Somehow I feel this has been posted before, but since I couldn't find it, here goes:

The HT Hermes:

Pretty much looks like the sucessor to the Wizard. Got a 416Mhz Processor, 64MB ROM, 128MB Ram, 2.1MP Camera, VGA Front camera, UMTS, GPRS, EDGE, QUADBAND, WiFi, Bluetooth etc. Got a 320x240 screen (STILL!!!) and Lastly (here's the deal breaker... ) they switched over from SD in Universal to miniSD in Wizard to microSD in Harmes (what were they thinking????).

So anyway whatdya guys think?

@debu - I thought it was the 'Hermes' brand of clothing/perfume Well anyway that's a nice gadget mate! Nice keypad too, easy to send SMS, like that of the Communicator series . . .

Posted by masseur
looks plain compared to the k-jam and yes, I don't understand the changes that HTC are making in regards to the different memory types

Posted by masseur
PocketPC Italia has some live pics of the Hermes from 3GSM world
(English translation)

For me, the only thing really missing on my k-jam is the 3G data speeds so I am well pleased to see the successory will now have this

can't wait

Actually I had posted the information back in November 2005, Back then it was widely recognised that it will have a 416 mhz intel processor. It was no till much recently (i.e feb 2006, 3GSM) that the actual specs of the device were released.
TBH, I'm kinda turned off by this device at the moment. Its specs are quite bland (in a manner of speaking). I'm really interested in finding out more about the Microsofts Orgami Project. Lets see how that turns out.

that siemens looks tasty!

I'm liking this more and more for my k-jam replacement

it even has a scroll wheel!

Review : HTC Hermes alias T-Mobile MDA Vario II - meet the Nokia killer with TRUE WHEEL

I'll probably get the i-mate version which they are calling the JasJam. they seem to be stuck now on JasJar and Kam/K-JAM in the styles I like so it makes it easy for me

Posted by masseur
more from engadget

ok, so these are the t-mobile variants but they were able to compare side by side what I (and i-mate) call the k-jam and the jasjam

and here is one where you can clearly see the new scoll wheel

I'm not sure if its just the colour difference but the jasjam/hermes looks a little thicker... I hope its not

Posted by masseur
according to pics from cebit shown at windowsmobile.web-log.nl the hermes looks now to have extra keys for the windows key and the ok key.

thats great! they are there on the k-jam in keyboard open/landscape mode but when used in keyboard closed/portrait mode there is no access unless you slide the keyboard open slightly.

Posted by Mad_Bob
Im with you on that Masseur... This will be my k-Jam upgrade as well... Se have left their releases far too lon and will suffer for it. I was thinking of going to an M600 or W950, but they are about 4-5 months away. This will be my next handset now. I love my k-Jam so I will be some what obsessed with this one lol.

Posted by Aqu4rius
any more news on a release date yet?

i have a free upgrade burning a whole in my pocket and i wanna buy one ASAP!

Posted by ericharlz
lookin forward to this device.. in one of the pics there are diff colors on the keyboard.. is it because the Num pad are arannged differently? not just all aligned at the top?

Posted by Evil Eye
the keyboard looks good.

Posted by masseur
I think I prefer the k-jam keyboard with the spaced keys rather than keys right next to each other

however, if for nothing else, I'll be swapping my k-jam for the i-mate version of the hermes just for the 3g.

Losing 3g was the one big downer for me when I chose not to keep the JasJar

Posted by Evil Eye
the processor speed provided on hermes is great...

and 3G network is not yet launched in India... I think it will take ages to launch it...

btw if its launched I will get myself a cheap 3G phone like the K600i and won't swap my K-JAM for just 3G feature.

you almost certainly won't notice much difference with the processor speed. The TI 200mhz OMAP performs almost as well as the Intel 416mhz

I do around 50mb data on my k-jam each month so 3g is definitly a must for me!

Posted by Evil Eye
hey masseur,
how to notice the amount of data transferred while using internet om K-JAM?
is there a data counter?

Posted by masseur
I haven't seen any data counter but you can use SPB GPRS monitor or do as I do and check your bill each month

Posted by Evil Eye
I don't need to worry about the bill.
I pay 300 INR(per month) i.e 6.67 US$ and get unlimited usage. but the surfing speed is too slooooooooow...

Posted by Aqu4rius
stil no reply regarding a release date!

Posted by masseur
it was expected May but I have heard dates up until Q3

I-mate certainly haven't announced it themselves yet

Posted by upper
yes it will be a deffenate replacement for my k-jam too just coz of the 3g, but then again depending how much it will be from t-mobile i wont rush into it unless they sell it for £150-£200 as im already a t-mobile customer. i think the hermes will 1st be available on t-mobile in the uk that is as it was in the german t-mobile press release but that just shows its just around the corner for the uk.

Posted by masseur
Until i-mate started selling windows mobile phones I only ever bought iPAQs, and even then never bought pocketpc's with built in phone as I didn't think the phones versions were mature enough

now, I only consider i-mate products although I do still keep one eye on HP just in case something takes my fancy

I'm sure, as with normal phones, I'll not buy any branded windows mobile devices and if that means waiting longer then so be it

Hi!

I am interested in the HTC Hermes very much and am also thinking about the Fujitsu Loox T830

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=121648

Where would people here recommend to buy a SIM free unlocked Hermes?

Expansys? or take a trip to Tottenham Court Road?

Any advice welcomed!

Ofiaich

Posted by masseur
I've got my last 2 i-mates from Expansys but thats mostly because they have an agreement to get them in first as they buy so many.

Tottenham Court Road is rubbish these days in my opinion. I used to get most of my stuff up there but these days you can better prices online. Also it seems that most of TCR is owned by 4 or 5 chains

Posted by Aqu4rius
yea i got my last i-mate from Expansys, but T-mobile have offered me a free upgrade so will need to get it from them if i want to get it for nothing!

Posted by ofiaich
thanks masseur,

I won't waste my money on a long train ride !

I have been keeping my eye on expansys !

Can somebody confirm if it (HTC Hermes/ I-mate JasJam) is Class 10 EDGE enabled...Debu mentioned it in the 1st post but can't find it mentioned in any of the links posted here or at Uncle Google.
As manish mentioned, 3G's nowhere in the horizon here in India but U never know (the competion amongst the operators is very strong & if even 1 of em mentions it by mistake, the others will go ahead & start it...testing has been going on for ages...may be finished already) So I don't want to get a phone which won't be future proof. At the same time can't do without EDGE till THAT future arrives here in India.
And the above (EDGE) will be the only reason between me & the P990 WHEN it is launched...I m gonna be in Dubai for the next 2 months (JUNE JULY) & I'll definately be getting more than 1 phone. Honestly if this dosen't ve EDGE, I'd definately go for the P990 but if it has.....then.....may be both

noticed t-mobile uk website has removed the vario from its phone range...

Perhaps its been discontinued

Well i would of said that it may be out of stock, but for the MDA Vario and the Compact 2 not to be listed is kinda unusual, because i really doubt that any man will buy a pink compact 2 other than Fatrege , for it to be out of stock.

So maybe t-mobile are making room for the knew awaited MDA Vario 2.

AAhhh thats much better.

O2 has confirmed to launch this Hermes http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=122438

Posted by Aqu4rius
got a phonecall from T-mobile, confirming the VARIO 2 will be released end of July/early August.

Posted by masseur
here are some pictures of what apparantly is the final production version of the Hermes

as expected, they have now included the windows and ok keys in keyboard closed mode and also the new scroll wheel

Posted by ofiaich
Hi !!

based on ths new news, can anyone predict a release date?

unbranded, etc !!

Ofiaich

Posted by masseur
although I have heard random postings of May/June availability, by far the most common is sometime in Q3, i.e. sometime before the P990

Posted by ofiaich
thanks for your quick reply masseur!

I need to search for a comparison thread now.. Hermes and P990!

Ofiaich

Posted by masseur
well, I don't recall such a comparison off the top of my head but realistically, they both offer much the same functionality so its down to the operating system, screen size, memory card format and other aspects like that, that separates the two.

At the earliest opportunity I will be getting both so I hope to make a detailed comparison at that time

Posted by WelshTom
Over on XDA-developers a few people have been told by T-Mobile that the Vario II (HTC Hermes) will be released in August.

Posted by ofiaich
thanks masseur and WelshTom,

I think, masseur, that you buy the unbranded version direct from the manufacturers, don't you? Is this likely to be released before a network branded phone?

I take the point about OS and functionality. It's the additional language support that I need...

Ofiaich

Posted by masseur
yeah, I only buy i-mate because they have generally good support and are quick to release firmware updates. I've not heard good things about qtek support and I wouldnt buy a network branded one.

i-mate will call this the JasJam apparantly, but its not been officially announced yet and doesn't appear on their site yet either, whereas O2 for example have alerady announced it.

mind you, from past experience, i-mate tend to announce late and the device is available soon after

Posted by fatreg
afaik Orange are calling it the SPV 3100.

In previous models there was a SDIO port so you could plugin for example an FM SDIO card.

Is there anything like this in the HERMES or can anything be done with the microSD slot?

Posted by fatreg
i've never seen an SDIO compliant devices in mini SD format....

fatreg

Posted by masseur
min SD is the one down point for me when I moved from the Jam to the k-JAM.

I already had a 2gb SD card and was close to buying a 4gb card when I learned about the mini SD in the k-jam and so had to settle for 1gb in my new device.

Fortunately now 2gb have been released so I am back where I was a year ago but you're right, there are very very few SDIO compliant mini SD devices available
