Another question from me

A friend of mine lent me a copy of windows vista to install (the beta version that ms let certain people download) which he had burnt to disk.
As I didn’t have time to install it I just copied the contents of the disk to my hard drive. But once I got round to putting vista on my own disk the pc wont boot from it. All I did was burn everything I took off the original disk (via nero).

How do I make a bootable windows vista disk (cd/dvd rom)?

Any ideas?

Posted by Cycovision
I guess you need to somehow covert the data from the vista disk on your hard drive into a .iso or .bin disk image, then burn the image to dvd.

I'm not sure, but alcohol 120% might be capable of this?

Posted by luigithfc
@ cycovision, still no luck , it seems it fais at accuring network address???

any other options??

Posted by Cycovision
Has the laptop got an ethernet port? Can it connect to the router if you use a cable rather than wireless?

Just to check whether it's the router's wireless bit that needs fiddling with, that's all!

Posted by luigithfc
yes it does thats how im using it at the moment, cause of the problem.

also does having a netgear router and a belkin adapter effect this in anyway??

but on the belkin program its shows connection to the router not the internet.

Posted by Cycovision
It shouldn't matter at all, but belkin wireless gear has been known to cause headaches...

I think you might be right. If it's not down to the router's security settings (make sure it's set to broadcast the SSID and turn off WEP etc.) and the router is set to use 802.11 a/b/g then it does look like the belkin card might be the problem.

I use a netgear WG511T wireless card with a netgear DG834G router and it works great so if you end up exchanging the belkin card, I'd highly recommend the WG511T

^^^^^how do i do what you just said??^^

Hehehe!

In internet explorer, type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar and press 'go'

A username and password prompt should appear. by default, the username is 'admin' and the password is 'password'.

You should then end up in the router's control panel. It works like a web page, down the left hand side you should see various options. Click on the 'wireless settings' (or similar) link and you should see the bits that you need to check or change. If they're not on that particular page, have a hunt around in the other settings pages. I can't be more specific because I'm not at home right now.

Come to think of it, if you've never been in the control panel before, you might find the cause of your problem! Sometimes, even though the AOL setup program says that it's enabled the wireless connection, it doesn't do it properly

Posted by J-J
Heres one for you then fella,

Just bought a new pc setup yesterday and was setting everything up.

Turned the pc and monitor and everything was fine but then the monitor suddenly lost signal and no matter what i did it wouldnt come back on.

Turned the pc off and back on and it was working again, kept the mouse moving and was fine, pc fully booted up but as soon as i didnt do anything for a few minutes the screen lost signal again and it wouldnt come back unless i restarted the machine, any ideas?

Sounds like it's going into hibernation mode on a very short time out!

Press 'start', 'control panel' then double click on 'Power Options'. Click on the 'hibernation' tab and turn hibernation off.

While you're there, have a look at the other tabs on the power options too. Make sure that everything is turned to 'Always on'.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then I think you need to take it back to the shop!

cheers for the quick reply fella, also, how easy is it to formatt a hard drive

Posted by Cycovision
Depends what you mean by format! If you just mean wiping it completely clean then all you do is:

1. Connect the hard drive to your PC, either using the internal IDE or SATA and power connectors or using an external USB hard drive caddy.

2. Go into 'My Computer' and find the drive you wish to format (it'll be labled D:, E:, F: or similar).

3. Right-click on it and select 'Format...'

4. Press 'OK'

If you mean wiping the sywstem drive (the drive that has windows installed on it, usually labled C:) and reinstalling windows again then there's a bit more to it. Firstly, you'll need your windows installation disk (the formatting happens prior to installing windows during the setup process) and secondly you'll need to have all of your driver CD's ready so that you can install your hardware immediately after windows has installed.

Hi, got a slight problem at the moment with my PC - it's not updating the internet security programme (CA Internet Security), and keeps popping up an install window when I start up CA, which just keeps flicking up and then dissapearing, as if someone is constantly pressing the cancel button. I've tried running an update, the updater downloads the update and then says there's a failure! These 'installer' windows dissapear when I shut CA down, a reboot doesn't stop this problem either.

It does also say it's looking for a file called 'capf.msi', which a google search brings up no results for. My hard disk at the moment is constantly thrashing, it keeps wanting to access the A:\\ though everything else is running OK.

Please tell me I haven't got a particularly nasty virus or spyware! Am just about to run a scan on both fronts.

Posted by Cycovision
Could be, but it sounds more like the internet security app has become corrupted through a dodgy update file than virus' or spyware.

Uninstall and reinstall it if your scans come up blank?

Posted by Sammy_boy
Just what I was just about to think matey, will do that now!

Cheers, will let you know if it works

Posted by Sammy_boy
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, it's still doing it, bloody thing!

It made a meal of uninstallation, so i suspect it didn't manage it properly.

am about to go to work but will try uninstalling but not reinstalling the net security prog when i get home and see if i still get this stupid installer window trying to pop up.

This prog's been nothing but trouble since i installed it, any recommendations for a free firewall and AV programme? someone recommended a couple to me but i've forgotten them!

Posted by deejayvoodoo
Message for Sammyboy....

The problem that you posted about the CAPF.msi - Can you please tell me how you sorted it out? I have the same problem and have tried to uninstall but it won't complete the process. I also have the CA security suite stuff popping up and trying to install, same is you experienced.
I have temporarily stopped this happening by cancelling them through the windows task manager, but I want to get rid of it for good.

As the CA Internet Security stuff was rubbish I am now running McAfee virus and firewall which is free for 3 months. I downloaded it fom the miscrosoft website and have had no probs with it.

I just want to be able to uninstall the CA stuff properly. Can you help please? I'm not a techie, so you will have to explain everything like an idiots guide...ha ha Thanks!

actually here's a starter for you...

please tell me about name resolutions, wins and dchp. I pretty much understand DNS I think

in particular where i can see current translations and where I can set new translations

I have installed some HP drivers for a network printer and on my vista machine I can ping the device name itself so it clearly has some translation going on somewhere. on an xp machine I can see its trying to access the printer via that name but pinging suggests there is no name resolution for that device name

To be honest, this isn't an area I know a great deal about so rather than regurgitate a load of information that you could easily google for, I'll post a couple of links that I have in my favourites for problems such as this.

Basically, for those who may not know, WINS is (or supposedly was!) just a M$ produced version of the NetBios Name Services system that M$ used in all of their operating systems prior to Windows 2000. It does exactly the same thing, i.e. map device or domain names to IP addresses that have been dynamically assigned by other computers or devices, such as routers or network printers, using a simple database table system that is updated on start-up. Same thing, done slightly differently for licensing purposes!

Which means that it shouldn't have anything to do with Masseur's problem at all, even though the WINS system is still available in M$ OS's for backwards compatibility. So here's the links:

This is a M$ tech report explaining the DNS system in XP, along with command line examples to hack it. Maybe of some help, since it sounds like you may need to set up the name resolution manually within XP?

http://technet.microsoft.com/[....]ca-b44d-90e6-146ace638e24.aspx

And here's an article about routing tables. I've had to play about with these several times in the past to solve various networking problems so again, it might come in useful for you.

thanks. yeah I thought WINS was outdated from the brief bit I had read but I'll follow up on those links tomorrow as HP support is not as good as it used to be, i.e. its now offshore and very script driven

as background, I recently got the L7780 to replace our HP d155xi at home, but like most HP stuff the hardware is great but their software leaves alot to be desired. Thing is that once its working then its fantastic! duplex printing, copying, scanning, fax, wifi, lan etc etc

Hi cyco,

my laptop doesn't detect my network cable when its plugged in. The little green light near the port comes on though and the cable is fine. The device manager shows no issues either. Any ideas? .

Posted by Cycovision
Is the network connection disabled? Go to Control Panel - Network Connections and make sure that 'Local Area Connection' does not have a red cross on it's icon. If it has, right-click on it and select 'Enable'.

Is your firewall app blocking it? Check every setting that you can find just to make sure!

If it's not any of those, have you tried running the Network Setup Wizard again?

What are you trying to connect to, a router or directly to another computer?

Posted by goldenface
I'm connecting to a router. I was told a pop up would appear when the cable plugs in but nothing. I'll check those settings, thanks.

Posted by Cycovision
Oh right! Might be that the router isn't configured correctly? Are you plumbing in a new internet service provider and running their software to sort everything out?

Posted by gtreds
Check da cable colour codings.
Or try changing da connection speed(lower)

Yes, thats right. The Broadband is ready to be used as I can detect it and its signal strength etc via a Netgear router.

But when I try and enter the network key to connect I get a message telling me with will only allow either 5 or 13 ASCII characters and my network key is 8 block capitals.

So I turn the wep off then connect but nothing. The connection is supposed to appear automatically in network settings but it doesn't.

It looks like a problem with the Network Adaptor as although this seems to be working ok in the device manager it si supposed to react when I plug the network cable in but it doesn't.

Should I try reinstalling the network card? Is this a bug with XP in particular? I am on SP1, will acquiring SP2 make any difference?

I'm stumped.

Posted by Cycovision
Very strange! It shouldn't have anything to do with SP1 but it might be worth a look on google just to make sure, I'll have a look in a little while.

Can you ping the router from the command line? Click 'Start', 'Run', type in 'cmd' and then Click 'Ok'.

Then, type in 'ipconfig' and press 'Enter'. If nothing happens, try 'ipconfig /renew'.

If it lists a 'Default Gateway', type in 'ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (where xxx.xxx is the default gateway IP address). This will show if the computer can actually talk to the router.

A nice little tool that might solve this problem is 'Winsock Fix' available here

Posted by goldenface
Brilliant. I'll give that a go tonight.

Thanks.

I've got a problem!!!

My PC has randomly started crashing?!? It just locks up! I can't reboot in anyway i have to turn it off at the plug. At first it seemed totally random but now certain sites make it happen!? if i try to access products on vajacase.com it'll lock up, and the same if i try and access the Drayton-Manor website? I havent changed anything lately in my setup or installed much new? I tried doing a system recovery thing to 3months ago but it has made no difference? Any deas Cyco? It's getting really annoying.... I was thinking maybe i need a flash update or java but they both seem to be up to date? Could it be a virus?

Sounds more like the CPU is overheating to me. Take the side off and give everything a bloody good clean, particularly the heatsink and fan on the CPU. I use a hoover to get the dust out!

If that doesn't do it, you might need to take the heatsink and fan off and apply some thermal grease to the surface of the CPU. You can get thermal grease easily on-line

The reason it happens with certain websites is because if a site has lots of flash animation, the CPU has to work harder meaning it gets hotter more quickly. The harder a CPU works, the hotter it runs.

Hi Cyco,

Still no joy.

However, can you tell me this:

When I go into the device manager and open the com ports, the only one I can see is the LPT1 Printer port.

Should I not have a list of many more communiction ports? I seem to remember there being more than just the printer port available.

Posted by Cycovision
No, not nowadays. Not unless your PC has a physical COM port (the old 9-pin RS 232 type) or certain applications have set up virtual COM ports like SE's m-router for PC Suite app does.

I guess now you need to figure out whether it's a hardware or software problem. The easiest way on a laptop would be to try a USB to NIC converter like this one

You can get them cheaper on E-Bay. If it works, then your network port is most likely buggered. If it doesn't, then it's either windows or the router.

Posted by goldenface
Thanks matey! Is replacing the network port a difficult task?

I have a Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet card and a Wireless Lan Card. Do I need both of these to connect my laptop wirelessly to a router?

@Cyco

I bought and adapter and it still didn't work. I plugged both ends of the network cable into the router and ports 1 & 2 lit up so the cable seems fine. So it looks like its windows.

Thanks mate.

I have a wireless modem/router downstairs which I use via wifi upstairs on another pc, although this is fine for just web browsing not so great for online game play.

Just wondering if it’s possible to use another wired modem upstairs, on another phone socket.

Well in short is it ok to have two modems on one phone line?

@Cyco

Ok bought a different video input card today, having trouble with the drivers now - the fact tht it didn't come with any!

I'm not 100% sure what make it is, but I believe that it's a Sony. Anyway,
here are some numbers found on the card....

Cheers Cyco! Your the Sh!t

It seems you got it spot on! I took my cpu and heat sink out and gave them a good clean and it helped for a couple of days but the problem came back. I figured the PSU was obstructing the air flow to the CPU so i've now externally mounted my PSU and the problem seems long gone! Nice one duder. You should start charging for the service!

Posted by Cycovision
Sorry guys and gals, been a bit busy the last couple of days!

@Joebmc

As far as I know you can't run two modems off the same phone line, something to do with the way ADSL works

@Danny

www.driverguide.com is a good place to look for drivers. You can use the information from the stickers as your search terms if the obvious stuff doesn't bring up any results. If you get stuck, I'll have a look for you when I get a minute

@jmash

Re-starting is often a symptom of a dodgy memory module. If you can't get hold of a few sticks of memory to try swapping them out, you might need to take it to a PC repair shop.

@Burgaz

No worries mate. So my cheque is in the post i presume?

Posted by Danny_BFC
had no luck with the drivers cyco - i tried two ---with no luck nad now i cant get anymore without paying

Posted by Danny_BFC
I can actually download now

Still cant find it tho
