Right-click on the drive in 'My Compter', select 'properties', click on the 'tools' tab and press the 'Check Now' button under 'Error Checking'. Make sure that you tick both checkboxes then click 'Start'.

Then cross your fingers and toes, say a few prayers and hope for the best

i dont have a tools tab?

Errr... You should have!

Right click on 'my computer', select properties, then the hardware tab, then device manager and make sure it hasn't got a cross or exclaimation mark next to it.

nope, and no crosses either

Ok, does it show up in disk management? Right click my computer, click 'manage', double click on 'storage' and then 'disk management'

Does it show up in there at all and if it does, does it say it's formatted, healthy, active or whatever?

Try a free data recovery program. Just look on google and try that

What, so you can get the error checking tab but nothing happens when you try to select it?

It's a good sign that windows is seeing the device as healthy anyway. It might be worth trying to do the error checking thing on a different PC if you can. Other than that, there's a load of data recovery software that you can download here:

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Search/data_recovery.html

I haven't tried any of them so be VERY carefull. The golden rule with data recovery is to use the device as little as possible until you find a promising looking tool or utility. If the data is very, very important you'd probably be better off sending it to a specialist company like http://www.disklabs.com/ rather than trying to do it yourself.
