@cycovision,i tried to repair xp but met with a prob there aswell.
I selected the xp setup frm boot menu, but got an error message,"missing or corrupt hal.dll, pls replace the file"
Now ive d/led another hal.dll frm net.should i replace it with the original one?
Posted by Cycovision
Yes, it's safe to replace hal.dll but I'm not altogether sure it'll work. Usually, this indicates that you need a full reinstall of windows

I've had a problem with XP recently. A conflict with a Windows Messenger Download caused it to crash on startup. I got it running again by choosing a selective startup and enabling Services individually.
But now I find a problem with Outlook Express 6. I can recieve emails ok but the content of the email doesn't display. Any ideas?
TIA
Posted by deepsme
hasn't worked unfortunately. i replaced it and still got the same message.
guess it's time to take the long route
Posted by lamont
does anybody here read and understand HJT (HiJackThis) logs? thanks
Posted by Cycovision
@carkitter
you could try uninstalling and reinstalling outlook express. You'll need your windows xp disk.
Go to control panel - add/remove programs and click on 'add/remove windows components'. Un-tick the entry for 'outlook express' and click ok. Then, restart the computer and rpepeat the process only this time, tick the box next to outlook express.
If that doesn't work, you could try a repair reinstall. I've described how to do this previously in this thread, I think it's one or two pages back from here.
@Lamont
Yeah, post it here mate and we'll have a look

a quick Q from me
I've got a spare official battery for my Vaio (BPS2 I think) and its been giving me upwards of 2 1/2 hours but sudeenly last weekend it won't take a charge. In fact the vaio system tray power utility just says its on A/C power which is the same as it says when there is no battery inserted.
Is there a way to revive this battery because I surprised it should suddenly go and the other battery works fine in the vaio

cheers everyone for the help with this. the problem is basically iv come back off holiday and the computer in general is running quite slow and freezes for a second or two quite often. Can you see any problems.
Also i doubled my ram from 512mb to 1024mb a while back and wondered whether i have to do anything apart from putting it in the ram slot, the computer detects it but i didnt notice in change really in how the computer was running.
thanks again

@masseur
The only trick I've had any success with is to place a 100ohm resistor accross the battery terminals to completely discharge the battery and then directly wire up an ordinary 12v battery charger to try and force current into the battery. Having said that, the battery died again soon afterwards and it's a bit of a dangerous procedure so I wouldn't really recommend it!
@Lamont
I can't see anything particularly unusual in that HJT log. Is the new stick of memory the same make and speed as your original stick? For example, if the new stick is PC2700 and the original one is PC3200, the whole system will clock down to the slower PC2700 memory bus rate. Also, very occasionally if you use sticks from different manufacturers it can have an adverse effect even though it shouldn't. Have you tried taking the new stick out to see if it makes any difference?
Posted by lamont
il check the makes and speeds now. im sure the speeds are the same but will double check. il then take the mem out and see if i can notice a change. thanks for the advice.
Posted by lamont
all the memory is pc133, does that sound ok or is that slow speed memory anyway? not check manufacturer yet though. thanks
Posted by Cycovision
That's fine. It is slow memory by todays standards but it doesn't explain why it's suddenly started going slower than before. You don't normally notice a massive difference in going from 512mb to 1Gb because 512 is plenty for running XP and doing basic stuff. You notice better performance when you use heavy apps like video editing stuff and games.
I'd still take each of the sticks out one at a time to see if makes a difference. After that I'd be testing the hard drive since that can cause stuttering and slowing down.
You can also try disconnecting the CD and floppy drives because again, they can cause strange things to happen when they start failing.

orite kewl, thanks very much for the advise, il check it out. thanks again

I have a few questions.
- Can any computer boot from a USB device or do I have to check the bios to see if booting from a USB device is supported.
- Does the USB port be on the motherboard? As opposed to a PCI USB card. All my motherboard's ports are USB 1.1.
- Booting from any USB device is the same? Meeing the PC won't mind if its a thumb drive or a USB HDD?
Posted by Cycovision
1. No, not all computers can boot from USB. As you said, you need to check BIOS to make sure that external devices show up as an option in the Boot order menu.
2. Yes, you should be able to boot from a device attached to a PCI USB card since a compatible BIOS generally treats them as a standard USB bridge (it treats them the same as the ports that are already on the motherboard).
3. Technically yes, but generally no! It depends on the specific hardware as to whether or not Windows setup will see a USB pen drive or Card reader and allow you to install to it but the point is that you really shouldn't install an operating system on a flash memory device. There's two main reasons for this. One is that these devices are much, much slower than hard drives and the other is that they have a much lower lifespan in terms of read / write operations than a hard drive which makes them totally unsuitable for using as a system drive.
Bear in mind that even if you use a USB 2.0 or firewire external hard drive to install the OS on, it will still be considerably slower than using an internal IDE or sata drive. I really don't recommend it even though it is technically possible on many newer computers.

Thanks man.
I was asking because I wanted to give Linux a spin and didn't want to go through the hassle of partitioning my quite full HDD.
Posted by Cycovision
Ah right! Have you tried any of the distributions that run from a CD yet? If you haven't, they're not brilliant but they'll give you an idea of what Linux is like to use
Posted by blu_6779
@mustafa have you tried parallels? I'm using it right now with Suse on XP. No more partitioning for me

@Cycovision,
Hye mate, i was wondering if you'd lend me a lil advise (and anyone else pos) - basically i'm looking to build a new base unit as mines getting a lil bit old now and sometimes strugles..
Im looking at a dualcore AMD system (or pos a single core 64bit or soemthing).. can you recommend and any good motherboards and chips? Theres so many different ones now taht im a bit worried i'll hit compatibility issues if i do it all myelf... looking to install either 1 gig or 2 gig of ram.... Not sure whether to go for SLI or standard pci express or even to keep my existing G6600GT for a while longer (which is agp x8 - incase i need a board that backwardss compat with agp
as you can prob tell im a tad lost with this lol... i always build my own and have built a fair few - its just all changed a lil bit since my last build lol...
also id like to have soem sort of raid setup with HDD's.. can i use raid and normal setup ie - have 4 Hdd's attached?
oh one last thing - i usually use www.ebuyer.co.uk for buying parts if that helps
Cheers matey
lee
Posted by Cycovision
No probs, but before we start blurting out model numbers what's the most that are you looking to spend on this build? It makes it much easier if I have an idea, say a maximum of £700, £1000, £1500 etc. otherwise we'll end up filling pages and pages with different mobos and chips!
Posted by leeboy13
good point... im hoping to keep it under £500... the cheaper teh better -hence why im thinking maybe i could hang on to my current Gefore 6600GT as it aint that mauch a bad card for now and it'll save me a shed load lol..... but id like to have teh option to maybe upgrade the graphics card soon to either a SLI setup (if ya think its worth it) or a pci express setup....
So i need the mo board to be compatible with agp 8.... (there aint many but there is one to two on teh ebuyer site i linked to)
cheers again cyco for finding time to help me out - much appreciated
Posted by leeboy13
should of mentioned before.....
basically im looking at buying
motherbaord,
processor,
ram,
hard drives,
maybe dvd-r and dvd....
im hoping under £500 should be ok for this - it hasnt gotta be jaw dropping by any means..
no monitor (as my 19inch tft widescreen arrived on saturday (thank you lamont for finding that baby at £105)
just better tahn my current setup which is -
2200XP, 512 ram, 200gig hdd, geforce 6600GT.
and a new case (but tahts not at all important for this now)
Posted by leeboy13
in sayiogn what i said about a graphics card - how does this one look?
http://www.ebuyer.com/custome[....]3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=101827
much of an improvment from a gefore 6600GT?
Posted by Cycovision
I don't think you can get motherboards with both AGP and PCI-E, so I think you'll be looking at getting a new card. Ebuyer do radeon x1600 cards for about £100, they're a good mid-range card and they perform quite well. I'd suggest you spend about £100 on the graphics cards becuse you'll probably be disappointed with anything less.
For the motherboard, it really ought to be a socket 939 if you're going for AMD. This Asus board looks reasonable for the money, has RAID built in and it supports crossfire (ATI's version of SLI): http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/101177
Processor: AMD X2 3800+ (dual core) http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/101177
Which leaves you about £200 for the memory and hard drives. Kingston do matched pair 1Gb DDR dual core sets for about £75. 1 Gig is generally fine for running just about anything under XP, you can of course add more later if you decide to upgrade to Vista. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/49296
And with whatever you have left, just get a pair of the biggest SATA hard drives you can afford! I tend to use Maxtor or seagate drives, just steer clear of any that seem too cheap to be true! Like the memory, you can add more drives later if you need to but two will get you started with raid. Just remember that they have to be identical, same manufacturer and exactly the same capacity and model number.
So if I've got my sums right, you should have a pretty decent system there for about £500
Posted by leeboy13
you are a true star matey....
is it easy to setup the raid hdd's? im guessing that is where windows will be installed? if so, is it simple to setup?
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, it's not too bad to set up. The motherboard will either have a built-in utility (rather like your BIOS setup screen) that you use to set up the raid array or it will come with a bootable CD (usually the same one as the driver CD) that contains the setup program.
Just make sure that you read the instructions for setting up raid carefully since the exact procedure does vary between different motherboard manufacturers. For example, some of them require you to make a driver floppy disk for windows setup to use via the raid utility whilst others don't.
Posted by leeboy13
tis will sound silly, but how do i both, setup windows on the raid setup hdd's and setup teh raid stuff? or do i instal windows on a IDE hdd?
thanks
Posted by Cycovision
Not silly at all! RAID is controlled by the motherboard itself, not windows. You build up the PC as you would normally, up to the point where you're about to put the windows CD in. But instead of doing that, you switch the PC on and immediately start up the raid configuration utility. As I said before, this is done either by pressing a key on the keyboard (like getting into BIOS) or by booting up the supplied CD.
The utility is basically a wizard that does that following:
1. Detects your hard drives
2. Asks you what kind of RAID array you want to use (typically raid 0 or raid 1)
3. Sets up the raid array, saves the information and prompts you to reboot.
After that, the computer effectively thinks that it has only one hard drive! So you just go ahead and install windows as you normally would.
As long as you read the instructions to make sure that you don't forget something (like creating the driver floppy disk if required), you'll be fine!

sounds like a piece of cake matey - i understand now....
cheers for all teh help matey.... one lil prob, the cpou you recommended ahs been discountinued

I am about to do a complete reformat and reinstall of my dell laptop. What I would like to know is if it is possible to burn all the windows updates and sp2 etc onto a cd so that i can install them from the start as the CD that came with the laptop is only XP sp1 and I have to spend hours doing the online updates when i install using this cd. (Hope that made sense!) Is it possible to do this?
Any help is much appreciated!

Erm.....Cyco, sorry to jump in, would really appreciate the help.....
......been looking at a tablet PC, specs are v.good, price amazing.......
......hence I think it's a bit suss..........is there a way to check if it's not kosha??
Hope you can help
Posted by Cycovision
Depends what parts of the deal you are concerned about. Is it that you think it's an outright scam, i.e you send the money and recieve nothing at all or do you suspect that the tablet PC is being falsley advertised, i.e. you'll recieve an battered old obsolete model rather than the one you saw?
Or do you think it might be stolen? If so, it could in theory be traced from the serial number or maybe even MAC address if the owner registered it with the manufacturer. But generally it's difficult to know for sure if a tablet PC is stolen unless it has been deliberatley marked in some way, with an etching or UV pen for example.
Have you got a link so we can have a look at it?

Thanks chap....
No link, here's a couple of pics(from yesterday):
The machine is unused, thinks it's robbed from somewhere....
Thanks for confirming serial/MAC problems, I thought of these.....
Gutted, I could have it for a nice price.............just my luck
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, but the new customer registers the PC, so it won't be tracable that way yet.
However, if a boxfull of them fell off the back of a lorry, the distributors might know the serial numbers of all of them.
It's a tricky decision to make. If it is knocked-off, your chances of getting caught are very slim, but the penalty you pay if you do can be very harsh.

Will contemplate this..............many thanks for the consideration, chap!

Do all PSU’s work with both AMD & Pentium mobo’s?
And can anyone recommend cheap place to get them other than gaybay. They don’t have to be very powerful psu’s (300-400w) btw.
Posted by Cycovision
Most modern PSUs have the necessary connectors for both AMD and Intel boards. It's the second hand or REALLY cheap ones that you need to be carefull with.
How about this one on ebuyer? http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/61308
500w, has all of the connectors, £14 plus delivery. Ebuyer has cheaper ones too but to be honest, you shouldn't skimp on the power supply. It's obviously a critical component. PC Enthusiasts pay £100+ for power supplies so £15 - £50 is resonable for us mere mortals
Posted by joebmc
Cool, thanx
Basically I’m building a bottom range pc it only needs ms office and access to the web. Nothing to power demanding, so no need for a high powered psu (me thinks).
And I haven’t decided on whether an AMD of P4, I have an old emachines which has gone tits up and have a suspicion it’s the psu so want to test that system too, to see if i can salvage anything from it (mobo, cpu...etc).

Might be worth searching ebuyer for a case+PSU deal. Colors IT are reasonable in terms of quality. Not the best by a long shot, but generally reliable.
Posted by whizkidd
@joebmc, you'd do well with an Amd sempron/ 64 (socket 754 or 939) or a Pentium 4 based system..

Some parts of me are artificially enhanced, I'll leave it to your imagination to guess which parts though
Posted by mustafabay
Trying to keep my thought off imaginning which parts of Cyco's body are artificially enhanced, I'd like to ask a question.
I just bought a HDD and intend on installing Linux on part of it. Does/Can Linux use FAT32. If so I'll partition the HDD while installing Linux, if not I'll have to partition it first, right?
I'll be installing PCLinuxOS, I've read the review on Etremetech and I feel I'm making a good decision.
Well if any one will answer this question, would XP detect my new unformatted HDD? And then I'd just tell it to format it. Maybe I should just try myself and see.

Well XP does detect the HDD but its not seen in my computer and I can't see how to format it. Its a 160 GB drive but device manager seems to think its 131 069 MB, now that's 130GB. I have SP2 so isn't the size limitation fixed? My main point is, will Linux format the drive as FAT32.
