Has anyone ordered the new iPod? (I have)

I ordered it the day after it was released, and am still waiting. Meanwhile I have been converting videos to put on it. It can play regular mp4 video, but the format Apple is using and promoting is encoded with h.264 (I think it is also called mpeg4/mp4 version 10, not too sure), which I wasn't previously familiar with. It looks great when played, really clear, and the bonus is that the file size is significantly reduced. I encoded a 242MB video clip to the h.264 codec, and the output file was 107MB ! plus it looked even better than the original.

Anyway, I'm really excited about the 5th gen iPod withvideo, what do you guys think?

I think it looks great and I want a black one. Too bad for all those people who bought a nano...

Posted by Glenny
what do you mean too bad? what if someone just wanted a slimline mp3? and the price should be taken into hand aswell. Im still getting a mini because of the cheap price, and its a good size for me, not too small, not too big, but im sure ill get bored of the black and white screen quick... but then again its music, so itll be in my pocket..

I knew id cause controversy by saying that. I just mean, people always want to have the latest gadgets etc and the nano was released before the new one was even anounced. I just think this is unfair as people may have wanted the latest Ipod but now they have the nano, there is already a newer version being released.

My new 60gb is in the mail (edu discount baby!) it pays to still be in school part way.

@hotcha

When did you order yours, and have you had any info on when you'll get it? I ordered mine immediately after the announcement (12th Oct.), and my info says it'll ship on 24th Oct + 3-9 business days shipping... Which is frankly laughable, as I have seen on ipod forums that some people have already received them (in UK), and that Apple Regent Street will have them this weekend. It really is s**t customer service by Apple, as they told me the quickest way to get the ipod was by web-order, and now it turns out I could have saved the trouble and just gone to the Apple shop. The way it looks now, I may not get it until well into November.

I Got mine today .

I took some pic's :

Compared to the tiny Nano (mine is a scatched up black one ):

Posted by JiggyJaggy
I thought it was a lot bigger than that. Puts the old ipod photos to shame doesnt it!

Still a big price diff between the ipod nano and the ipod video!

Posted by haynesycop
I like it but the fact that the old accessories dont work puts me right off, and that the new accessories will have to go in the dock connector at the bottom is just odd, wont look right at all.

They should go in the top.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
True but for someone who doesnt/hasnt owned any Ipod(s) before its hevan sent. Its so slim, and doesnt it hold 40 and 60gb?

@ Debu: How much did you pay for it? Is it the 40/60gb version?

I suppose so, it comes in 30gb or 60gb, black and white versions. I have a standard 20gb at the moment but would love a video ipod, if anyone wants to buy me a present

So you going to get one jiggyjaggy?

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Ahhh..well I just clicked 4 or so buttons which means I just ordered one as you asked me that question! lol.

I was thinking what to do: Dilema:

I have a car, which I wanted an Ipod for, was thinking the old photo ipod. but then I thought get a video one, it actually fits in the gap between cd player and stereo flap in the TT...perfect!

Dilema 2: Wanted a small ipod for the train/running, was thinking shuffle, but decided it would really bug me If I cant see what song im looking at! AGGGhHHH! So i decided for the nano. Basically the shuflle is a W800i with a 2 gb card, so its pointless!

So you bought a nano and a video ipod you rich bitch

Jut kidding, me jealous!!!

Posted by JiggyJaggy
No just got the nano, the price on the nano just dropped 10-15% now the video is out.

Rule number one: I will PM it to you miss.copper...

Posted by Debu
@JiggyJaggy: It cost me 19k inr, That's bout $170, for the 30GB model. Plus Put in $29.99 for the QuickTime Pro 7, which is required for converting your existing video's to the ipod mp4 format. (You can use any other software, but the quicktime video's look great on it).

2 questiosn for you/anyone:

1) Can you hook up the ipod filled with videos to a tv and use as a mbile dvd library?

2) How many dvd's can you hold (approx) and is the quality near/actual dvd quality?

Thanks

Posted by haynesycop
Hmm not sure there is a universal dock which has been released and a remote so if you get a cable to go into the back of the dock and into your tv then i suppose it could be possible.

The dock and remote are sweet!!!

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Can you not plug AV cables straight into the ipod itself?

Posted by haynesycop
Yeah!

Probably but the dock is loverly!

Posted by Debu
@J: You can playback the vid's on the TV with the A/V cable, but you have to buy that seperately. A 3-hour movie takes about 1000MB.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Dude thats 1 gb per film, so thats 30 "ripped" uh hum dvds from your pc! Shamone! Thats one corner of blockbuster on your ipod!

Where do I sign for one? lol

And me!!!

Had a look in the apple shop in Bluewater last weekend at the new ipod. actually got it right this time (5th time lucky) shame the battery doesnt last very long when watching videos

you'l have to charge it between each movie you watch.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
thats good enough for me, i normally fall asleep by the end of the film anyway! lol

Hey! does anyone know if the griffin italk and new itrip lcd are compatible with the ipod video.

The italk is a must there's this teacher at college and she rabbits on sooooo fast

Posted by haynesycop
Lame the italk isn't GRR!!! does anyone know of anything else that can do the same job, record lectures/lessons.

It seems the new ipod is compatible but not the italk surely griffin would release another version.

Griffin and Belkin are planning new products for the iPod w/Video (I'm assuming the Nano too), and since the iPod w/Video supports 44KHz WAV recordings, you should get much better recording quality!

As for the topic, my 60GB White 5G iPod should arrive sometime between Monday & Thursday.

Posted by Debu
While mine doesn't seem quite as scratch prone as my Black Nano, It does seem more scratch prone then my old 2G White 20 GB. Which BTW, I used without any protection of any kind, and was very minimally scratched when I sold it last week.
