am looking at getting that..

small question..

why does it have 2 fw400 ports??

am I being dim here?

EDIT: also.. said hdd will be on 24/7 along with my mac...

it'll constantly in use too... reading and writing.. is that going to be an issue? or will it cope with being on 24/7 or do I need to get a hdd with a fan like the western digital my book ones?

Thanks all done!

@fatreg

I've got one of those drives and mine is on 24/7 and used for all my media (iTunes, movies etc.) - never had a problem.

It has 2 Firewire ports so that you can daisy-chain another firewire device off the back of it, so it doesn't actually use up any FW ports.

As well as that drive, I've also got a bus-powered LaCie PocketDrive which I just plug straight in the back of the other LaCie drive. No additional power required.

I think you can daisy-chain up to 255 Firewire devices off one-port.

Posted by fatreg
daisy chain?

so..

I plug the HDD into my mac and then plug my iPod into the other port on the HDD??

if so that is brill!

Looks like I'll be ordering one one of them then!

looks the biz too!

cheers Jools!

Posted by Jools
Yes, exactly. Any firewire device can be plugged straight in the back into the spare firewire port. iPod should be no different.

Posted by fatreg
ahhh excellent..

i like that..

why isn't USB that clever!?

ahh well..

jsut need to find the cheapest place to get one of them then..

Posted by Dale_jeffs
ok. i wouldn't change my imac for the world love it no complaints atal. but the bloody mouses!!!

i've had my mac since about april and i've gone through 2 mouses. 1'st was a wired 1 that came with it. it stopped scrolling down.

then i brought a wireless 1 from luke (not his fault and not complaining to him) and now this 1 wont scroll up! anyone else have this ?

Posted by fatreg
I've been through 6 mighty mice..

I've given up using them

gone back to my trusty microsoft mouse that scrolls up and down as it has done for the last 4 years!!

Posted by Dale_jeffs
looks out of place next to a mac though?

Posted by themarques
Well I would prefer to be going through mice than teh damn power supplies that I have gone through, 3 in the year so far. I thought the magsafe was going to be better than the old phono style plug but no ways same sh*t

I have an annoying little problem at the moment which I hope someone can help me with. After running June's system software update - I went through the process and restarted my machine as advised. However on reboot i was promted with a screen sayting "no updatable devices found". I now get this message everytime I reboot my machine as if this software is still trying to run everytime - now I left this thinking that the next software update would probably mean it sorted itself out - but having run that it hasn't helped. I suspect that it is the update to the cd/dvd drive that is giving me the problem. Any ideas how to sort this?

Also what is up with having to restart my mac all the time now - the ladt two months software updates and the installation of safari 3 have required me to do this - one of the things apple used to mock windows users for ?!?!?!?!

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
@ mar - maybe its not your power supplys but your electricity supply? have had and sold lots and lots of macs and none have had problems with the powersupply (only my 1st mac ever got a dodgey battery after 3 years old)

It maybe worth plugging it into a surge protector as power supplys should not be failing like you said.

@ Dale - i can help you out on your mouse problems, 1st the mouse is under warrenty so you can get apple to replace it uf you want, or you can just clean out the bit where the ball is by using a tooth brush and small bit of paper....

when I sold you the set I also kept one for myself and mine is sill going strong and I havent cleaned it etc (must have dirty fingers)

Posted by WelshTom
@ Dale I had the same problem after a couple of months. Just turn the mouse upside down and vigourously move the scroll ball in all directions - worked a treat for me!

Posted by WelshTom
@fatreg: Did you buy that LaCie drive in the end? If you did can I ask what price you managed to find it for?

Cheers

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
@ welsh - if I were you try to find a lacie D2 drive, I found them much more reliable and more rugged, I bought one of the ones fatreg was looking at but was disapointed by the quality so sold it same day... then again I had a d2 before so was used to a high build quality....

Regards your mac it sounds very odd I have never heard of this kind of problem, I recomend you first run a hardware check on your mac using the install cd's then assuming everythings fine run a back up with silver keeper or carbon copier making sure its bootable. Wipe your mac and re-install your os and then resotre from the backup.

Posted by themarques
@Luke this has happened with two different macs at two different houses, and if you google it you will see the problem is actually wide spread. Alot of people are complaining that apple should just be able to sell the magsafe cable without the power unit at £70 is quite steep every time.

About this new update, I am having the same problem when I restart and get the same message no updates etc for your drive. Also I think it messed up my wireless its having serious issues and I changed my router 3 times and same problem so I am certain its no the router.

Gonna do a hardware test later and see whats going on

Posted by WelshTom
@ Luke thanks for the reply - it is driving me nuts searching for a decent, well priced hard drive - why are Firewire drives almost double the cost of USB?

As for my the problem with the updates - I am loathed to do a full reinstal for such a small (but admitedly annoying) problem - any other suggestions?

Posted by themarques
One suggestion might be to reinstall the update combo update from apple website.

UPDATE; Looks like I am not alone with my wireless issue damn should have read up on that but I always never trusted my Linksys router.

@ welshTom..

nah.. the HDD is gonna have to wait for the time being..

I broke my watch the other day, and it's gonna cost me £260 to get it fixed!!

amazon were the cheapest though... £117.xx

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie[....]ctronics&qid=1184784143&sr=8-4

Posted by WelshTom
Ok solved the problem after a little digging around. Go to: system preferences -> accounts -> login items, then highlight the superdrive update 2.1 and click the '-' sign towards the bottom of the window.

Hope this helps someone!

Tom

Edit: Just seen your reply fatreg - thanks for the info. Ouch that must be one damn nice watch!

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
over 100 quid? gota be joking, I paid £45 for a 250gb firewire 400/800 almost a year ago....

Posted by fatreg
ok doke Luke..

find me a 500gb FW400 external HDD for less than 100 beans.......

Posted by themarques
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Weste[....]xternal-Firewire/dp/B000EXLVG0

£4.41 over your budget, if you do a google search for amazon codes you can drop it below the £100 mark easy.

Posted by fatreg
amazon codes!?

what!?

i need these in my life!

I spend far far far too much money at amazon!

Posted by themarques
Ok wel if you too lazy to google here is another option

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.[....]/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=4270

£93.31

Did you even look?

Posted by fatreg
I'm not too lazy...

i can look!

Buffalo!? oooh. I tried one of their ADSL gateways and it was poo poo!

maybe that WD is the way forward...

*googles amazon codes*

Posted by WelshTom
I would advise caution with the buffalo drive - I currently have a 320GB one and the reason I am in the market for a new drive is that I don't trust this drive as far as I can throw it!!! Makes terrible noises, will only mount about 1 in every 10 attempts - I fully expect it to pack up all together at any time (please please please not before I get a new one and backup my movie collection!) And this is from a drive that is approx 14months old and has only ever had intermitent use

Ok Mac dudes,

The apple refurbished products. what exactly does refurbished mean? I know in the phone trade it means one of two things

1: 14 day return
2: Faulty phone which has been fixed for resale.

So what does it mean in the Mac world?

As there a 24" iMac at a great price on the apple site. and I just wanna know will it be like new or will it be faulty / damaged with scratches etc?

got what maybe a dumb question.

My macbook pro has a fault with a sensor, my laptop is used every day and has lots of important stuff on blah blah. I cannot go 24 hours without it.

Should I have it fixed and buy a cheap replacment macbook and just sell the replacment on later or should I just buy anew macbook pro and bung this one (after repair) on ebay? One thins is I know a few people who have had this problem "fixed" only for it to come back within days

need to decide soon really

but by december I will purchase a new laptop wihout fail as this one will be out of warrenty

Hi,

got my macbook yesterday and it's awesome!

so much better than windows

Posted by Jools
Some pictures have surfaced of what appears to be the next iMac's new redesigned, and extremely thin, keyboard:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10511663@N02/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/27/is-this-the-new-imac-keyboard/

What do you think? I think I like it!

Posted by haynesycop
Oooooooo that is very very very nice!

Posted by fatreg
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh...

looks like the mac book keyboard?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
looks bad

its missing something, and just looks shit tbh

they could do far better im sure

Posted by Superluminova
Ooh I think that looks lovely. Really clean and simple, just what i like. now for some photos of the redesigned iMac please.

I really hope the rumours of August the 7th are true as I really wanna join the Mac revolution!

Posted by Jools
Yep, I'm pretty certain I'll be getting one of these new iMacs, even though they're not announced yet.

I have the money ready and waiting!!

Posted by Superluminova
Yeah me too,

I was all set to buy and iMac last week then i got wind of the new ones. Now I'm itching to spend the money!

So they better come soon or I'll have to buy something useless.

It'll be my first Mac

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
just seen some more fotos of the keyboard and im changing my mind, now i know its not made out od cheap flimsy material it looks alright

before I never saw a side photo and it just looked thin and flimsey, now its got some debth it looks allot better

@ jools, any thoughts to my question on the previous page?

Posted by Jools
@Luke: I've not heard much about this sensor issue. Have you contacted Apple to see how long it takes to fix? Is it something they could do in a retail Apple Store?

I'm not really sure what I'd do because I always have access to at least 3 other Macs, so being without my own for a short while would be such a disaster.

Another possibly is to see how much it would cost to rent a Mac for a few days/week. If its less than the money you'd lose buying then selling a replacement MacBook it might be worth it?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
it can be fixed in a apple center and I have my guy ready and waiting for my mac

in the mean time I decided to buy one (seemed easier) and am buying miss c's off her
