MS Duo corruption problem with R1N035

Posted by fantonald
Well, I tried once more to transfer a bunch of MP3's. Sure enough, it failed. But I discovered something interesting:

How you disconnect, eject or whatever doesnt matter!

I found the following log entry in the system event log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: 24.10.2005
Time: 01:29:16
User: N/A
Computer: *****
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
(snipped)

There were 2 additional event 51's later, but it is the first that messes up the transfer.

All files copied before the event shows up fine in the phone, but the file being copied at the time of the event is gone, just the filename shows up in the phone. When trying to play this file, the next file(s) transfered after this file is played instead for the same duration as the vanished file would have played.

The rest of the files are unaccessible, but I'm sure they're there since parts of hidden files were played.

These id-51 events began to show up right after I upgraded to R1N035.

Do those with problems by any chance run VIA chipsets/usb controllers ? Or are anyone with problems running Intel Chipsets ?

There are known problems between XP SP2 usb drivers and VIA chipsets/usb controllers, which could lead to event ID 51's, and possible transferproblems.

I'm on VIA and I've got the problem...I'm gonna take a look at the MS link above.

Posted by stelvio
just formatted by memory stick. is it normal to only have 467mb out of 512mb of available memory after formatting? that sounds like an awful lot of system files. Mine is SanDisk. a check on the memory stick properties says it has 490mb capacity, with 467 available memory. i loaded 233mb of songs, and 234 still available.

numb is correct - VIA's implementation of USB has always given me problems. I'm now using nVidia's nForce 4 chipset and it's 100% fine. I'm still on R1L, and staying thay way until a better firmware is released!

Running updated intel 925X chipset drivers here and still have problems. I will try to use my other PC which currently has no SE software later.

just out of curiosoty how many of you guys are using PC's that you look after?

defrag, use 3rd party reliable backup/imaging software and keep updated to the very latest, wilst having a failed update?

Posted by Burn-X
Update my anti-spyware, anti-virus and WinXP every month or so. Firmware on most of my PC hardware are current as well along with their drivers. Don't really check these often.

I don't see how these affect a firmware update on a handphone. I say this because I updated to R1N035 without a hitch. Updated to R1NA005 and I was smacked with the corruption bug. Ouch.

Like everyone else here, I will like to know the real cause of this.

Posted by numb
This is certainly one of the strangest most irregular bugs we've seen so far.

Some dont have it at all, others were hit with it on R1N035, and burn-x didnt get it untill R1NA005

And still we havent been able to find a commom denominator.

With that kind of irregularity, its no wonder that S//E technicians have not been able to post a fix yet.

Posted by Leviath
this is what we all been trying to get to...

maybe it is not as simple as a common denominator...

I remember a that if you work your way backwards from what isnt causing the issues, what your left in the end is probably most likely the cause...

Posted by numb
true, many problems are not solved by actually focusing specifically on the problem, but by exclusion methodic where you exclude all the things that cannot be causing the problem, untill your left with only one thing.

Posted by soleruk
updates or not,i still have that problems

Posted by max_wedge
I know this is a long shot, but if write caching has been enabled on the drive assigned to the phone cable connection it could possibly cause problems such as this.....maybe the peeps with problems all have write caching enabled? (long shot I know, but worth mentioning)

Posted by cloroforme
one of the times windows said something wrong about caching. how to disable this?

Posted by max_wedge
go into the properties of the drive in device manager. Click the policies tab and untick the write cache checkbox.

Posted by poshea
I doubt this is a PC configuration issue. I expereince the same file coruption on my Mac Powerbook running OSX 10.4.2 My unbranded phone came with R1L002. I transfered files for a few weeks to my 1G Sony Memory Stick on my mac using the bundled USB cable without a hitch. Since updating to R1N035 on the SE site on a PC @ work - I have been unable to transfer files without problems - even after format and factory reset.

Posted by Olga
I have the same thing with Fedora Core 4. Before updating, transferring files was not a problem and everything went just like it should but not anymore.

Posted by etaab
I doubt it Max.

My phone was fine for the first month on the latest firmware. Then suddenly one day all my files were unplayable.

This is a very annoying bug. If it takes SE another 2 months to pull their finger out and fix it, they'll probably lose my custom to Nokia or Samsung forever.

They screwed us around with the video bitrate for 3 months, im not prepared to have to wait another 2-3 months for this to be fixed. This is a major problem IMO, which affects the Walkman functionality of the W800i aswel, which again IMO is just not acceptable.

If it does take them 3 months to release new firmware, thats 6 months of phone usage we've lost (3 months camera, 3 months file corruption). The average phone life span before people update their phone is 8 months.

That leaves us with 2 months of proper phone problem free usage. Thats not acceptable for a phone so expensive as the K750i !

@etaab
I totaly agree with you.

Posted by max_wedge
etaab, yeah I didn't think it was likely just mentioned it incase.

I feel for ya, and your R1N probs. I'd be equally pissed, allthough the cable probs would have had me returning the phone to have R1L put back. Basically in my view if the camera doesn't work and/or the usb cable doesn't work, that's not performing as advertised. I'd make them replace the handset until I get one that works.

Hopefully SE will get onto this R1N stuff-up soon. They've already pulled R1N from SEUS, then put it back with nothing fixed. Hopefully they'll do better next time.

I'm keen to get R1N for the bluetooth ask once permissions, but I've been holding off after seeing the probs that eventuated with R1N.

I too have had problems, but they seem a little different. I have a sandisk 1g card that works in the phone but when I try to use a card reader(since I hate the USB connection with the phone that constantly drops, or takes five tries to connect) it freezes my computer. I cannot even get to a point where I could see what data is on the card. Dispite this I am still able to listen to MP3 files in the phone. Does anyone know what the deal is?

Posted by OliT
Using the 512Mb Sandisk card that came with my phone and the USB cable, running on a XP2500+, Nforce2 Ultra-400, newest chipset drivers and SP1, using standard drag & drop transfer and Disk2Phone I was unable to make more than 6 songs end up on the phone from ~460Mb of material that was supposed to be transferred. The transfer took 25 minutes with D2P and it confirmed it as done, I used the safe removal and removed the cable, only to find that 420Mb was still free on the card. It seems like it managed to transfer the first 6-something songs in the transfer list. No warnings occured in the system logbook. I did notice that D2P seemed to start from 50% on the songs that it couldn't transfer, shortly after finishing the last song.

Posted by OliT
Update: Tried transferring another 6 songs to the phone, Only 1 actually made it to the phone, however 5 other songs now appeared, all of them transferred at a previous time, when 6 songs showed up. This problem is really interesting, the songs actually being present on the phone, just not showing up, appearing when a new batch is sent.

Edit: Been transferring batches of 6 songs for a while now, using safe removal between the batches and checking in the walkman player if they showed up, it seems like they all manage to make it on to the phone.

Edit2: It seems as if songs starting with the number 09 gets their tags corrupted, in two separate albums/batches the songs numbered 09 refuses to show the tag in the playlist.

Edit3: Tried transferring two batches of 7 songs, one failed (4 making it to the phone), second one worked.

Edit4: Batches of 6, drag and drop, safe removal between the batches, 100% success rate. More than 6 and it becomes random (as far as I can see, haven't performed enough testing yet, will continue tomorrow) which songs, and how many that actually end up on the card.

Edit5: The errors only seem to occur due to a too large number of files, the amount of data doesn't seem to be involved, I transferred batches from around 20 mb up to batches of 70-80 mb.

interesting test results there OliT.

This is definately an incarnation of the R1N usb transfer bug.

@drj, your problem sounds like a corrupt memory card (reformat it using the phone and retest). However the fact your usb cable connection crashes may also indicate you have the R1N bug as well. I'd format the card then retest the cable connection - it may be okay if the problem is just with the card.

Definitely format that card or try another one before writing off the phone.

Hi,
I'm having, I think, a similar problem with my new w800i - when I try to copy music using disc2phone or drag/drop it seems to have worked but, when I look on the phone only some, if any of the files have actually made it. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this part before though - sometimes when I go to copy more tracks, not only do they behave in the same manner, but any tracks that have been copied successfully previously can vanish, completely at random.
I'm very confused. Whats the best move to make - and if it is to reformat/reset, exactly how do I do that? Oh, and having tried putting tracks directly onto memory card though integral laptop card reader, it seems to copy fine but when I turn the phone on none of the tracks are there - album folders might be, but they've got nothing in them. I've tried to update the firmware, but it failed twice and now as soon as I start trying to use seus, it tells me 'there is currently no service for devices belonging to your operator.' Please, somebody, help!!

Hi,

exactly the same problems here.. - USB transfer worked fine on previous F/W now it's a real pain. Seems a lot slower even just for a few files too. Tried it on about 5 different PC's - has same problem on all of them.

In comparison I can transfer 130MB of MP3's from a USB sitck in 30 seconds or so but trying to to transfer them to my K750i starts ok but quickly shows over 60 minutes in the Windows copy dialog....

Am really annoyed with this. - am on 02 Uk so waited for ages for this new firmware as it is....

Can anyone tell me how I go about downgrading the f/w??

Cheers,
Bennyboo

This bug is really a pain in the ass!!!! Many of my photos stored in the MS were corrupted, im afraid of losing everthing!!!

I have no doubt this is an f/w related problem... everybody, including me, get this annoying malfunction after upgrading to r1n035... i simply cant accept the fact of losing my files when already stored or even when transfering via usb cable!

Damn SE's slacker programmers

I have a k750i converted to w800's w/ r1n035 and I'm really considering get back to K750's R1L002 f/w

I had the problem with transfering music to W800 after upgrading firmware, MP3s disappeared, slow transfer. Tried different computers and different Duo cards, still transfer failed and slowed down in windows and with Disc2phone. Today I shut down the phone, removed the battery, replaced battery, restarted and have so far transfered 3 albums with Disc2phone with no problem whatsoever. Is this a fix or am I a lucky son of a b*t*h?

Posted by etaab
Probably just lucky.

I've done pretty much the same, and what other people say fix this problem. However, usually a week down the line the same bug comes back.

Mines been fine so far though since the original bug reared its head, but im sure it'll still come back if i over use the USB cable to transfer items.

Posted by antimon
Exact same problem here...
It's funny that still there's no fix from SE

Anyone knows how can i downgrade my firmware?

Posted by womack
my phone has this annoying problem, that when i tried to copy files across, the data would overwrite something already in there - and then when i play the old songs (the new ones dont show up) the new song will play from various parts of the song. the only way i can fix it is to delete everything and copy the folder across fresh

Posted by siwatkins
Has anyone been reporting the problem to SE? I got a response back today saying there were no known issues with the firmware release! I pointed them to this site, but it made me wonder how many people are just posting here about the issue rather than letting SE know?

Posted by rambalu80
I have the same problem, but I figured that if I transfer a smaller number of files each time, it works fine. I guess there is no solution but wait for the next update to have a fix.

SE do know. They just deny all knowledge of any bugs whenever they reply, it saves face.

They did the same about the video quality issue.

I got this answer from SE:

Recently there is a problem in update service. Please refer to our technical services for correct update process.

I did report the problems to SE in Denmark, but no response…

Hello,

As many of our forum colleagues, I' suffering this disgusting problem.

I just liked to ask if somebody has noticed this point, and I don't knot if it's remarkable:

With the latest firmware (R1NA005) the two hidden files in the memory stick are empty (I mean, MEMSTICK.IND and MSTK_PRO.IND), whereas I think that I can remember that in R1L002, both files contained some information. Am I wrong? Is this something that can provoke the buggy behavior?

By the way, with an external card reader I've got no problem.

Posted by tavueni
I had EXACTLY the same problems with my K750i so I completely sympathise. I wasn't willing to put up with and SE fobbed my off when I went through SE support.

I just read up and then went to http://www.davinciteam.com and downloaded the software and firmware to downgrade my firmware back to K750 R1L002 and I have not had a problem since. The flashing application and firmware download are very simple and straight forward to use and I just need my PC and the original data cable that came with the phone.

The best thing is that it only cost my 10 Euros (£6) and about 1hr or so of my time to understand how to do it.

People can try it at their own risk but since I did it, there is now a pretty consise tutorial on the steps to do it can be found at: http://www.seuniverse.com/step1.php

All I can say is that it worked for me and I'm happy I did it. Might help some other fellow sufferers. I'm planning to upgrade my K750->W800 when a stable red version of the firmware comes out. There is a Red version of R1N035 for the W800 firmware out there but I've heard the problems are the same.

Best of luck.

Greetings.
Interesting thread, glad to see I'm not alone.

Got a new W800i yesterday and have been trying with varying degrees of success to transfer music to the Memory Stick

Anyway, I'm sure I must be missing the obvious, but where on the phone can I see what firmware it is using?

Also could someone give a make and model number for a card reader they are using with the kind of memory stick in a W800i?

I've looked at a few, they just list "Memory Stick" in their specs. does that include memory stick pro duo?

Cheers.

Posted by CanOfGuiness
Doh, apologies.
Just read the thread below this one
My firmware is R1N035.

Posted by louis85
The only problem with my K750 upgraded to w800 R1N035 is that when i send pic from my computer to the phone nothing else and music transfer is working just fine and its alot faster then its was with R1L or something.

this is the only Bug i have on this phone but i talked with SE in sweden

They said its a known problem and it will be fixed but they didnt say when

As said in this thread: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=92737 , I've tried to activate the "Optimize for perfomance" option and so far so good, i have uploaded 2 entire mp3 albums without problems. U guys that try out plz report the results here...maybe its just luck again...

Posted by StuPC
"Optimising for Performance" did work for me for a while, but things have, if anything got worse now. I've spent literally hours trying to load just 5-6 albums onto my phone!
The only way I've found to reliably transfer files so far is to "eject" the drive between transferring each album (not just unplugging the phone from the PC, tell Windows to "Safely remove hardware", then unplug the phone, the plug it back in and transfer another folder.

It's a stupid way to have to do things but it's working...

Posted by shanespencer
I found the easiest way to deal with this problem (for now) is to buy a card reader. I picked one up today for 75RMB (about £5), and transferred over 90 songs onto my phone in one go, without any hitch at all.

Don't bother trying to find a Windows-based solution, just get a card reader!

the optimize for perfomance option did work very well for me, i didnt get corrupted files since i set that option... and as reported in the previous thread i mentioned, you have to set safely remove this hardware always before u disconect your device. By the way i really think to buy a card reader is not the best solution as u have to get your memory stick off every time u want to transfer a few files, and this is really a pain in the ass...

I agree that it's troublesome, taking the card out, putting it into the adapter, sticking the adapter into the reader and then inserting the reader into the PC, but the day before I got my reader, I transferred those 90 songs onto my phone, and that took me an hour. Once they were on, I found that half of them would only play half way, and then the walkman would exit - they were corrupted.

Putting the 90-odd songs onto the card using the reader took about 80 seconds. In the long run, it saved me a lot of time, and gave me peace of mind.

However, to each their own, I guess. I like using the reader, because I don't mind putting in an extra 30 seconds of effort if it means I'll have my files on my phone first time - guaranteed.

Posted by quietfool
I have an integral card reader in my laptop, which recognises the card just fine but when I try to transfer music - same problem as via usb. Perhaps someone can suggest a specific reason for this, but if not I'm loath to buy a separate card reader in case I'm throwing money after the same problem. I've also been through the farce that is SE support, and got a number of emails trying to imply that they've never heard of the problem, and that it must be something to do with the way I'm operating my computer. Increasingly unimpressed.

I use a card reader too but i do concern about damaging that card slot cover of phone. But it is really faster.
