not sure anyone else will agree with me but i for one and a bit tired of the walkman brand now when are we going to see an update or the k750 and s700 with out all the orange branding some peolpe want a top class phone as a phone not a walkman

Posted by RyaN
i think there'll be a point soon when se revert away from the w series and make something different as well, but the brand is still hot so why change?

@ max i think the activity button is on the far right hand side and the walkman button on the left

Posted by SL33PYH34D
Not quite sure why SE have recently decided to take a step backwards and remove the lens covers from the cameras which they introduced on the K750i/W800i. As The lenses get better on these camera phones a cover will be even more important than it is now.
If the lens is simply recessed further back to "protect it" like on the K700i then this is even worse as it is almost impossible to clean.

Posted by jcwhite_uk
One thing that I have noticed about the back is that the Camera, light, speaker and aerial connector all seem to be in the same position as on the K750i and W800i. I think that the PCB's are the same but with a different keyboard membrane.

Full Press release:
Sony Ericsson Launches Stylish W810 Walkman® Phone - New Quad-band Edge Walkman Phone Delivers High-Quality Music experience with Two Mega-pixel AutoFocus Camera and Removable Memory
04 January 2006

LAS VEGAS, CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (January 4, 2006) – Sony Ericsson today announced the latest addition to its line-up of Walkman-branded mobile music phones to further enhance the consumer’s mobile music experience, the sophisticated, Satin Black W810. The Sony Ericsson W810 is a Quad-band EDGE phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and enables users to transfer their legacy CD collection or access operator music download services, while staying connected to friends, family and business colleagues anywhere in the world.

The Sony Ericsson W810 offers the latest in mobile multi-media functionality by taking advantage of high speed data downloads; listen to hours of music, capture and send high-resolution mega pixel images, access the Internet and stay connected through instant messaging or email. The latest Walkman phone comes with a 512MB removable Memory Stick, which can be upgraded to 2GB currently available in retail outlets, allowing consumers to store a wealth of music tracks, photos, video and other multimedia files on the phone.

Extending the highly acclaimed Sony Ericsson Walkman phone line-up, the stylish black with orange trim W810 advances the mobile music experience by seamlessly blending together entertainment and advanced mobile phone technology to offer a truly credible digital music experience supporting industry standard MP3 and AAC music file formats. The phone comes complete with quality HPM-70 stereo headphones which feature a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack for personal customization.

Consumers can easily and quickly load music to the phone; either uploading their legacy CD collection onto the W810 from a PC via USB 2.0 using the provided Disc2Phone music management software, or by purchasing new music from operator specific over-the-air download services. This enclosed PC software makes it easy to sort, browse and transfer files on the 512 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo™, which provides capacity for approximately 150 music tracks – the equivalent of around 15 full length CDs.

Enjoying music on the Sony Ericsson W810 Walkman phone is extremely simple because a dedicated Walkman button quickly pulls up the music menu regardless of what other application on the phone is in use. Positioned just below the phone’s screen you can find all the most common music controls needed (Play/Pause/Stop/Skip Track/Volume) allowing users to move easily between tracks or adjust the volume on the speaker or headphones. Engaging Mega Bass™ improves the sound experience when listening to music through the external speaker or the high quality headphones provided.

“Since the launch of the W800 flagship Walkman phone in August last year, consumers across the world have been embracing the concept of the mobile phone as a credible digital music player, and enjoying high quality music anywhere, anytime without having to carry a dedicated music device. Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones are redefining how consumers listen and enjoy music, and the W810 strengthens our music phone line-up with the addition of dedicated music buttons on the front of the phone and an expanded choice of how users upload music to the phone” said Miles Flint, president for Sony Ericsson.

The Sony Ericsson W810 is also a great imaging device enabling users to capture great still pictures and video featuring an integrated high-quality 2 mega pixel, auto-focus camera with photo light, and easily recognisable digital still camera interface.

As with other members of the Walkman phone family, music automatically pauses when an incoming call is received and begins playing again when the call ends. The phone can also operate in a music-only mode for those occasions when the phone function must be disengaged, such as during air travel.

The W810 is equipped with EDGE Class 10 technology, to allow quick and easy data transfers and Internet access, and Bluetooth™ Wireless technology for connectivity with Bluetooth handsfree headsets and sharing data with other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

The Sony Ericsson W810 is a Quad-band EDGE phone available in Satin Black and starts shipping globally Q1 2006

W810i - Quad Band EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz for Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Americas

hhmm i really dunno.. is SE being silly or its just me?

its too early to say... not a very good marketing strategy.

compared to w800, less phone memory of 20mb. removed the FM radio. from the looks of it... forgive me saying this... they cannot put an onboard FM tuner on that HPM. i doubt! and still supply the 512mb MSD.

just doesnt make sense... no official press release..
maybe this one is still on the drawing board... and just like the one sez here that... the artist of this phone really did gud with photoshop. or whatever software he's using.

i choose to be skeptical with this one...

EDIT: and boy the MP on the camera stays at 2? if SE techies are clever enuff then theyll prolly conjunct this item with the soon to be released microdrive together with updated camera gadget watchammacallit that has been developing around tha corner.
hhmm still dont get it... any guy close or a friend of an SE consultant can give a very good reason why the company is doing this? im all ears!

Somewhere, sometime tonight the infamous Max_Wedge breaks a sweat, in panick that SE is beginning to support EDGE more than ever before. Does he worry that UMTS wont get further advancements? Only the sweat off his brow can tell.

JK man had to poke fun at you > as even YOU didnt see this coming. After all our EDGE battles you've done well but for once I'm glad your wrong. EDGE which is Ironic because I've been preaching that it has a use for years and now that I no longer have unlimited data I have no use for it. So it'll make the sudden price drop in the K750 more worthwhile for me!!

Good Job SE, now make a W900i in North American UMTS 1900Mhz band trim with EDGE and you'll be #1 in worldwide sales in no time.!!

W910i anyone?

Posted by rockygali
i still choose to be skeptical...

hehehehe! just teasin mate!

Posted by max_wedge
prom1 one, very funny

I actually never was against edge, I just didn't think SE needed to worry about supporting it. If you notice, they always have one or two models with EDGE, so nothing has changed.

But they have continued adding decent umts support to their range, so it's all good UMTS is being offered by all carriers now in Australia, but EDGE still hasn't had a look in.

I notice that there is definitely no lense cover, big problem for me. But I can see the activity button's now - incorporated into the nav buttons - very neat.

one more thing.. about the Media Button.. why place it on the sides and make another one on the center... looks redundant to me.

but the bowling-ball skin is good. looks tough to me. hope it wont crackle... does anyone has a copy of the prototype.

you know.. not the studio shots of the phone. but the regular shots.. held by the hand.

Posted by dr_thug
looks cool other than the orange colour here and there...

back looks sxy btw, wats that orange dial next to the speakers on the back side??

Posted by rockygali
yea wots it for? and the walkman button upfront.

hmmm i guess its a short-cut for the flight mode.

That orange dot on the back is for do-do's your taking a pic of to look at to prevent RED-Eye.

@marlonski "Three mini subwoofers perhaps" Man you & me, we i & i on dis here!

With the upcoming purchases of the K750i this Friday, W900i in 3weeks & this beauty shortly after ... I'm officially a SE B-Bwoy again.

Thank you SE!

@Max, cool good eye on no lens cover, but I think with the W900i & now this SE is trying to reduce ownership costs to the end user (also notice in this less memory so its not an upgrade for W800i users; then again possibly). If the initial price is under $600CAN then I'll get this and wait until the W900i drops a another $75-140CAN in price (then give the K750 to my wife) I'm still amazed at the speaker volume in the K700i ... is the K750i similar?

Please all SE fans slap me for even looking at Motorola phones, and forgive my 8-9.5 months going to Nokia. I no longer need a smartphone, I grew up a musician as a kid, and with my new Guitar I now have a reason to listen to music at all times traveling.

Too many threads to read up on all the new features of the menu that SE has been doing.

Just remember kids, portable music is something that Ericsson began with the T39i/T28w MMC attachment long ago, SE just picket up the ball.

Posted by rockygali
you can say that again....

no longer from now.. we'll be seeing walkman 3G phones everywhere.. hehehe (how i wish.. only if the prices drop)

whooopah!

can we say now that SE is on a headstart?

I'm soooo getting it.

Posted by c96sthl
Pls check the official spec

RADIO with RDS IS STILL THERE!!!

http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10376

the only reduction is internal memory

there's a ACCESS NET FRONT WEB BROWSER....HTML access is better

from the look of it...this seem to be an upgrade of W800 instead of a downgrade version since now you have EDGE...quad band (making it a true WORLD phone)

I just wonder with EDGE in place...the phone will have easy access to online music store or video store??? I believe it will...coz sooner or later this is the way to allow operator to squeeze more $ from us....

just to clarify few things.

it still has rds radio same as k750/w800. missunderstanding stems from sentence that it doesnt have radio incorporated in headphones like that in w900.

it does not have less memory, in fact it is the same internal memory as k750/w800.
it has less available memory, due to the firmware size increase to support extra features.

personal note: just hope speakers are of higher quality than those of its dad and mom. doubt it though.

maybe we even see some modding soon as pcb's and covers for it become available.

@REO i KNEW u would love it!!!!

do you think this may have cingular written on it over here? or do you think they will pass this one?

Posted by REO
@EastCoastStar

Hmmmmmm..... Cingular signed a contract with NOKIA and it stipulated to only buy candy bar style phones from NOKIA.

This was some time ago. Maybe that contract is expired. If it is, for sure this will be the sucessor of the S710a they carried until just recently. If they don't carry it.... I will purchase from a cell retailer.

I am very happy with this news. I have great reception, service and plan with Cingular. I would hate to move plans just because of a phone.

Posted by mcrosser
I think that the removal of the lens cover would be justified only with some optical zoom don't you think? but it still looks great

Posted by REO
Optical zoom??????? who said that?????

Don't get me all excited please.......

Posted by kristianm
This announcement of W810 is really torturing me! That greatly improveed design and addition of the activity button and no joystick interface are very hard to resist....

hold yer horses cowboys!

hehehe, im drooling about this gadget!!!

SE knows how to lure fanatics... uummm just not sure if its bug free?!

or maybe its a stunt pulled while all K750 quams about the bugs on the recent firmware.

naaah! pure strategic marketing.... what can i say

Posted by c96sthl
One of the best part on this product is...it manage to suprise us.

Yes it is nothing out of this world like Razr and many other product offer by Steve Jobs

But yet nobody was posting about it before 4th Jan2006...kudos for SE on keeping us suprised.

on the other hand...no one can resist no looking on those leaked picture hehehehe.

Posted by rockygali
NOKIA: "niyeeeaaahh, wots cookin doc?"

SE: *shows W810i flashing its satin black color and full of elegance*

NOKIA: "@#&*#&$)*(@#&!&^%@$(*)(!%*"
*rushes back to the warehouse and back to the old drawing board.*

Does anyone know if this phone is going to record video as well as the w900?

Posted by whizkidd
A very good move from imho...
EDGE is a massive relief and coupled with the Netfront browser this is luring me away from my addiction and sof-corner for smartphones..

HTML browsing was a top priority for me..
Well done

Posted by max_wedge
yes this phone is good, if it weren't for the lack of lense cover I'd be interested. I might still, but I'd really miss the active lense of the K750

Mind you, with 3G coming to Australia big time, If I wasn't worried about a lense cover why not go the W900? So maybe I just stick with the K750 and see what the next few 3G phones form SE are like....

Posted by Aivar
As some people already have said: quad-band + EDGE, it's a good job from SonyEricsson.

Perhaps the successor of K750i will also add UMTS, so there will be first "five"-band mobile phone from SE also. As you know, Nokia already has introduced that kind phones (N80 and E61).

I actually think the orange dot is the cover for an external aerial socket as its in the same place as the one on the w800i.

Posted by wrecked_porsche
Listen up people, do any of you guys know if it has the A2DP profile?

Posted by masseur
I saw that jcwhite_uk posted the press release within the thread but I have now also included it in the opening post so its more visible

still find it strange that were not listed as exhibitors

anyway...

Posted by waja800
man...this is one good looking Phone!

Posted by c96sthl
@Sanj

SE never mentioned tht....so might not have A2D

if you want to know later...maybe you can search using Bluetooth SIG homepage on product...it normally show you what profile it support

BTW this phone seem like an answer from SE to the nokia phone announced last yr....what;s the model number...i can't rmemeber but they have one which is an upgrade to 6230...is it 6233?

But of course W810 lost out in the screen size (QVGA in 6233) plus lack of 3G...but I definitely not suprise the model for CEBIT or 3GSM conf will have something to match 6233 in 3G segment...especially since it is a year since K600 is out....it is time to retire all the phone using old system connector.
