maybe worth getting the firewire one, that way you can do backup's and its faster

Posted by fatreg
USB 2.0 is fater than 1394 ain't it?

the 20" iMAc doesn't have a FW800 port!

Posted by Jools
In theory USB 2.0 (480Mbps) should be a bit faster than Firewire 400 (400Mbps), but in practise, usually isn't.

Given the choice, I would always choose a Firewire drive.

Posted by fatreg
And it uses my spare fw port rather than making me remove a usb something...

Hmmmmm.. Best keep my eyes peeled for a 500gb fw400 external hdd then!

Cheers chaps

Oh here's a silly question jools... I assume I have to format the external hdd to os journaled etc? Is that then useable by windows? Atm I seem to be swapping for vista and osx to complete random tasks and I'm bored of burning dvds!
And though itd be cool if the external hdd could be used by both os's!

Cheers

Posted by WelshTom
As already mentioned firewire in practice does work out slightly faster - although i have always found the benefits in speed to be minimal therefore I have been unable to justify the extra cost of getting a firewire drive (can anyone explain why they are more?)

Format the drive to the mac os x file system then go and download macdisk: http://www.macdisk.com/mden.php3 which will allow you to read/and write to any mac formated disks on a windows machine.

Tom

Actually OSX does not utilize the full speed of USB.2, I cant remember but I had the same problem and its something to do with the way the code is written or something...il try and look it up later.

Personally just stick to firewire,

another question form me.. (surprise surprise)

some of you maybe aware i be moving house soon...

and in my new house my hifi and my mac are going to be a good 10-15m apart but all my music is on my mac...

is there anyway of streaming audio from my mac to my hifi?

I see the airport with itunes will do itunes but what about VLC/QT/any other audio that might come out of my mac?

or do i really have to buy a big ol' phono to 3.5mm cable???

ano no. I can't use the inbuilt speakers in my mac, they are shockingly bad to say the least.

danke

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
I believe the onl way is to use a 3.5 cable, I use a airport express for my music, but all sound comes out of my mac other then music. The same with the roku I had

As you have a imac its probally best to just use a phono cable

Posted by fatreg
Oh joy...

*looks for a big ol' phono cable*

Posted by Jools
You can use AirFoil to stream any audio to an Airport Express

http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/

Posted by fatreg
ahh coolio cheers jools..

I'll have a wee look into that then...

Posted by themarques
When using airfoil you will find that you will have to tweak the audio delay in vlc as it does not sync well with the video its got a lag of a couple of seconds.

I just use a media server for all my video etc and leave my express just for itunes. Well worth the buck if you ask me, actually if you going to buy an express you might just want to buy this.

Posted by fatreg
hmmmmmmmm.....

I'll have a look at that too...

cheers themarques

How about something like this?

http://store.apple.com/Apple/[....]/RSLID?mco=94606497&nplm=T8541

Posted by themarques
That will only transfer his audio in low sound quality (FM) you really want to look at the express or the media server I linked you too, I have a similar version and I use it to stream, if you have the 802.11N on your mac you should be good to stream HD to the box alternatively DVD's and other lower bitrate stuff can be streamed at pretty much 802.11G Speeds. Well worth it plus you can use the hard drive to back up but dont quote me on that yet as the guys are working on ftp transfer.

Ok I am after adivce for the best way to get my house system setup. I currently have a macbook and am going to get an imac (waiting for updated version). I want to be able to share all my media between the two (movies in a variety of formats, itunes library & photos) I also want to be able to display all of the above on my lcd tv.

Now I was thinking of doing this by getting an airport extreme base station with an external harddrive attached to this & then apple tv for the lcd. So three questions: 1) will this setup do what i want? 2) is there a cheaper way to acheive this setup? 3) is there a better way to acheive this setup?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Guys,

Could you help me please with some basic Mac questions? I have a PC at the mo, don tworry have used a MAc before, and I have a hotmail account. Is it possible to use Entourage on a MAC in the same way as Outlook on a PC in order to download/check email without hacing to go to the hotmail website?

Secondly got those that use .mac IE a .mac email account, is it possible to check your .mac email via pop 3 for say a mobile phone/blackberry etc?

Thanks in advance for your help. Jag

Posted by haynesycop
The .mac shouldn't be a problem as i know fatreg has a blackberry and accesses his email without any problems, not sure about the hotmail/entourage as i don't use it.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Well thats half the problem solved in that case! Thanks! Its a bugger, my email address starts 6ixty6ix and .mac doesnt allow you to start your .mac account name with a number!!!! AAAHHHH!!!!

It really depends what type of videos you plan on using, if you can enlighten me on the codecs, ie the ones I am mostly concerned about are h.264 x.264 and mkv these will be a bit of problem for the moment but there is still a solution. Also if you plan on streaming HD.TS so if u plan on using any of these then you gonna need a seriously fast connection in other words PRE-N Wireless or you gonna need need ethernet cable.

I would really go with the media streamers from tvix I will be more than happy to show u a few options on some websites.

Basically u leaave the media streamer by your lcd connected via wireless (if not streaming any of the above) if you are then really connect via ethernet and u have a rock solid connection as alot of these media streamers are only using wireless 802.11G.

and then u should be fine to play your music, videos and watch slide shows I can show u how my setup is done but pretty much how I have written it out.

Take a look at this baby well worth the money...

http://www.kjglobal.co.uk/acatalog/TVIX_M5100.html

Will deal with a good 98% of files u throw at it..

Hola!

my finder keeps crashing for no reason at all..

it normally does it when I right click and open with....

I'd done a disc utils and it says my disk needs repairing...

how the flock do I repair my hdd??

oh but I don't know to know if it's going to delete anything!

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
you need to boot of an external volume or install dvd's then run disc utility and click the button saying repair disc permissions.

If that doesnt work get onyx and reset the finder...

Repairing disc permissions does not delelte anything, but you need to do it asap

Posted by fatreg
did that then did a verify and it says everything it titckey boo so we shall see!

Posted by Jools
If its crashing on a right-click then you may need to disable some Contextual Menu Items from:

~/Library/Contextual Menu Items

Posted by fatreg
only 2 things in there jools..

stuffit something or other and an MP3 tag edit...

I'll play it by ear and see how it goes....

Anyone here experiencing high temperatures with a macbook pro..I am thinking of opening mine up and sorting the thermal grease. The temperature gauge is showing in the region of 65 on idle and 80 degrees when running cpu intensive apps.

I have a 2.16 core duo with 2Gb ram any of the gurus tried this yet?

have you opened it up before?

the thermal greese thing turned out to be bogus, most people when they dismantled discovered that they acidently removed a sensor wire... meaning the sensor never knew it was running hot there fore the fans never went

if your mbp is under warrenty id send it to apple if I were you....

if not id run a hardware test and see if any faults are found

sometimes the most unlikly application can cause the graphix card or hard disc to run meaning the MBP uses the fans to keep it all cooler. Even some internet pages you may open in safari can cause this I have found.

My mbp is running at about 50 degrees and im not running much but I am in a warmer climate and I have the 2.33ghz model

Posted by mackem
how do you check the temperature?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
I use a widget called istat pro

Interesting I am going to try and run a hardware test later, I currently use SMCFAN CONTROL to cool it down but really not making a difference, I see that it drops by about 5 degrees sometimes but from 80 to 75 is still damn hot. Its been idle and its currently running at 61.

Though the thermal greece thing has sometimes proved bogus it has also proved true...sadly my warrently just ran out and I didnt get apple care..and really cant do without my mac its my life source at the moment.

That reminds me I best be backing up tonight...justtt incase.....

Posted by amnesia
I have the faster model too. 60 is average and fans go off all the time.

Apple says it's normal, which is sad because it's too damn hot.

Posted by themarques
60 on idle is crazy man, I am certain its got hotter in the last couple of months...

Posted by fatreg
ahhh...

M4V files..

how the flock do I convert them to a format I can use outside of itunes??

also... how do I ermm remove the protection on stuff i download from itunes??

*is being a lil devilish tonight*
