I suck at T9.

So T9 has a little website about itself and they have these interactive flash games on them, teaching you how to use it. www.textfast.t9.com So i tried it and I was supposed to type "concert". Instead, I ended up with "bomb". I suck at this.

Give it time, buddy. My mom, 60 years old, had never even handled a phone until last year, yet even she is sending text messages like it's going out of fashion...

don't worry about it mate, I can use both equally as fast but prefer manual input over T9 anyway.

they are both just as easy/quick when you can use them (sending on average 40 texts per day helps)

just use what you feel comfortable with

p.s. welcome to Esato! & a nice little site you found there.

T9 is good but the predictive input on the windows mobile devices is better IMHO.

I don't write many text messages but I do write alot of emails and I have never understood why T9 has not been extended to actually show word prediction in the same way since they already have the dictionary on board

Posted by amnesia
NEC mobiles have word prediction.

I guess I've just never really understood how T9 thinks. The site tries to explain it, basically it pre-empts you and tries to guess what will come next based on a whole bunch of calculations. It all seems really cool. Now if only i could get something like that that could help me find my keys....

and thanks for the welcome

There is a better way to not only input text, but also to input without even actually touching a keyboard... It's called a WIFE who is my best friend, secretary, and the love of my life. Oh, and she finds my keys too :-) By the way, Masseur, in which way is the predictive setup better than T9? I haven't had the opportunity, as yet, to spend much time playing around with one of those neat devices.

I really hate t9. Never got used to it and i can sms very fast using manual input, so it isnt a problem.

Posted by EastCoastStar
agreed. i use manual - never gave t9 a chance

Posted by PiPod
well I'm not a fast typer, so I might just give T9 a chance. There are a few games on that site which might help me familiarize myself with the program. Hopefully I won't get too frustrated

I think most people that don't like it assume that it is impossible for such a tiny 'computer' to do all that guesswork. If you stick to the everyday vocabulary, it makes typing very fast. No way you can go that fast manually because you have to wait every now and then if you want to type two letters from the same key, which does not occur with t9.

Another thing to come over is to ignore what it shows you as long as you have not completed the word or have at least entered four or five characters. Many dislikers look at what t9 produces which is not what they want. You need to have confidence.

Eveery time I use it am a little surprised that it is so correct. It even learns to some degree.

I only wish you could edit the added words, especially to delete misspelled and rarely used ones.

you NEVER have to wait manually! if u want N and N or M and N or anything together, you don thave to wait, just push the joystick down or to the right, and you are movin on to the next letter! its easy, it becomes natural, like adding a space.

I don't know what I'd do without T9...plus with SE's phones it's quite simple.
Have to agree with EastCoastStar... I'd like to edit or delete some of the words rarely use like "strident"

Posted by PiPod
haha "strident"? I know T9 has a dictionary, but does it actually define what the words are? What does strident even mean? hahaha

Posted by defensive
definintion of strident on Google

I can't live without t9! And no way that manual input is faster than t9. You guys haven't seen me type on my phone keypad ..... T9 rocks!!

I never gave T9 a chance to ON because of my language. Is there any word in Bahasa Indonesia in T9 dictionary? I don't think so.
I always use English language menu in my SE phones (cuz menu in Bahasa Indonesia sucks!) but typing sms mostly in Bahasa Indonesia. It never cross my mind to set T9 ON even if T9 is available in Bahasa Indonesia cuz I often use many "slank" words in my language...

Posted by whizkidd
I think the ability to store new words not in the dictionary differs from phone to phone.... I wish t9 had an "add word to dictionary option" would be great...especially for slang words and stuff....

Iv never bothered with it, but some folks on mxit type flippin fast!!

any1 on mxit here?

Posted by SmasHy
Well, the only thing I find it usefull is that it helps you with misspelling the words. But it doesn't correct your grammar.

Posted by whizkidd
Lol!!
T9 was never intended as a product to improve one's grammar!

Isn't there a competitor to T9? Somethin called ezitap?
Used on moto phones i think..

I love T9 and always use it to create text. I even add punctuation and capital letters where appropriate.

I add place names to the Insert Word option, especially as many place names in NZ are in maori.

When I find a compound word that flumoxes the T9 dictionary, I use T9 to spell half the word, press the joystick and spell the other half.
Its quicker than the multi-tap alternative.

Well I think I'm getting better at this whole T9 thing. Recently my phone has been acting up, and it's really hard to take calls on it, and I've been texting instead. I've gotten noticeably faster using T9 in the past week, which is kinda cool

good good, i always use T9, much easier

Posted by neonismo
So many people shun T9 without giving it a go, or a very limited go. Multitap is not as quick but it is logically easier to use. Some people get anxious that what they tap looks visually wrong until the word is complete - and herein lies the problem for T9.

Posted by hotcha
i end up only using certain words because of the frustration of trying to get some of them.
T9 still works for me though.

Posted by PiPod
plus you can scroll through the T9 dictionary using the * key. have you guys seen the new words they added to the dictionary?

haha i haven't heard of any of them =P

I always shut off t9 on my phones as it never works for me and can type faster manually.. Esp. When texting as I text in 3 languages ...

Posted by p900 lover
The only phone i didnt use T9 with was my D500 as it kept forgeting word id input.

Posted by JwY

Its 'itap' on motorola. It predicts the word, if its wrong u just carry on.It keeps reguessing. It remembers previous words input. Names, slang and 'txt msg wrds2'. &emails and urls. So it learns! T9 is confusing, you've got to not look til the words finished.

Posted by x_lucy_x
t9 works better for me!! but only on my phones, put me on anyone elses with their own random words in the dictionary and i have nooo idea! x

Posted by methylated_spirit
I'm fluent in T9 i can do it while crossing the road. Don't even need to look at my phone to send a message any more...
