That's right, he genuinely decided to donate his work for the good of mankind.

TBM didn't invent the Internet, He invented the WWW (there is a big difference!)
He was working at CERN at the time, he needed to find a way to consolidate data spread over multiple diferent platforms and present that data in a uniform way that could be accessed by any platform.
He ended up effectively inventing HTML and a crude web browser to display it.
