P970 == P990 without keyboard, and shorter. sounds much more promising!

Well, as the subject suggests, upon reading the review at mobile-review (here: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-p990-en.shtml ), i noticed the following couple of sentences:

" Sony Ericsson decided on making an All-In-One smartphone to compete with all devices at once. Short term effect may be reached, however, in half a year we can expect a version of the P990 without a QWERTY-keypad. This device will be about two cm shorter and will come closer to the K750 in height."

Now this sounds much more to my tastes, and as the people at mobile-review sound fairly clued up on insider knowledge, i'd say it's a fairly good source.

If such a phone is going to be released, it will definately be the phone of choice for me...

Anyone got more info on this?

Cheers, Daz.

There is a rumour that this is already in development and will be 3G - one of a few 3G that are in development at the moment.

I am hearing conflicting views though.

Another quote said were not going to enter the mid-range market for smartphones as Nokia has already flooded this segment but, having said this, they have been known to surprise us before.

I don't see any risk in them bringing one out, they need a foothold there at least.

Posted by dazbradbury
I would prefer it if they could take out the 3G "chip" so to speak, and make the phone smaller.

Those are my gripes with the p990, the keyboard and size/weight. If they could take out the keyboard and remove 3G and even wi-fi, but keep the rest of the functionality, maybe add a 5G jog-dial...

That would be my ideal spec.

Posted by has33
Ya & add edge instead as 2/3 of d world still dont support 3G but more than 1/2 of d world will b supporting edge by d time it comes out...that way 1 less cam & so reduction in cost but good gprs speed...some more links pls

Posted by dazbradbury
that's a good point, getting rid of the front camera would reduce the size too...

I really want it to be as thin as possible, and the width/height really being roughly the screen size...

Posted by hotcha
Twould be much easier to fit in pockets that way. Right o.

Could someone make a photoshoped version of how this phone will look like??

Posted by govigov
Even though i may not be able to afford it, i would like EDGE in it

Well, if there's one thing Ericsson has done in the past is announce a "killer" phone months in advance, then after its release... suddenly announce a BETTER version that's already available a few months after. SE did the same with the W800 and W900 recently.

Ericsson's tactic in the past was to "launch" their next big thing...

R520 and T39 .... big launch... CNN coverage, etc... The first small triband, Bluetooth, GPRS, Lithium Polymer GSM phones on the market... all under 20mm thick. Everyone was excited... after the launch... and a few days after...out of the blue... the T68 was suddenly available on the market as well! Everything the R520 and T39 had... PLUS a color screen, and optional camera. *The R520 and T39 also had camera options back then but they weren't as popular due to their grayscale screens*

Fast forward to today... W800... "First walkman phone"... with the promise of the "Coming soon" W500 versions. Then out of the blue, the W900 comes along.

It's been and Ericsson tactic...and quite honestly, I like it. Maybe it works for them. So I wouldn't be surprised if they had a sleeper P990 that's ready for public release already.

**Had it not been for Ericsson's financial problems and Sony buying into them, Ericsson's cameraphone component provider would've been Canon. The P-series would've also sported an SD slot instead**

Thinking about this, my contract ends in december, and i definately want a new phone by then, so don't think i can wait for the p990, let alone this much improved version. (If it exists...)

anyone got more info?

May make a photoshopped version if i get the time,

Daz.

Posted by BobaFett
@jp very nice and wise post. lets hope that sonyERICSSON will be able for such a revolution aswell.

Posted by dazbradbury
Ok, here is a very quick photoshopped version... look's a bit disproportionate, think SE would need to reshape a little...

Posted by pachy
Yes, thats a bit closer to utopia, a P998

Posted by moneyone
I like P990 but I would remove keyboard and make a bigger screen. That would be great for me.

Posted by pachy
moneyon, i can remove the keyboard for you, however, making the screen bigger is not possible with hacksaw.

Posted by dazbradbury
not sure if people noticed, but with the shorter version, i had to shorten the keypad, otherwise in flip-close mode the screen would a different size, and from a software point of veiw i doubt they'd do that.

So really, if we want a shorter version, we're going to have to have a shorter keypad....

I would probably use it in flip-removed mode anyway, but for people that want a flip i can see this as a bit of a problem... We know how people always complain that they have fat fingers...

from http://www.clubsonyericsson.c[....]f-rumoured-mini-p990-the-p970/

As pointed by Mobile-review some weeks ago, Sony Ericsson may be working on a reduced-size version of the P990 without the Qwerty keypad but same touchscreen, UIQ 3.0 interface and rest of features, and what you see above is a computer generated image of a possible design (perhaps based on the real deal?). UCSE forum member Raymondtly claims it won’t have 3G and Wi-Fi, and the word Walkman appears several times in the unreadable article he found the photo in, all of it making sense for a less business, more youth oriented smartphone. I dare to say it might sport a better camera, since a graphic chipset capable of dealing with a 3 megapixel camera is alredy present in the W900. Please SE, call it P200 once and for all!

Posted by dazbradbury
That looks f***in sweet....

If that phone ever comes out, i will DEFINATELY be getting one!

Amazing design, and potentially the best P series phone ever...

come on SE, get on with it and get it into production!

Cheers for the info!

That middle photo looks almost IDENTICAL to an old Sony M series phone that came with the MiniDisc remote control. I believe the phone I'm talking about was for Europe only and was THE FIRST to support the Memory Stick slot! Not the Duo because it was 4+years ago.

Its very close to this phone ...

@prom1...

Definately, the pics look like the old z5/z7...

And as I always the thought the Z5 was one of the best phone's ever made, maybe that is why i'm so hopefull of this model...

Obviously the z5 was much smaller, but the design is still magnificent.

Posted by gregface
whats the point in the flip?

you have to open it to get to the keypad! pointlessness

Posted by dazbradbury
Well, it would provide some level of protection for the screen for one.

Secondly, it looks amazing. lol.

I've always used my P series phones with the flip off anyway...

Oh, and i'm assuming the jog-dial will provide quite alot of functionality in flip closed mode if this system was incorperated...

Posted by has33
Awesome is what I'd say.
Now all I'd like SE to do is make it happen along with edge & a 3MP cam.
LOL...My 1st phone was the Z5.

Posted by brix25
Yeah, this phone was never released.

Posted by Mad_Bob
It looks the TITS! pittly about the WiFi, but if it is aimed at the middle market then i can understand why, I could deal with it though to get a reduced size P.... WTF do we do now though, the P990 comes and and what? do we get it or wait. Lol. DeJa Vous.

Posted by dazbradbury
Exactly, am totally undecided as to what to do when my contract runs out... Think i will just have to get the best phone at that time, (in a month)... And then upgrade when the p990 comes out, then again when and if this p970 comes out...

it's gonna be the only way to keep me sane...!

Posted by Mad_Bob
I think so, I normally hev to contracts and drop the oldest one to the cheapest line rental available, this allows me to get 2 upgrades a year.

My contract runs out in about april (I can pay it off before that if need be). I will have to get the P990 providing there is no confirmed release dates of this new one) then upgrade later. If there are confirmed dates I will wait.

the flip is superfluous in this formfactor. Without the flip , the phone is basically very similar to an XDA mini (but with better camera and uiq3 instead of windows mobile, and of course excellent ergonomics and reliability of SE)

I'd rather see this phone developed without a flip altogether and just use a touchscreen number pad (aka xda mini). Leave the flip for P990 with the full qwerty.

Posted by funkyfrog
Nice, but not prepared to sacrifice UTMS and wifi for it. Also a massive fan of the Z5/Z7 series, still use my Z7 occasionally when I don't want to take an expensive phone out (usually when I know I'm going to get trashed!)

Yes SE - develop this for all of us no-flip users.

yes it would make a reasonably small handset then but still retain a qwerty via the touch pad. Or even just use character recognition.

Posted by dazbradbury
I don't know how many of you have used P series phone's, but in the past they have all had the ability to have the flip removed and have a virtual flip...

so that's not an issue at all for non-flip users...

Best of both worlds!

Oh, and regarding the above post, they all have had, and will no doubt still have virtual keyboards too...

[ This Message was edited by: dazbradbury on 2005-11-15 17:48 ]

Posted by max_wedge
yeah, I'm familiar with the P series. I just meant if you preferred to use character recognition over qwerty on the touch screen you have a choice. I realise they all have qwerty's.

Regarding removing the flip, I'd still like to see it removed altogether (on a P970 - obviously not on the P990 which should retain the flip imo). If you don't have to allow for the hinge mechanism the handset can be even smaller.

Posted by dancingfate
I still can't understand why P970 won't have WIFI.
I hope that P970 will have the same features as P990 minus QWERTY and 3G only, the rest is the same.
I remember some reviews in my local magazines comparing P900/P910 to Nokia 9500 and one of the lack of P900/P910 is unavailability of WIFI.
Or will SE release another variant like P970 plus WIFI? Maybe P980? It will good if it is so.
Just a thought...

Posted by max_wedge
sony should make a wifi memory stick device (like the sd wifi card)

sorry, that made little sense... you say not having the flip is an issue if you DONT want an on body qwerty keyboard?

there is a touchscreen keyboard, and virtual flip. I really don't get your point...

Unless your talking about the p990, but i think we're talking about the p970 here mate, so that means no on body keyboard....

This is how the phones could look ... with P990 screen or P910 screen ...

Posted by dazbradbury
Thanks for the above pics, but doubt the p970 would use screen sizes different to the p990. So by the sound of things, the flip-closed and flip open screen sizes should be the same...

Also, about the p970 not having wi-fi, personally, i don't see it as a problem. If it would mean the phone is lighter and thinner. Ideally i suppose a Ms-duo wi-fi card would the solution for everyone to be happy. Wi-fi would be a nice extra though.

The flip hinge takes up hardly any space, and for it's pro's i think it's definately worth having. But obviously, if it was to be a flip-off phone alltogether I wouldn't mind at all, as that's the way i'd probably end up having it....

Very eager to get some real info on this now... Come on SE get it announced!

Funny you should mention that. When Sony had the Palm OS Organizers they did have teh memory stick WiFi module ONLY for Japan users; limited quantities but did away with it very quickly. MS Duo didnt exist then, SD cards were just around the horizon as well.

i just want that damn keyboard to be removable, and the screen bigger and for it to support 3g sims, i could care less about a second camera for video calls.

Posted by BobaFett
when ERICSSON and sony have merged, there was a discussion, what to launch as first se model, t68i or that colour screen sony ( z whatever). as we know now, they choose t68.

Posted by Residentevil
I do not need the keyboard - I just want the damn bigger screen.

Visited the original site which post this picture and article

yup no doubt the same site is one of the first few tht reported mulan but in general I don't trust any china website rumour unless they show the actual product.

Its always B**S**T from China... I will only start believing when more picture of actual product is revealed.

Posted by mario2002
It looks like not many like the P990.I for once would like a - by now standard speed WIFI (not the castrated 11mbit) and certainly EDGE. Compatibility to the 'old' Pxx software would be nice too.On the other hand I can live with the keyboard.

Posted by brix25
Wait till the first P990's hit the shelves all the naysayers and disbelievers will be eating their words. Right now the phone is in beta testing, once launched the fw will hopefully be stable.

Posted by dazbradbury
@brix,

Yeh, because Sony Ericsson always release phones with unbuggy firmware... lol. Let's not lie to ourselves.

I'm sure when the p990 comes out i won't be able to resist and will get one regardless of the bugs still present, but we'll just have to wait and see.

hopefully we'll have more info on the p970 by then...

Good spot, looks like those are based on someone's imagination, with a ltitle info from Eldar...

After those pics, Eldar did say

" visible part of display with flip is shorter...
buttons on external part of flip actually but joystic placed inside"

So, looks like we'll have a P900 type flip, with button on the outside, blank on the inside, And on the actual Casing underneath the flip we'll have a navi-joystick...

He also mentions a 5-way jog-dial - Which would be amazing!

But there is a possibility of it not being touchscreen - That would be RUBBISH!
