I've got a 4th Generation 40GB iPod photo, and my wife has a 4GB Silver iPod mini. My first iPod was a 2nd Generation 10gb iPod (still going strong).

The ony podcast I subscribe to is the Best of Moyles Show (link requires iTunes to be installed).

I'm interested in what the attraction is with ipod? I have music going on all the time wherever and whatever I am doing, but I have never considered ipod as an option for my music storage and playback

I hear so many stories from friends and colleagues about poor build quality, easy scratching (not just the nano). In the early days of ipod there were many complaints about poor battery perforamance and the fact that users could not change the battery

I tend to use my ipaqs, i-mates etc with large memory cards for my music and video entertainment (I have loads of music videos on my k-jam as I prefer those to just listening to music)... so what is it about the ipods?

Couldn't agree more matey . . . that's why I am NOT into this - type of gadget ! Most of the time I personally SING the song I wanted to hear, specially when taking a bath !

I wasnt a fan of ipods. I wouldn't have bought one. However, i won an ipod shuffle, and i have to say its great. I do a lot of cycling, and its small, light, durable, and the battery lasts well. I son't know if i would buy another iPod, but the Shuffle fits my needs perfectly well, even it would only have been 4th or 5th choice if i had to buy an mp3 player.

the style, simplicity, big name the menus...

i mean put it this way, would you buy a crap from 'pound store' t-shirt that are guarenteed to last no longer than a few days or a high quality (say nike) t-shirt that is stylish, well known, and high quality... its a matter of opinion really, i havent used iPod's yet, but theres a 4GB iPod nano (black) on top of my mums cupboard for christmas (yeah, i go present hunting, call me immature if you will ) and i cant wait to use it... i have 600 songs (well 450 songs, 150 quotes) at 1.2GB so im gonna get more than 1000 songs!
true about the official thing though, i guess it just gives a little push to the popularity of the thread if it gets into high post count...

I use a 3rd Gen 20GB iPod in immaculate condish, (and also, IMO the third gen is the best type of ipod style. (not necceserily functionality) (but it supports firewire!))

My favourite Podcasts are the Engadget audio, and the Diggnation Video podcast.

I'm looking possible into getting a 5th Gen iPod maybe, dunno yet.... and maybe a shuffle!

@masseur: I never had an iPod till i decided to buy one a nano a month ago, I used to share your view till then.

I'll tell you, I use my K-Jam for a LOT of things, but it will never replace my Entire music and video collection, no matter what.

I had never used an ipod before and never really considered buying one, however I recently 'won' a 4GB Ipod Nano (White) which arrived yesterday

And after playing with it for a while I really like it, It looks fantastic and the menus are fantastic to browse through which is why I believe they are so popular.
It suits me perfectly as I would never fill a 40GB and like the fact that it is so small!

how did ya win it? was it one of those annoying 'stomp the spider!' or 'shoot the duck!'?

Posted by *Jojo*
H m m m . . . 2 of the posters here LIKED the Ipod after having WON it in a raffle But prior, they are NOT that KEEN in acquiring it ! Maybe I need to WIN 1 in a raffle before finally realizing that it's a MUST have gadget - after all ! Playtime please . . . .

For me the attraction is the simplicity of the user interface + controls, the no-brainer integration with the computer (iTunes) and the design. Nobody has made a music player easier to use than Apple. Most rivals have loads of buttons and meaningless info on the screen. Anyone can use an iPod. It automatically syncs with the computer when connected and works straight out of the box... (speaking of which, even the box is better designed than most rivals players! (I'm a web/graphic designer so know a thing or two about packaging and user interface design).

In 3 years of iPod usage I've never had a single problem with poor build quality or scratching. My first iPod (still in use by my boss' son) still holds a very good charge and is (for a 3 year old device) remarkably scratchless.

Why anyone would expect an shiny thing such as an iPod to remain scratchless after being jostled around in a pocket or bag with keys and coins is beyond me! This applies equally to mobile phones, iPaqs, iMates, PDAs etc.

In the early days it wasn't easy to change the battery, and like most rechargeable batteries they had a life of 2-3 years. However, everybody I know who had an early iPod has since upgraded to a newer model, not because of battery life, but because of added features/capacity etc.

Yes, you can use your iPaq or iMate to play music but could non-techies get a music track playing in a couple of seconds, and then locate others in a similar amount of time?

Also now, there's also the 'cool' factor. For some reason, the press have picked up on the iPod as being the player to have. You see them in music videos, your favourite celebs are pictured with them, even the Queen has one!

It's like all these people who pay over the odds for branded jeans or trainers (not me though). If you were seen by your peers in cheap-o alternatives you'd be ridiculed!

Masseur will know about the Aussie phrase 'tall poppy syndrome' - which is already starting with the iPod... The media and press hype something up until its very popular, only then to turn on it and start putting it down.

Now that the iPod has become so popular, you also see more negative press as well as the positive.

So overall for me - its SIMPLICITY, DESIGN & INTEGRATION...

No it was not one of those lol
I didn't really win it, thats just the easiest way to explain it!

I got it from one of these Matrix Sites that everyone says does not work! I've had two phones and now this so I'm happy

Yep, the Queen has one lookhere and here!

Apple iPod takes usability prize

Apple's iPod Click Wheel has been selected for a UK usability award.

Inaugurating World Usability Day, the UK Usability Professionals' Association held the UKUPA Awards 2005 on November 3 to recognise the most usable products and websites.

A panel of ten experts assembled a short list for the prize, which was voted on by members of the UPA, reports Usability News.

"We need stuff that takes you along the curve," said awards presenter Bill Thompson. "Stuff that's designed to be learnable and doesn't keep reminding you how elegant and smart it is by getting in the way."

Apple's iPod took the prize for best consumer product.

Engadget reports:

iDoom now available on iPod nano

iPod nano owners lube up your chainsaws ‘cause iDoom is now available for your fragging kicks. Check check, check out the vid ‘cause performance is rockin’ compared to the previous release we saw running on older gen iPods. Caution: this requires iPodLinux (podzilla) which is a fairly risk free install in our experience but could void your warranty. The 5G (video) iPod is not supported nor is sound … yet. But what does that matter to you, soldier … you’re the only human left alive!

Anyone have the guts to try this out?

@maddav: Cool! what color?

Btw, iDoom uses podzilla(iPod Linux), you will loose your warranty by installing podzilla on your ipod.

In order to use iDoom, you need iPod Linux installed on your ipod.

What are the risks?

Step 1: Make sure that a version for your iPod is available here

Step 2: Download the installer (for windows), from here or from here (for mac)

Step 3: Follow these instructions, to install iPod linux in place of apple's ipod OS.

Step 4: Load it up! Now that you have linux up and running, you may want to install programs like web browsers, games, video/audio players. Get them here.

iPod Linux was initially made so that people who had the older 1G/2G/3G/1G mini/2G mini/4G color etc. coukd watch video's on their iPod's, but as you can guess, the developers soon realised the power of linux and started making other software too.

Please Note: You MUST read : What are the risks? before installing it.

Posted by Jools
Just a quick correction to your Step 3: you don't "install iPod linux in place of apple's ipod OS" - it is installed alongside the iPod OS. None of your music or other files on the iPod are touched by installing Linux.

You can easily switch between the iPod OS and Linux by resetting the iPod and choosing which OS to boot from in the new boot menu.

Ig the 5G 60gb much thicker than the 30gb?

Posted by Jools
According to the tech specs here the 60gb is 3mm thicker.

Posted by haynesycop
Joolsg4 do you have a video ipod at all. Would love a review if possible if you have one.

Hoping to get a video ipod soon, i was also wondering whether the universal dock will work with the ipod video?

It says it is on the apple website but when i looked at one in selfridges the box didnt mention the video ipod.

Just wanted to clarify this.

Cheers

Posted by Jools
I don't have the new iPod (with video) just my 1 year old iPod photo! I'm gonna stick with that for the time being as I can watch stuff on my PSP (although the extra capacity of the iPod sure would be handy, instead of expensive momory sticks!)

The universal dock is compatible with all iPods - it (and all iPods) come with adapters to fit every model.

Possibly the packaging for the dock was made before the new iPod came out.

Posted by haynesycop
Thanks for clearing that up, the dock and remote would be very handy to have. I just hope griffin release an italk for it very soon then i will take the plunge and buy one.

It is very annoying how non of the accessories work especially the remote, hopefully apple will release another version soon.

I think you should too and do a review for all us ipod lovers

Posted by Jools
Here's the new iTrip for the iPod nano

And here's the one for any iPod with a dock connector (including the 5G video iPod)

An iTalk can't be far behind...

Posted by haynesycop
Yeah! I saw the new LCD itrip looks good but don't you think it is weird being at the bottom, it looks alot better at the top but obviously that isn't possible.

Hopefully an italk is next then i will take the plunge and get the 30gb video ipod.

Posted by Glenny
man they dont just do the job, but the iTrip looks so good! Im loving every minute of the new Ipod nano line-up

Posted by Debu
@glenny: yes, the nano is amazing. The first reaction of most people is: "Is that it?" Its just soooo tiny.

Ps. Did I mention just how tiny the nano is?

With regards to the remote, I wouldn't get my hopes up. The 'menu' function does not work with the ipod. I think it was primarily designed for the new iMac G5 with Frontrow. I watched the webcast when Steve Jobs launched the new iPod, iMac G5 etc., and the remote function was quite impressive with the G5. You can go through all the menus and functions of Frontview, and it seemed slick. However the functionality is not the same for use with iPod+Dock+Remote. Amongst many threads see here:

http://discussions.info.apple[....]jspa?threadID=168038&tstart=15

On a general note to anyone else, I'm really happy with my new iPod, apart from: (2nd one now, first one returned due to scratching issue). Btw if you're bothered by scratches then keep the plastic film on the iPod until you can get a clear skin or case. On my first iPod 5th gen I took the film off it as soon as I opened the box. I was EXTREMELY careful when handling it, and used the included case, in fact I hardly even touched the front of it. However after 3 days there were loads of hairline scratches on it, 90% of them being vertical (caused by inserting and extracting it from the included case, which was not often). Of course these weren't major deep scratches, but I find it irritating to have a whole lot of tiny scratches on a device (which I have taken great care of) after only a couple of days.

On the bright side, when I telephoned Apple they offered me a replacement after 30 seconds (I suppose they want to avoid the negative press associated with the Nano). I have now received my replacement, and am awaiting a screen-protector I have ordered.

The scratching issue aside, this is a superb device. Great sound quality, super crisp video and generally perfect. Even when I output video on a 32inch screen it looks good (it's not dvd quality obviously, but it's clear and watchable).

All in all I could wholeheartedly recommend the new iPod. The functionality is great as is the design. If scratching bothers you, then fit a screen-protector from day one, if not then just enjoy it

Woohoo! I am going to order my ipod video tomorrow

Just thought i would let people know (especially those who are students or for people who have an nus card) that you can get the following:

apple 30gb ipod video - £219
apple universal dock - £25
apple remote - £19

This little lot will only set you back £218.55 all you need to do is go to the apple store for education stating your college/university and then proceed to checkout and enter this promotional code IMSFPAJT54.

That means you get the whole lot for 45p cheaper than the ipod alone.

Also i was thinking of getting it engraved as seen as it if free. But i don't want to make it too personal, what to you think, should i just leave it blank?

Bargain!!!
