Ipod nano help required!

Here's one for the Ipod fans...

A customer of mine came in with a windows XP laptop and an Ipod nano. When he first installed the drivers, itunes and update program everything worked fine, but after ripping some CDs (I dont know what he used for this), Itunes no longer recognises that the Ipod is attached.

The update software recognises that the ipod is attached, as does windows, but the 'ipod' tab in Itunes' preferences says 'no ipod attached'

I've done all of the obvious things, uninstall Itunes and reinstall a newer version etc. as well as updating the ipod's firmware and trying all of the suggestions on the Apple site with no joy.

Any ideas?

make sure his lappy is SP2?

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, it's SP2. It's got to be a registry issue, I'll probably end up having to manually remove all references to the device and software from the registry and then reinstalling but frankly I don't fancy doing that!

Just wondering if anyone's seen this problem before and has a handy fix?

this is a little the same... but i once had a printer that did the same... and in the regestey (i googled alot) found that something was set at 00 00 00 01 when it needed to be 00 00 00 00 and it fixed it. (i knwo its not any help hahahaha, but i can relate...) just get DEEP into google is all i can say :-\

ive never known of this program before, I think i have some things that can help.

make sure he is not using a firewire cable, these dont work with the ipod nano
the latest version of itunes was only released today - make sure its the latest
uninstall itunes, also check the programs for any ipod related software thats no itunes related and remove it, then reinstall itunes.

if all else fails try formating the ipods drive, (im sure you know how to do this)

check the bottom of the nano for any dirt etc in the plug
and also if you can try a differnt usb slot and usb cable as these can go faulty

try those and see what happens

Thanks for all of the suggestions, but I'm afraid I've done all of those The ipod is back to factory settings with the latest software, it conects via USB and it works perfectly on another pc meaning that the ipod and cable must be fine

It's Itunes that's at fault, as I said the updating software sees the ipod and works fine, it's just bloody itunes

try starting the pc up with the ipod already connected and switched on...... if that doesnt work try unconnecting the ipod and starting the pc up before connecting it.... i know this is really simple but it happened to mine and it was simly because of the mother board i had to have my nano 'on' and 'connected' when i start up my pc...

hope this helps mate
