Thank you everyone for clearing my doubts and answering my question. I am really relieved that I can expand my memory to whatever is available in the market. The second obvious question is as the memory stick size increases, does it affect the performance of the phone? I mean does it slow down the interface and file processing power of the phone?

@bomba, Memory Stick Pro's have a "THEORETICAL" limit of 32gb... So we have a long way to go...

@masseur, why won't the 4/8gb mspd work with the p910?
@bomb, i think the more free memory the faster the speed of the phone. some1 correct me if i'm wrong.
btw, an 8gb mspd would probably cost more than a w800.

here is some threads where I and others have discussed that

in on of those threads, this one, I posted an image of a portion of the white paper covering that topic

@masseur, ty. will check out the links once i'm back indoors.
am i right in thinking that the more free memory the faster the speed of the phone?

Thanks whizkid for the thread but it still doesn't answer mine and ayk's question about increase in size of memory stick affecting the phone's speed.

@ayk: This is where I would disagree with you. I think, an increase in size will reduce the phone's speed as is seen in the Nokia's!

anybody using 4GB MS Duo on SE W900i & is it possible ?

Posted by thegreatone
since the w900 is a newer model than the w800 i guess you can use a 4 gig m/s duo

with the latest firmware.. 2~4gb are supported AFAIK

Tomorow I'm going to buy myself a brand new Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo 1GB. So currently I'm running R1BC002 on my W800. Should it work fine or not with this firmware. Because I have read that some phones (depensing on the firmware) couldn't write/read more than 700MB data written on the memory stick

thanks

Ive got a 4GB Sony Duo stick in my K750I & its fine, Had a 2GB before & filled that up no proiblem.

Just make sure is a genuine stick & not a fake / copy because theres lots of them around.

Only problem with large memory sticks is the phone can take up to a minute to fire up from a cold start, The bigger the stick the longer the phone takes to start up.
