First Impressions Of Sony Walkman (NWA-1000)

Opening the sleek black box I found the player, it looked near enough majestic within its presentation box. After I finished staring in awe of its shinyness I took it out of the box, I was amazed how tiny it is the size sits perfectly into the palm of you hand. It is built ergonomically with the buttons placed. The buttons are responsive and navigation is easy with the new 3X3 menu layout, from the main menu you can access your music and the settings. the OLED screen is amazing its clear and has a semi hypnotic glow to it, but it doesn’t do to well in sunlight which is a slight pain, but its readable.

Now out of the box there were some headphones, USB cable, Mains charger unit where you have to plug the USB cable to charge it from the mains. The CONNECT software is painfully slow, but it does its job. Transfer speeds are also worthy of shedding a tear over, transferred over about 1 GB of music in 10 mins ish. Actual sound quality is very good, bass being responsive but not over powering. The volume is lacking somewhat in loudness even with the volume limiter function switched off. It is quite loud though but not to my liking. I’m using the SONY EX71SL in-ear headphones to get the best sound, I found that the headphones that came with them weren't even on a bog standard level to normal headphones. I haven't had that much time with it to say about it's time shuffle and favourite shuffle options that it boasts, but I will give it a full review over the next week or two.

Hope this helps

Do you have to use the supplied software to transfer the mp3s to it or does it also just shopw up as an external drive that you can dump everything onto?

Posted by axxxr
really cool device but i can see figure prints all over this one!

Posted by waibun_lee
Well you could use the software, but it shows up as an external device as well.

very nice indeed!

These things are pretty big though, and pretty expensive, in comparison to apple products...

But i love the design, the screen behind the mirrored finish looks great.

the UI on these is the first in the Sony Walkman range to be more intuitive than the ipod'd, in my opinion.

very nice, shame they dont do a 40Gb one yet...

Posted by waibun_lee
@ kk.226, for a HDD Player the size is impressive, it is very thin and robust from what i can tell so far. Compared to it's main competitor, the ipod mini (9.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 1.3 cm) compared to the Sony
(8.8 x 5.5 x 1.87 cm) it is fairly smaller. Also with the Sony walkman theres more value for money, on average the ipod mini is about £140 ish for 4GB whilst with the sony walkman you get 6GB for about £160 ish with a slighly longer battery life. It boils down to, you want to be sheep and follow he ipod craze or get something worth your cash?

does sony let there players use acc or lossless yet for improved sound quality or is it still sticking with mp3 and the old and poor atrac.

here is a review in French with lots of pics

unfortunately I can't access babelfish at work so cannot offer a link to a translated page

I have an ipod shuffle, which i wear with the cord around my neck, rather than in my pocket etc. Does the Walkman come with a neck cord, or do you have to carry it in a pocket? I like my Shuffle, but the Walkman is a far superior device, and, well, its a Sony! Can you post a pic with it in your hand so i can judge its size better?

20gb Walkman for £198, is this a good buy?

UPDATE: Ok the CONNECT player software is driving me nuts, its insanly slow and its just crap. BUT thankfully it is compatable with sonicstage + also the volume seems to be a bit too low for my liking.

cheers

Posted by batesie
well Sonic Stage 3.3 is the best one so far and i havent had any problems with it yet.

can you rotate the screen on it like the HD5?

Posted by brownlad007
so overall whats the disadvantages and advantages of the new sony walkman ?

Posted by waibun_lee
No you can't rotate the screen.

Advantages

- Very good battery life (20 HR on the 6GB version i got, its done about 21!)
- Clear screen
- Sytlish and compact form factor
- Good value for money
- Great navigation menu system, very SE like
- Can charge via AC!!! this is what really impressed me

Disadvantages

- Low volume (maybe theres a code to unlock this? i dunno)
- Crap CONNECT PLAYER software (use sonicstage and you'll be fine)
- Kinda slow sometimes (e.g. it hangs for a while to load up and search songs etc but its not insanely slow)

theres not that many bad points really, if they solve the volume in the future firmwire updates. Thats all really, the screen hasnt got any scratches on it so far and its been in with other stuff so its not bad, and sony could of included some decent headphones

i hope they havent done what apple have done and put a sound limiter on it! it drives me mad with my ipod mini, i swear if i am on a bus or somewhere else loud then max volume is only just audible over the back ground noise - but it is no where near loud enough! and all this cos the stupid bloody french got some silly max volume limit so to save money apple just produce one product for the whole of europe and limit the volume on them all with no way to take the limiter off! i mean i am sorry but as a mature human being i think it is up to me how loud i want my music, i mean include the limiter for legal reasons by all means but allow your users to turn it off!!!

hmmmm

im going to sell my nano this week because of lack of storage and poor poor battery life.

should i get 20gb? kind of put of by size and weight

or 6gb ? just the right amount of space and smaller (i think)

anyone got size comparisons ?

thanks

Posted by batesie
best going into a sony centre and trying them out for size, the HD5 has a 40Hr battery life ( ive got 35 at high volume) and i have the code to get into the service menu to switch off the sound limiter.

comparison for size between Sony NW-HD5 20Gb and a Apple n Pear's

Posted by brownlad007
im guna try going to a sony centre.

need to comapre the 6gb and 20gb.
Sony Walkman NWA-1000/3000

I bought the 6gb this morning...it is beautiful.... smaller than the other version.

Presentation box is classy as shown in the beginning of the thread...

It has a couple of sample tunes already installed on it... which is good...because at least i know it works.... but due the fact it is not compatible with my ibook... I am afraid I am selling it on....

Unless someone can tell me how I can get it going with my ibook.... but otherwise... you can find mine here....

@smilerthecheshirecat surely an ibook should be complimented by an ipod

It seems like a pretty neat device nice and compact, congrats on your purchase waibun.

I had a 4th generation ipod a few months back...

And it did not impress me too much...

The walkman looks stunning in comparison.....sniff sniff..... but not worth going back to windows for it though

Cant you install virtual Pc?I trust you have a Mac!

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
