OK so carrying on from this thread right here on Esato, I have somehow managed to just buy myself a Nokia 8800.
Why did @massuer (no I'm not blaming you eheh) have to talk about his uncontrollable urge/desire etc. to have this phone as the exact same thoughts were spinning around in my head also.
The reason that was putting me off was the not the fact of the price of the overall deal with phone plus contract, but the features of the phone itself and was it really worth it.
I suppose the clinch that made me purchase it was that I can always sell the phone if I don't truely want it and make myself about £100 profit on the cost of the handset, because the contract I can use just for the free minutes etc.
Do you think this was a right decision for me to make, or am I a complete idiot for going through with this and puchasing the Nokia 8800?
Make me feel better guys, please

IDIOT!!!!
I know you'll get tired of it and get back to SE.
Posted by dicky
8800 is a great phone, even if it does come with a little purse to keep it in!
but anyway, dont regret buying it,its a great phone. and if you dont like it you can get a decent price selling it,so its really a win win situation.
Posted by defensive
@Krubach - that makes me feel no better! but I still have my K750i & P910i for
@Dicky Snapples - thats what I wanted to hear
grrr.. I don't regret what I have just done in the slightest really I don't its just, well I can't explain it properly.
when it arrives in the post and I've had a play around with it then I'll let you know what I think.
one more decision I need to make, now if I like it, then there will be a K750i with W800i firmware loaded onto it going spare. maybe my dad can have that as he would like a new phone after his 7610 started playing up, no don't say that defensive, Nokia 7610 playing up! doesn't bode well for me getting a Nokia 8800.
aaaaarrggghhhhhhh!!!!

good for you. I'll hang on and see what your opinion is.
I've read many reviews and this one pretty much sums them up. But then I never got the V3 for its functionality so I doubt that would disuade me when it comes to the 8800
give us a little review when received please
Posted by defensive
I can't wait to receive it, sounds ridiculous but I'll be scared when it arrives as then I have to charge it and sit and wait and stare at it! I'm so excited though and its arrival is highly anticipated to be perfectly honest with you, plus the week off work means I can stay in and wait for the bright yellow DHL van to pull up outside and bring the ton weight to my door and say 'here you go' jeesh I'm getting overally excited about a new phone again!
Mini review will be a few days after I receive it as will wait to find out what its like on day-to-day usage but I shall be sure to let you know my first impressions as soon as it arrives! Ooh its like being 5 all over again waiting for christmas to arrive eheh, at least they were in stock and it should be here by Thursday at the very latest =)
Nokia 8800 here we come! I haven't used a Nokia properly daily in over a year since my trusty 6310i which was fantastic I have to admit.
I certainly am glad I ordered this phone though and understand what @masseur is saying about the V3 and how that phone was never bought for the functionality but more so in the way of looks / design features.
I'm sure this mini review I shall be writing will turn into the likes of an essay at the right my blod pressure is running and how overly hyped I am about receiving this phone. I must sound like a complete moron saying this but I can't beleive I feel this way about, well about a Nokia!

are you mad man??
don't buy it, it's f**king expensive, has no good features(0.5 megapixels), it has a keypad impossible to use(keys too small), not really a good screen, no flash and...
it's not a SONYERICSSON, nokia SUCKS!!!
Posted by Coxy
I also was tempted by this phone because of its looks. But in the end the features (or lack of them) put me off. But possibly the worst thing about it is the battery, its that bad that you get two in the box! It only lasts a day if that, apparently.
I did see a cop with one yesterday in town though! lol.
Posted by defensive
@victorm - haha you are so like me its unbelievable! Thats what I thought but I still decided to take the plunge so to speak and get it.
@coxy - a cop had one?! that's supposed to make me feel better or worse
Posted by Coxy
I dont really know whether thats better or worse! lol. Well atleast you get a desk stand that charges both batteries.
Posted by defensive
@coxy you been reading the review that @massuer posted! personally I haven't yet remover a battery from the Nokia 8800 but in the review posted above that is what they say, that its extremely difficult and they just gave up! *wimps* lol
Posted by Vein
I don't see why people are complaining of features on a fashion phone?!
The phone is not designed to have such features as memory cards and megapixels. It was designed to satsify users of the 8910i wanting an upgrade after 2 years.
It's pricey for exclusivity, much like the RAZR when it was first released and much like the S700i ( although the S700i is a different phone it's price was still much higher for what it was at the time ).
The phone is great and the screen on it gives a certain satisfying pleasance to the eye!
TBH, don't slander what can't be afforded
Posted by defensive
@Vein - nicely summed up their mate! can't wait to have it in my hand's in the knowing that very few people will have the same phone as me
Posted by Coxy
@defensive, in all honesty no i actually havent even clicked the link that masseur posted! Its just what ive heard from sites and also my dads work mate, so ive had a bit of a play with one when i went into the office one time.
Posted by defensive
well at least Nokia realised the battery was rubbish and through in another one then!
Posted by Coxy
but dont you think it would have been better to have a good battery in the first place?!
Posted by defensive
true
*sighs and fades into the background until the phone arrives*
Posted by masseur
I got my V3 more than a year ago for £380 (here is my thread for that) and was surprised in the new year when they started coming down in price quite dramatically to the levels we see today. Its amazing its still such a popular phone and that gives it some credibility I guess.
I do wonder whether now is the right time to buy as I often find that just after I buy something I've been agonising over for a while it then drops it price, as though my purchase was the one they were waiting for to fully realise their return before making it more affordable to the masses... what to do... what to do?
Posted by defensive
if you really want it, and can afford it most importantly, then I say go for it!
that's what made me decide to get it to be honest with you, you only live once and I may get hit by a bus (as the saying goes) next week. at least this way i can say i have owned any held my own & if i truely hate it then its going to be sold on anyway and I'll just keep the contract for the year at the minimum allowed (£19 per month) and use the free minutes/texts!
Posted by Coxy
well i agree with you defensive, if i could afford it id probably buy it too! lol
Posted by masseur
its not to do with affordability really, I'm in the fortunate position of being able to get most that I want, but I'm sensible when parting with my money (btw, you've all heard the expression that money talks but who knows what it says?..... it says.... goodbye!
I'm already getting the L7 SLVR this week and sometime soon either the V3i or V3x and also the P990 as well. In fact the list of phones and other gadgets coming up soon on my list is fairly extensive and the 8800 is really just a novelty, a curiosity and something to amuse me as I wait for the other things and thats why I'm holding back.
nope, my mind is made up. defensive, you sound sensible to I'll wait for your opinion
Posted by victorm
@defensive
did you already test his keypad???
Posted by SCORPIONKING1982
@defensive
I look forward to your post here after the first time you drop it and scratch/dent it
Posted by defensive
@SCORPIONKING1982 - thanks for that mate! just the kind of thoughts I wanted to hear right now

I held one for the brief period of about 5 minutes and it seemed alright actually!
@masseur - V3X I'm also getting once release, the L7 SLVR looks nice but doesn't interest me much to be honest. oh and sorry to say this (well I'm not really!) but the P990 has truely disapointed me with the screen size being smaller than the P910i and also the keyboard which seems to be glued to the housing not removable, although the keypad is in all fairness. I know I can't compare the P990 with the Nokia 8800 in any respect but I felt like I wanted something high end and this was to be!
I've already got my eyes on getting the W900i as well so also getting the 8800 means my K750i/W800i shall be redundant so its another good excuse to get the W900i
@masseur - I'll be sure to let you and everyone else know my opinions on this phone and you can rest assured it shall not be biased and will tell every little fault with it!
p.s why do I tend to right so much without any intention to do so in the first place

its back on the O2 student site and reduced down now to £194.99
getting more tempted... and I know you mention its out of stock but I don't mind waiting... I'm still asking myself why? though!
Posted by defensive
nooooo! £194.99
Posted by jenbones
Great phone, apart from you get finger marks all over the titanium... but great phone!!!!
Posted by masseur
same with my V3 so I'm used to that.
actually, the V3 gets quite dull after a few days use but it always brings a smile to my face when I use a cleaning cloth and see it shine again
you should see the screen on my k-jam too... its quite disgusting sometimes and I often use my fingers instead of the stylus
I guess this problem is inherent in some devices

your as bad as me with my P910i its just easier to check emails using my thumb that grab the sylus all the time though!
Posted by amnesia
i'll bet I could have beaten it or given you an equally tempting deal
Posted by masseur
I've found a way to get it from O2 even cheaper.
I've just joined quidco because I always see them mentioned on Hot UK Deals and if you buy using your quidco account you get £35 back on any O2 contract you buy (see here for details)
now, I haven't found a way to get quidco to use the student site but even using the normal O2 shop if you take the £219.99 and subtract your £35 back from quidco this makes it £184.99 and thus £10 cheaper than the student site.
Still trying to suss a way to use quidco on the student site though...

@amnesia - I'm sure you could have lol but I didn't put that much thought into this purchase!
@masseur -
thats all I have to say, apart from I'm never dealing with o2 again after this as they are complete and utter idiots.. grrr.. although phone should be here in a week now, lets hope its worth it when it arrives!
p.s. it should be
Posted by *Jojo*
. . . metal (is it
@defensive - You don't have any other recourse here do you? Can you still return the item back (money-back-guarantee)
Posted by defensive
An updated 8800, supposedly the 8800i is rumoured to never be produced according to most Nokia forum's but I have my doubts, like the 6230 then 6230i etc.
Anyway it will be here soon(ish) so I'm not going to cancel it, was going to get CPW to match the deal but they are also out of stock at the moment they say
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - That Nokia 8800 "i" was just a wild guess mate, but who knows it might just be included in the assembly line right? Good Luck with your new toy . . . boy . . . . enjoy !
Posted by defensive
the 8800 will be re-released in yet another version, but shall be a different number e.g. 8900 or something, and not a 8800(i) version! just whats been said at various places
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - Post some pics taken with your Nokia 8800 once received OK?
Posted by defensive
@JN - as soon as I receive it I have already promised a short (although my posts always get longer than I expect them too!) review on it as well as sample photographs taken in various conditions, also maybe a video or two to sample the frame rate
ooh I'm getting all exceited yet again now I'm thinking about it, this is stupid, its a phone, and its a Nokia, but I want it NOW!!!
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - OK ! I'll just be waiting for that review. For me, the Nokia 8800 is more of a 'show-off' mobile with inferior 'specs' . . . fortunately, you are INCLUDED in the ELITE member's LIST mate !
Posted by defensive
yeh thats what 8800 was designed for and why they used professional composers for the ringtones etc. more of a statement than a true everyday phone for me, thats why I bought it eheh!
for the sake of a few hundred quid if it gets me this excited and worked up over it then I feel thats worth it
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - YUP! I agree as well . . . as that's my very same FEEL when I wanted to OWN the Nokia 8890 and 8855 models then. UNfortunately, I only managed to acquire both 3 years after it's INITIAL launch in the market
Posted by marlonski
@defensive
Nice phone mate, wouldn't want to swap my w800 for one ! IMO it looks good and feels nice in the hand. A friend of mine has one as he's very pleased with it

well I have the 8810 which I picked up about 3 months ago for £150 as good as new, previous owner looked after it extremely well! so that made me want the 8800 even more.
@JN - your honoured to own the Nokia 8855
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - Well how about swapping my Nokia 8855 with your 'soon-to-be-received' Nokia 8800 matey? I'll add the box and charger so it will just be a FAIR deal huh, whatdayasay?
Posted by defensive
@JN - considering I could get a brand new (virtually anyway) 8855 for about £70GBP delivered, and what does the 8800 retail at.. £550GBP can you guess the answer
but thanks for the very kind and GENEROUS offer but still, afraid I have to say NO on this occasion
Posted by *Jojo*
@defensive - YUP! The difference is - 480GBP . . . and I was only kidding - most of the time matey ! Thanks for the lyrics too . . .
Posted by defensive
@JN - well just a small difference lol, check the thread where I posted those lyrics
