I know that lots of new GSM operators in USA work only at GSM 850. But the following question is only about AT&T that operates both at GSM 1900 and GSM 850.
QUESTION: whether there are any places in USA where AT&T operates
only at GSM 850? Or is it mainly GSM 850 + GSM 1900 together?

at&t is now cingular (blue) and it is 850. as you know, cingular bought AT&T, they merged, now i believe it is only 850. i dont think they use 1900.

AT&T used both the 1900 and 850 band as did Cingular. However, Cingular bought AT&T and is now pushing more and more the 850 band because of it's higher attenuation (Reaches farther, better quality). In a few instances there is only the 850 band available, but depending where you live and use your phone you might not need the 850 band. But some peeps posted here that they did not get any good reception in some spots with their 1900 band phone and claimed only the 850 band was available. I think this is more true on the east coast of the US.

you all that are using k750/w800i on Cingular blueANDred (or just cingular), how is your reception?

Thank you for the answers. So, if I'm planning to travel to the USA, is it better to have a quad-band phone with me? (By the way, as a client of Estonian GSM operator EMT, I may use networks of Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile.)
But as I know, not a few Americans themsleves are using also "usual" tri-band phones like T68i, T630i, K700, K750i, W800i, P9XX etc. Don't they complain about bad reception and puny coverage?

no... i nkwo ther t630 and k700 have 850 coverage... if you come with a triband phone, you will probobly be finee

living in nyc the 850(800) band is much better, my cingular phone gets much better reception in 850 than it does on 1900(t-mobile)
