I'm on Orange in the UK and the further you go into a typical 12 month contract the more heavily a phone upgrade is subsidised.
My question is if you simply allow your contract to continue beyond the 12 months does this subsidy continue to grow ?
The dilemma..... I own a P910 and as I am now at the end of my contract could upgrade to a W800 FOC.
I actually want a P990 but this will not be available for months. So I have 2 choices:
A) Get my FOC W800, and sell both that and the P910 to finance an expensive upgrade when the P990 is released.
B) Wait until the P990 is released, and finance that by selling my P910 and using my upgrade "credit".
I'd appreciate any comments.

I'm assuming that FOC means free on contract? (helps for those who dont know) .
From my experience it's simple, move your contract to Pay as you go, then get a new contract and port your number, it's often the case that a new contract is cheaper than an upgrade.
Now when it comes to finding good deals, you could always check my sig.

Letting a contract run and run doesnt normally mean that your upgrade gets better.
I normally ask for my PAC code at the end of the 12 months. They will often get you a better upgrade if you tell them that you are leaving them. If they cant match a new deal then take the PAC code to another network with a better deal.

The deal aint that bad.
It averages out at £22.50/m thats for 200mins XNET and 500 texts.
But its the issue over the upgrade that I'm undecided about. Basically grab sommat now free, or wait God only knows how long for the phone I really want.

that deal will end after 18 months unless you are on a sepcial deal with retentions?
i presume you got yout tariff from either the web or direct sales?
after 18 months you will end up on just 200 mins.
might be better off disconnectiing and reconnecting if your number is not essential.

Take the upgrade and once's the P990 comes out sell the p910 and w800i to fund your purchase of the p990?

upgrade fees atm have just undergone a rethink and if your within 6 monts of upgrading its like £300. plus the price of a P990i.
Id say get ya tariff sorted and just hang on in there with your P910i.

I wouldn't imagine the p990 will be cheap if taking a new contract on one. Your either have to pay more for the handset if wanting cheap line rental or pay more line rental and get the p990 cheap.
As we dont know when the p900 will be here, i would upgade now and then sell both to finace for the p990 when the time comes.

2 - 1 in favour of grabbing the upgrade so far

I would grab the upgrade.

Depends how much you spend. My monthly bill is between £400-700 a months, so Orange tend to allow me to upgrade free every 4 months or so. I have just upgraded to the Pebl and should have only a £50 or so upgrade fee by the time the P990 is out.

I know it should depend on my monthly spend but i'm not sure it makes that much difference.
I've been on Orange since January 2003. Started with a P800 then went through the P series at 12 month intervals. Apart from my initial sign up, which was £50/m for 6 month, I've never been on a tariff higher than £30/m and have never paid for a phone yet.
As for your spend.......... is it the Premium rate numbers ?
Oh........ decided by the way.....
New W800 its will be.....
thanks for the various PMs promoting your offers people, but for 200+ mins XNET with 500 texts.... I can't see a better offer than Orange Direct for £270pa on a 12 month contract.

Hi, I'm in a bit of a predicament. I'm on o2 online and have been for over two years. My 12 month contract expired end of oct but i haven't upgraded yet (was waiting for w900i but that's another story).
If i upgrade anytime soon will the new 12 month contract run up to the same date again (ie, oct 06) ?
Or will they want to start a new 12 months from date of upgrade (say feb 06) ?
Thanks

i wudnt upgrade. i wud get new contract, they are some amazin contracts, especially free ones with 12 months free line rental. So you can basically get a Moto SLVR for free
Posted by jcwhite_uk
CPW are doing the Moto L6 free with a free PSP at the minute. I doubt that you would get that on an upgrade.
Posted by max99
from another site you can get pink, blue or black v3 razr free with free psp , and Moto Slvr for free with free psp, nokia 6111 with free psp
Posted by jcwhite_uk
cpw also do the L6 free on a 12 month contract with 12 months free line rental. Thats free phone and nothing to pay on line rental.

What do you guys estimate the P990 to go for?
Def not more than the jasjar?

Come on people, someone must know this simple answer.
Posted by max99
not sure bout the answer to be fair, probz depends on stores, network , person who does the upgrade etc
Posted by jcwhite_uk
When you upgrade you sign up for another 12 months (or 18 in some cases) from the date that you upgrade NOT when your contract hit its year.
Posted by mike03
Ah, Rubbish.
I hoped that wasn't going to be the case
Posted by max99
answer: get a nw better cheaper contract with a brand new phone u want and sinmply transfer old number if u want it
Posted by mike03
yeah that's what i'm gona do, just a shame cos i've wasted almost 6 months on a contract and not got an upgrade

In my experience the best deal is around about the time you "come out of commitment" the value of your custom does not seem to go up much after that point, best advice ask for Pac code 2 weeks before commitment runs out they will normaly fall over backwards to keep you on board at that point (I got £25 per monh knocked off my rental for 12 months and an interest free deal on a handset over 12 months at my last last upgrade and they were adamant that there could be no free P910i for me on Vodafone when i first asked!)
However IMHO the P990 will not be a FOC phone initialy unless you are a massive volume user by that I mean well in excess of £100ex vat a month Vodafone are getting very insistant thay will no longer offer premium devices at very low cost and I spend a lot with them each month!

Just to stop any confusion it is PAC code. If you ask for a PUK code they will give you the code to unlock your sim if you type in the sim pin code wrong too many times.
