Can we have concrete evidence on the fact that a larger memory stick/memory does not mean slower phone? I'm intrigued by this question..and does the amount of data filled in the card affect the sppeed as well? eg. a phone with 1GB card with 400 MB of data would be faster than a phonw with a 1GB card with say 700 MB filled?

@Julidzg
do a google search for '4gb pro duo'. More specifically, do a Froogle search for it. I've seen 4gb sticks as low as 100 US. These were the regular speed, not the Sandisk Ulltra II or the Sony High Speed sticks. Pricegrabber.com will give you some good prices too. No gaurantees on some of these sticks not being fakes though. Ebay is even cheaper, but it's reported that 90% or more of those are fakes. I've even emailed two "powersellers" with 15.000 positive responses in the last month and 99% rating if they'd guarantee the authenticity of their cards and they haven't responded.
I'm thinking that I can get a 4GB Ultra II or High Speed authentic from a place like Buy.com or J&R Electronics or Tiger Direct for $140. Not sure if these are fakes or not, but retailers of their size have more to lose by selling fraudulent memory cards.
@Everyone else,
Anyone know if the faster cards eat less battery power?
thanks,
chris

I went from 64 to 256 to my current 512. I know it's nowhere near as large as the 4GB, but it is 8 times larger than the original 64MB card, and I can assure you the 512 card is just as fast in terms of file transfer as the 64.
I have noticed that accessing folders that have many files in them takes longer than if they only had a few. But I expect that is only because there are more songs on a larger card, not because the card access is slower. If a folder only has a few files in it it's just as quick to access as with the 64MB card.
Nevertheless it does indicate that it may take a few seconds to open a folder with 3GB of songs in it (due to the phone read speed), but if all your songs are in artist sub-folders you can avoid that issue.
But the phone itself is not slow with the 512 compared to the 64. There is absolutely no difference in any facet of phone performance other than the speed it takes to open folders with lot's of files in them.
Regarding the issue of if the card is full, likewise when my 512 is completely full, phone performance doesn't suffer in the slightest. This is not surprising, since the K750/W800 don't use the memory card for swap space so there would be no reason that the phone would slow down if no space is available.

I visited the oficial Sony webpage and they had the 4gb to sell, but not the high speed one, just the normal black MSPD, i wonder if it has been released yet or if all the 4gb high speed mspd are fakes. I also looked for it on ebay and they have very good prices, but there are a lot of High speed and with all the rumors of 90% of the ms sold there are fake, i dont know what to do. Do you think is it safe to buy on ebay, and even a High speed mspd. Please check on ebay and tell me what you think i should do.
If i buy the high speed one would i have any problem with music files, since it has the magicgate feature and for what i've read thats related with copyright protection.

no, magicgate applies to Sony's proprietary atrac codec only. Mp3, aac etc. will run fine.

Jules,
Ebay has a guide about buying fake memory sticks:
http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-[....]PageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:SEARCH:4
It talks about your protection as a consumer and how to spot a fake. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra 50 bucks and get one from someplace like Buy.com, which MIGHT be able to guarantee authenticity, but as a good sized online retailer, wouldn't want to deal with claims of fraud. Although it sounds like you are reasonably protected on ebay, it seems like a hassle if you have to go down that road.
However, I did buy my 2GB Sony High Speed on ebay and have had absolutely no trouble with it in the 6 months i've had it. I've not determined whether or not it is a fake yet. Based on the ebay guide, I think that it is not fake, but i plan on sending it to sony to determine before I sell it with my w800 when I get a w810.
good luck,
chris

Thanks for the repplies. What i'd like to know now is if really there's a 4GB High Speed Memory Stick Pro Duo cause i haventeseen it officially (in the page of Sony), but on ebay there's a lot of 4gb HSMSPD so for what i think, all the 4GB HS are fakes, so if anyone knows if thats tru pls confirm it.

Hi All
New to this forum...to the sony ericsson...and to memory sticks in general....so please excuse my total ignorance. I've just upgraded to a 750i. The phone came with a 64MB memory stick in the phone and I've purchased a 256Mb Sony Pro Duo Stick. Problem:-
I've read enough to know that I nee to format the new stick before the phone will recognise it...but how? Cant find anywhere on the phone to do it and although my pc has a mem stick slot that recognises the 64MB card and what's on it when I slot that card in using the adapter, the pc wont recognise the new card. Is that 'cos it's not formatted? If so....it seems a bit of a 'chicken and egg' situation. How can I format the card?
Posted by *Jojo*
@whiz - Found it mate !
@guillame- I've heard the BRAND NEW cards not NEED to be FORMATTED . . . though in some cases . . . it does, generally - NO!

I don't know what you've been reading, but it's rare to need to format before use. Is the card reader you have MS DUO Pro compatible?
Posted by arc_tc
i've a memory stick pro duo 512mb.
should i format it to fat16 or fat32?
what is the difference? pro cons? etc?
thanks.

1)Is sandisk more reliable then sony
I can't totally say YES, I manage to USE both . . . but mostly, SONY ones. Whatever will be your choice . . . just MAKE sure that it is under warranty, so you can have it replaced if ever it goes - berserk. Original Sony cards at my end HAVE up to - 5 years . . . warranty.
2)Can i use sandisk in my sony digicam or any other sony product where sony pro duo is supported
As long as the card is COMPATIBLE with the gadget (fone, PSP or digicams) I'm sure it will work . . . they just DIFFER in - brands and Sony have High-Speed features, don't know with the Sandisks . . .
3)Im having K750i, i want to have 2gb card in it does my phone support it.
For what I know of . . .
K750i can support UP TO - 2 GB, though when I was about to sell my 1 month-old K750i, the potential buyer told me that it can only HOLD - 1 GB ones 4)what will be the price diffrence between sony & sandisk for 1 & 2 gb card in Indian Rs.
I am not sure how the cards is priced at India mate
Hope that helps . . . even a BIT

have just recieved my 512mb M2 - it's tiny!- however it's only reading at 455mb!!
I know they use some space for file directories and stuff, but 57mb seems a bit much?!
Any Ideas?
Posted by sam69
I'm also using a 512MB right now on my P990i, after a reformat it's reading 462MB (or 467MB can't remember exactly).

I had confirmed that Sandisk is better then sony in terms of money & performance. So now im clear with sandisk, I had enquired about diffrent cards provided by sandisk.
1)SanDisk Mobile Memory Stick PRO Duo™ 2GB
2)SanDisk Ultra II™ Mobile MS PRO Duo 2GB
Now the Question is which one is better.....
1)SanDisk Mobile Memory Stick PRO Duo™ 2GB
SDMSPD-2048
Features:
.Larger storage capacities (256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB) than standard Memory Stick cards
.High-speed data transfer rate of 15Mbps** for DVD-quality video in real time
.The fast transfer rates help prevent data loss when power is suddenly cut- off or if the media is removed accidentally
.Advanced security with Access Control Function and MagicGate™
technology
2)SanDisk Ultra II™ Mobile MS PRO Duo 2GB
SDMSPDU-2048
Advanced Features:
Transfer Speeds:
Write 9MB/sec; Read 10MB/sec
.Package Contents:
.Ultra II™ Mobile Card
Adapter
.Insert
Cross-Sell Sheet
So wat does it mean I had taken this readings from Sandisk Homepage. It shows that the Statdard MSDP transfer rate is higher then ULTRA MSDP, sO plz jojo or anyone could help me out of this,It would be my final decession to buy the card.So plz help me out. Thanks in Advance
Posted by senninha
the higher transfer speeds of the Ultra II and other such cards are only good if you use a card reader or maybe digital cams. phones don't take advantage of the higher transfer speeds so it's added cost without any benefit if you don't use a card reader.
as for memory sticks' actual capacities, you can check out this link to get an idea of how much usable space you actually have:

How come my 1 GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo (High-Speed) is having some problems with my Silver - K750i at times
Posted by djsquare
Ya i got that but i dont want this confusing answers, i want some stong answer which i had asked, Coz i want to buy sandisk card but which on is a big ?. So plz help with me some specific answer between the 2. Neways thnks jojo.
Posted by *Jojo*
@dj - Since I CAN'T give you a GOOD straight answer here . . . I'll just advise you one thing when buying the card of your choice - itself. Better bring your fone where you will insert or be using the card with . . . When I was deciding to upgrade my 64 MB card on my P900 back then . . . I was fully aware that the maximum memory than I can insert on it was a Sony 128 mb memory stick DUO one . . . so I bought it after having some final-approval-query with some of the technically-inclined-members here . . . I was 100% sure, but when I've inserted the 128 MB DUO card on my P900, the fone just cannot DETECT the card
Good Luck - dj !

Hi guys, I was just wondering up to what capacity Memory Stick Pro Duo can a K750i and a P910i read? I currently have a 1gb on my P910i and a 64mb on my girlfriend's K750i.

Hey guys have any one of you experienced slow phone speeds when a higher capacity memory card (1gb or more) is used

And what happens when you buy the memory online???

@bato - About the K750i . . . it's 4 GB it can take to the MAX (I've heard it here somewhere) . . . though the MAX I've used was 1 GB, though now I'm just usin' a - 512 MB Sandisk one . . . I think the Sandisk performs better than the - Sony . . . . (it's because there are Sony imitations found at my end). For the P910i, I guess it's - 1 GB, as I've never seen someone usin' a 2 GB on it - so far . . .

@*Jojo*: Thanks for the info.
By the way, we both use SanDisk, so that shouldn't be a problem.

me either. I wonder if the extra "space" is something to do with magicgate?

Ppl no need to worry which brand to buy. Sandisk help Sony to build MS as well (read about the new MS Pro HG-Duo, co-developed by Sony and Sandisk).
In fact Sandisk is one of the creator of Memory flash.
Memory failure is very rare but it could happen to any brand. My friend Sony's genuine MS Duo is broken in just 2 weeks. My Sandisk (plain not the pro) is broken suddenly and yet the replacement sandisk gave me (still not the pro) survive the washing machine just fine.
The most important is to get the genuine memory and whichever the cheapest one. In fact in dSLR word two name is the front runner of memory flash, Sandisk and Lexar. My Sandisk Ultra CF and Lexar Pro CF has been with me for few years and never fail.
Posted by max_wedge
It's not the brand that people are questioning. Sony, Sandisk, Lexar all make perfectly good memory cards, but the issue is when a dodgy third world manufacturer copies one of these brands, ie: puts Sony logos over it to make it look like a sony when it is a cheap copy made from cheap components.
Cards form legitimate manufacturers other than sony are not fake. Fake cards are a copy of a legitimate brand name (usually Sony)
Posted by Salvador_
Well i can tell u this much.
when i bought the cell phone, the san disk memory of 512MB that came with the cell. constantly broke down and erased everything...
So no i have a 2gb sandisk memory stick pro duo...i bought it thru the internet and it has not failed once...so maybe it has something to do with the fact that the memories that came with these phones had issues from the beggining!
Posted by hanugro

Well, ALL memory brands can be faked. Yes you are correct that Sony brand is a popular target for faking. Why? Because Sony price is ussually higher than equivalent from other brand. This make faking it bring more profit. But to say Sandisk is not a target of faking is also very wrong. Sandisk Ultra/Extreme has a lot of fake (well there is no Sandisk M2 Ultra/Extreme yet so less fake here). When I am buying a premium/pro level memory card, I always buy from authorised dealer. For generic Sandisk (plain) then I don't mind buying from parallel importir (black market).
However even fake memory card is ussually quite robust. Their shortcoming usually is slower, less capacity than stated. Especially fake memory that come from official OEM manufacturer (well this happen unfortunately).

I think you should demand a replacement for your 512MB memory. That is clear sign of broken memory and they should replace it with no question ask. It can be actually bad from shipping (especially if using air cargo because plane has lot of static electric).

I agree, in fact what I meant by quote "Cards from legitimate manufacturers other than sony are not fake. Fake cards are a copy of a legitimate brand name (usually Sony)" is that just because it doesn't have "Sony" on it, doesn't mean it's a fake. Some people have tried to tell me "non-sony" cards are "fake". I'm saying exactly what you said ie: Fake cards don't have their own brand, they are a copy of another brand. Notice I said "usually sony", I didn't mean "always" Sony.
